Engraving...

I thought about it many times before posting, because sometimes this thing came useless in games.
Which crafter never dreamed on putting his name on a weapon or a message to the user of the item. I thought maybe we could inplant that in the game (even a different skill in ingravings). So you could write something on an item. It could be your name or a message (lets say you make a gift to someone so you write "To my good friend or something")...
But we could make it even better. People (mages) with high skill in ingraving could write some runes on the item...like enchanting it. So the item would have a specific magic attribute. Lets say you put the rune of fire in a staff, so when you hit an ennemy, it inflames it for a second or two. Maybe some more simple if you want, but it would make a change I think!

I believe enchanting has long been underway, but I greatly enjoy the idea of engraving, which means it will probably never get put into play.
So many good ideas have been turned down because it can "just as easily be roleplayed." This is one of those ideas, unfortunately.

I think it would be hard to manage them. If you build 10 normals swords the will be layed on the same square in the inventory. If you grave them, you have make a new Square for every Item. And if you grave an Item, it must be created totally new on the server. THe item and the message on it must the saved on the server so everyone can read it if he gets it. I think that would be too difficult.

It's not said "it can be role played" just so we can be jerks...it's the truth. This stuff is easily role played, and it would be a major technical undertaking that yields minor results in my honest opinion.
Not to mention, I just
know some smartassing dwarf will put as an engraving on somebody's sword "He who carries this blade is dubbed the biggest douche in Illarion."

Perhaps it can be related to !prefix and !suffix, except on items. That would be cool, I like this idea. And yes, since many like it, it probably won't happen

From what I understand, from other discussions of the items system, it is entirely impractical. It seems that the system requires every sword to be identical, essentially there is only one sword and everyone carries a copy of it. This is why it is not possible to have a sword that is extra sharp, or nearly broken or whatever without it being a brand new type of item (like the 'rusty sword' is). Having engravings on your sword would then require it to be a brand new type of item (a 'sword with "Death come swiftly to the foes of the elves" written on the blade', for example). And you'd need a new item type for every single engraved item in the world. Because item types take up non-trivial amounts of resources (I think, I am extrapolating from what I have read rather than having access to the system) adding hundreds of new ones would be require more system resources than is practical and lead to a huge slowdown in the speed the game runs at.
And it is easy enough to roleplay. My character has had several 'unique' items, for example the horned helmet someone gave him when he first arrived to give him a chance against the mummies. The system didn't know it was different from the other horned helmets in the world but my character did, and, when he helped someone new get by, it was the same helmet that he passed on to them. Had it been engraved the engraving would have moved with the helmet because it would have been RPed.

#me looks into the furtur...
Yes! I love this idea! That way i can put in a "HELP! My sword has been tooken!" on my sword so when, in the future, i kill a dwarf for thinking im ugly, and get my ass mugged agian, he can display it!
