I'm a tailor/mage, and I was in the mummie crypt getting innards for thread. Would attack them with sword and then cast on them, make thread from the guts and make clothes.
All was going well, until I accidently cast on myself. * Stop Powergaminng! * death. Dang it.
I can understand why this happens to prevent powergaming, but I think a little leeway should be taken place for the occasional mis cast. How about allowing one cast on one self every 2, 3 or 4 hours? A cast on oneself every 4 hours is by no means going to allow powergaming, but should allow for the all too infrequent, but instantly deadly, miscasts.
A fireball exploding in ones face already isn't a fun experience, takes a while for my eye brows to grow back, but to add insult to injury by instant death is a bit much.

This suggestion was once brought up before and I think the reason for rejection was somewhere along the lines of quote "It is a risk that one takes when they decide to handle something as dangerous as casting spells." Although it can be dangerous for mages, I do like this aspect of spellcasting which requires a bit of manual skill and care not to hit the wrong target, making spellcasting effectiveness more than just about brute skill raising of the runes. It also gives a small motivation for mages to use a wand.

Well, the the interface for casting spells should be a little more effective, and the program should not lag my computer like it does.
When I'm casting spells and clicking and my computer hicups in a CPU lag, so I accidently target myself instead of the skeleton next to me, who's fault is that? Oh, yes, right, it is mine for not being able to afford a 2.0GHz Pentium 4 computer, but my poor old Celeron 400.

After reading about wands here, and buying a wand to see how it works, I take back what I said. There is nothign wrong with insta-death when casting on one self. Kinda helps pure casters stay in form having to use a wand.
I just didn't know about wands before.
Perhaps, though, just change the message that appears? Instead of, "Stop Powergaming!" make it something more IC, "Your magic turns in on itself!" or "The mana resonates within your mind and explodes!" or such.
