Help with mining

Can someone help me please? I try mining where the manual tells you to, but nothing happens except my character gets tired. Am I doing something wrong, or is this meant to happen?

might be doing somethign wrong-ask a Master miner or someone experienced for help-ingame of course. As to "be taught the techneqes needed to mine" or something
