Monster Modifications

I couldn't find any threads that fit the essence of this topic, so here goes:

Swap the graphics of the flies with a more menacing creature, i.e. an alligator, a mutant frog, a "swamp thing", rat-people; just something, anything that appears to be more menacing than flies. Not even change their attributes, etc. Just different graphics.

I find it absolutely ridiculous how certain people who decided to play fighter characters are dogged by the game and get their ass kicked by a swarm of flies, when their character is new to the game. They can also create absolutely ridiculous situations in role-play.
  • A: What are you?
B: I am a warrior from the lost kingdom!
A: So why were you running from flies?
B: I, ehrm, didn't eat my vegetables lately.
Furthermore, I'm not sure if the flies really make people aware that they are standing in a swamp. Something like the alligator or frog might work wonders.

Maybe if they tweaked the flies so that they where weaker? or maybe renamed them mosqitos? just some suggestions :)

Ranger: Excuse me, but you don't play yet. Please refrain from posting on the proposal board, as you have no idea what it is like actually being in game.

Donal be nice, he only makes suggestions, we were all as eager once.

Good idea, but I think most would agree that flies and an alligator would have different attributes

But strange mutant frog things would be a good replacement.

Who has said that this is a swarm of flies? Have you ever been hurt by flies? How would it be with a swarm of killer bees? Aren't they dangerous? What can you really do against such a swarm if you are really attacked by them? Nobody has officially said that this insects aren't dangerous. In my opinion for the type of enemy they are, they are to easy. But we haven't real newbie monsters yet, because the fighting system isn't as balanced as it should be. If its OK for all i can make the insects a bit more easy to kill.

Yes, well they're not exactly menacing anyway. They don't buzz at people at great speed. They just flap their butterfly wings leisurely towards their unsuspecting victims. I agree with changing the graphic to a frog...or at the very least, adding something more to the swamp, perhaps a menacing green blob like monster.

These aren't just any flies.

They are flies left over from the wars in the world,

Please read moonsilver.

I saw nothing in the small paragraph about flies that states they are left over from wars.

No its just..you don't even know what danger these things means for a char ,who isn't balanced, just take a maxed strength char..he will die easily because he needs more protection..but got no two swarms are enough to kill him ,i just believe that because i got no char that is that kind unbalanced ,but when i see people figthing in plate mummy and then they run away from two and i just stand there and can figth two and lose some health..and just in leather..it seems they got unbalanced chars.
But its better to wait untill you got inside and then you can talk about it ..i'm sure he don't want insult you or so ,but talking about things from which you know nothing ..only the name isn't the best idea you can have.
Ohh and know something to the proposal i think a alligator would be nice or just use that bee picture in the swamp ..and i just remember that bror never wanted rats..so better stay away from that.
Hmm mutanted frogs..uhh..wheres the mini alligator?

Well, Rackere fights mummies in some trousers and a simple shirt. It's just a questionn of training (and the right weapon to kill the enemy fast).

I think sword protection is a factor to apply as well. Skill with parry.

The day my new char got here, he killed a mummy with a dagger wearing nothing but his pants ... the thing with flies is that they only do a little damage, yet it's the rate at which they attack that seems to be the main 'problem' They attack so fast that it drains you quicker than a mummy can kill you, and not even a good shovel can whack 'em off you.

I remember it being easier to kill a mummy, than it was a pig!

Compare the flies to the character, these bugs are like the size of your hand or bigger. Their stinger would be like dagger sized. :? I think they need to be able to fly over water, or be changed. I don't think something living in a swamp would be afraid of water. A toad with fangs! YES!

My point is, a newbie sees flies, and doesn't turn.
Then they find out the hard way that flies are more powerful than mummies, as they don't know/understand the game yet. (and I too must say—when I was new, I had assumed the flies would be the weakest foes in the game).
Then running into town... from what they consider flies. Fact is, alot of people don't read Moonsilver for some strange reason until they are told explicitly they are missing vital information.

So everything aside—I agree with the big wasps being more menacing in appearance than a swarm of flies. And a vicious toad with fangs? I'm all for it. :D

Edit: No offense to the design team. It's commendable you had swarms of large flies instead of something like rats. But I personally never agreed to computerized RPGs where swarms of small/dimunitive enemies like rats, mosquitoes, or flies, made up an enemy type. Games like Diablo II had swarms of mosquitoes in them too, or rats as Newbie enemies in Baldur's Gate—I always found it kinda lame. Like they were running out of ideas for creative monster types. I'm sorry, but these "mini-monsters"—you could just stomp them or swat them to death, no matter what you're using, no matter who you are (unless you're a cross-eyed idiot who can't even lift his own arms). It's just commen sense to me.
