roleplaying stats,,,have i messed up ?

Hello all,
I was not sure weather to stick this post in newbie or in general I picked general as the guide to roleplaying can be found in this forum.
I am brand new to Illarion and am currently waiting for my account to be activated, although I have been informed I have been accepted.
When one begins to create a character there are many stats to distribute points around some of which are not currently used,
So of course I did not put any points on willpower, decideing that it was propably of case of how some one roleplayed and how gullable there character was that would dictate how easly influenced they are.
Then as my character has no magick ability nor any desire to learn magic I put around 3 essence and about 9 for intellegence.
My problem comes in now having read the guide to roleplaying and seeing things like essence dictateing a characters presence and personality.
I am use to stats being used for spot checks and dice rolls, and dictateing things like what books a character can read and such like.
So my question is when my account is activated should I request to create a new character. As this one is possibly going against the grain of the game a little. Being a bard/ranger with such low essence and marginal intellegence.
Do a lot of players take the intial stas very seriously and will I be "cheating" the system playing a smart and charasmatic character with a low intellengence and essence.
As I say Pendar has no aspirations towards magick or literature but I still dont like the idea I may be some how cheating.
Thanks for your time and input.

P.s If this is better suited to the newbie forum feel free to move it.
