In light of recent events.... SWIMMING!

I'm not sure why this idea hasn't been proposed yet, but anyway, here's my idea:

I propose that the water tiles should be "walkable" (for lack of better, real word). By making the tile slow you down (like the forests do), and implementing the encumbrance system so that it would be nearly impossible to swim with a lot of items, I think it would be very possible to give the effect of swimming. Also, wouldn't it be possible to make the some of the water tiles around the map so that they mask the lower portion of the characters (like how objects do)? I'm pretty sure its feasible.

The reason I suggest this is to offer a technical solution to the problems and provide a way of swimming to the players, so there would be more places to explore. So don't say "well it can be roleplayed, so it doesn't need to be done," because I could just as easily say, "well, we don't NEED graphics, since we can just roleplay what our characters look like."

Constructive criticism only please.

good idea-it can become a skill later
for now-you cannot "swim" if you are holding lots of stuff (like armor)

as for graphix, you could just take the current people, and use only the heads right on the water :D

Also maybe if you swim for long periods you loose health? as to prevent REALLY long travel.s

Maybe there should be an endurance bar that has to deplete first before loosing health.

Would we not need different types of water tyles then? Such as deep and shallow water. Shallow you could wade in and it wouldn't take endurance, while deep you'd have to swim and be wearing next to nothing, also using up your endurance.

Swimming should be like 50% slower than walking, with the exception of Lizardmen. Halflings would have a -5% to -20% (randomised) penalty, as not being as .. what's the word? Sort of like aerodynamic except for swimming, they're just not the right shape to be fast swimmers.

Although I don't think it can be implemented until we get a new client, I don't think lizards and halfling should get a bonus and penalty. I know lizards are supposed to be excellent swimmers, but it would unbalance the game towards lizards. Then we'd need to give every other race abilities and the halflings at least two abilities--to make up for their inability to swim.

Also, you'd need three different water tiles. Wading tiles, deep tiles, and impassable tiles. Otherwise people would swim to the edge of the map, and that would look pretty ridiculous.

On the other hand, if players were given the ability to swim, they'd also be given the ability to misuse it. People would take the river as a shortcut instead of taking the bridge if they weren't near it. That, also, would look ridiculous. I don't remember a time in my life when I was standing at the Saginaw River and thinking "hmmmm....although I could take the bridge, it would be quite a walk. I think I'll swim it." This is partly because the Saginaw River is highly polluted, but also largely because your average river isn't a short swim. Trust me on this, I live smack dab in the middle of the world's largest supplier of fresh water: Michigan.

As another option, you could only give lizardmen the ability to swim and give every other race some ability to make up for the loss, but that would take alot of work.

we planned this in the past, but have to check it again

healing
lockpicking
setting traps
swimming
Why donb't you read the proposals that are very long on the site?
The tiles are moveabel ,but only for gms and i think they can ignore every tile or item (wall, tabel, chair...).
When someday swimming is included i think we should make a real swamp with dangerous tiles that maybe really suck your life away or instant "kill" you.
This abilitys will be imclude because they have already thoughs about it so maybe Elfes get a bonus on magic but maybe bad in melee fighting or so and only give izards the ability is not good i think then others want to jump on trees (elf) or maybe wanna move burried (dwarf) move hiding (halfling) get nearly instant kill (orc) or uhmm well humans get something so the only-one-race-swimming-thing is bad in my eyes

I'll see your quote and raise you another quote:

I didn't really care to check all that much, because I knew it was probably already suggested (if something as elaborate as dragon riding can be suggested by now, swimming can too I believe). I also assumed it had been planned in the past, but I decided it would be best to suggest it now, "in light of recent events."

I don't think there would be a need for three tiles. Two, definitely; shallow and deep. Though for now, all we would need is shallow, wouldn't we? If "shallow" water cut the view of your character down to half, you could use the "shallow" water for every water tile, then implement the good idea suggested by Val De Gausse to lose health after swimming for a while, so that no one could swim to the edge of the map. Still sounds feasible to me. This proposal is, of course, geared towards all races.

I think halflings should get a bonus for swimming, because of their big feet.
Could make them really fast

Swimming is not technically possible at the moment.

Then how about just drowning then? :D

Maybe the GM's don't want us swimming just yet. Maybe they don't want us visiting a certain secret island.

Maybe they don't want us to break the server by swimming beyond the borders of the map?

Even Civ2 prevents you from doing that! CIV II!! What are we playing here?

I always thought of the "health" bar as an endurance bar, actually.

While the health is something that can be roleplayed. But naturally, if you run out of endurance, you'll die of exhaustion.

Now, imagine dying of exhaustion trying to swim? Kind of a pain, isn't it?

We don't even need REAL in-game swimming. We just need people to accept it is possible to our chars, despite the fact that it isn't in the game yet, or at all.

This idea was proposed multiple times already.

For obvious reasons, this is not possible.
