I have been on this isle for two days, let me share my happenings.
Day 1 : Ambushed by bandits in the north for gold which i dont have.
Day 2 : Threatened to be put in jail for lumbering trees, bare in mind i had cut but 25!
Is this the usual happenings on this isle, or have i just met bad company.

You have just been unlucky. Before venturing out it's a good idea to talk to folk around town. Find out if it's safe / wise to go where you want to go and do what you want to do. The Town is reasonably safe, or at least as safe as an open town with so many different races and classes can be. The island on the other hand has many dangers, some of which will not listen to reason. Be glad that you escaped with enough body parts to have learnt your lesson.
Stay a while longer and you'll see it's a nice place really.
Sam.

Dear Sir,
I doubt that those you talk about in the North are or were bandits. The Northern lands of Varshikar are sovereign territory belonging to a council of allies.
The cost of trespass is a single ingot of solid gold, or the equivalent (250 gold coins). These funds go to the repair of a land that was once desolate and destroyed, but is slowly being filled with life.
It is not that we enjoy hassling for money or even that we do so for profit, although, considering the sovereign status of our city-state, that would be just as fair. The threat of fines keep dangerous trespassers out of our home and meanwhile help us build a new glory in the North when someone is so foolish to break our laws.
I hope that you understand.
Your Servant,
Moskher Heszche of Varshikar
P.S. Although I am no longer a citizen of Trollsbane, it is important to keep in mind that there are laws protecting certain forests. The reason for which is that certain trees are holy and others are the habitat of trolls.
These laws are for your safety! Trolls can be dangerous when their habitat is threatened. On top of this, chopping the blessed trees of the shrine may result in a curse by the gods! Keep these things in mind.

I think the man refers not to Varshikar, but to the other North. The Northern forest west of the mummies cursed habitat.
It is known that bandits, rogues, and thieves populate that area. It is dangerous to go to, unless you are looking for adventure, loot, or trouble.
If the man is referring to Varshikar - he should send a dove to the leaders of Varshikar and ask for a right to pass. It usually takes very fast.

Ah, Farel, I see you have found your way to the town walls. My offer of assistance still stands, should you wish to grasp it. Merely send me a dove.
