some ideas for better balance - please read

That everyone have to start as an miner is sad.
you should give every race an own tool for start (and perhaps a bonus on this skill too)
it would help to bring a better job balance (in the moment you find 100 smith but not one lumberjacker)
and it would make the races more realistic
as exempale

Humans = should start as Lumberjacker
Orks = The most Orks are Hunter, so they should get an little armor and a sword
Hobbits = The most hobbits have there own garden or a little farm, and they like to eat :)
                so they should be farmer (start with flail,scyth, an a bit weed and cabbages)
Lizzards = Live in Water and like fish, they should become a fishing rod (and perhaps a
                bonus on there fishing skill)
Dwarfs = like to work under the earth, so they should still work as miners
Elves = hm i dont know, perhaps herblore but perhaps somebody have a better idea

change the sell prices
in the moment you get 18 gold for a lute in the shop. Thats to many! lower the price (ca.10  gold) or they should be harder to make.

the yellow fish are harder to catch than the grey so they should bring more money (2 gold)

the price for books are fine now but perhaps some runes should be more expensive than other. Runes like qwan, sij they are used for very powerfull spells so they should be more expensive.

when a mage cast a spell he ever whisper some magic words and make some movements with his fingers.
so they should have one free hand or a magic wand in the hand to cast spells.
so mages cant use 2 Shields (i never heard a story over a mage with shields).

the ogger(trolls) and the demons should be walk slower.
they are very big and heavy. and that make the work of archer more easy

a few monster should use magic

demon skellets should use a fire spell
beholder should use sometimes! Paralyse

a few spell ideas:

leach life (lev mes) = take the heal of your enemy to heal yourself (ca 1/5 of life)
haste = you could walk faster a short time (2 or 3 seconds) to escape an enemy (need a lot of mana so people use it only when they realy in trouble)
silent = the target should be silent for a few seconds (target cant talk and cast)

spell level
some spells should be only able if your chars intelligence is high enaugh (would be different mages and fighters better)

i know not all are real new and that they are much work for the programmers but they would helped to bring a better balance in the game

Back to the old discussion about the two shield thing, contrary to popular opinion, I actually like it the way it is now. If every mage had to wear a staff or wand with a poor defense ability, they would all fall much too easily to weapons which kill people in a few hits, while magic would take about half a dozen spells to kill things. Even the greatest of mages would be defenseless against a simple archer. There would be no advantage to using magic anymore since weapons take more damage per hit, have a quicker attack rate, and doesn't cost mana. I think the handicap of not being able to lock on to your target with magic is enough of a set back for a mage with two shields. An experienced person should be able to escape death from a shielded mage if he is quick and clever enough.

The problem is that you can't kill them with mere weapons, but I think that does make a certain amount of sense. A mage being a person with supernatural powers to create ice and lightning, you'd think he could at least use these supernatural powers to make a barrier to protect himself from mere weapons.

With the current fighting system, forcing a mage to be defensively poor in battle would only cause even more imbalance from what I see.

So basically what you are saying, Dyluck, is that its "ok" that a mage can kill a melee figther while the melee figther even haves no change to scratch him?

in the moment an Archer (or sniper ) with wind arrows can kill everybody easily :(
the problem is, a mage with 2 shield is realy hard to hit. (by the way i dont think a shield would help him when a warrior attack with a heavy warhamer). A mage have very strong powers over lightning, fire ec. but why should be every mage so strong that a weapon never hit him? this would be not right.

perhaps would two spell help

1. a real strong attack spell (2 or 2,5 times so strong like the icebold)
2. a defence spell that is so good like a "1/2 Shield"

this both spells should be hard to become
perhaps the beholders and rod worms should left them with a chance of 1 to 20
so only very good mage witch proof there power would get them.

Taking into consideration the current fighting system and the damage power of weapons, yes Caranthir. If not, then even the most lousy archers can beat even the best mages.

there is a simple way to kill a mage if he is double shielded and you are a melee fighter, run circles around him, eventually he has to reload his mana, and do in an out swipes on him or do tight "jumping" around him like this diagram:

Jump on the "J"s and he will click on himself, killing himself.

Hey see I like things like that, when you win battles through wits, not plain competition of seeing who has a higher skill value.

Dyluck is right, use wits that way it is hard to beat you! YOU not him!
