I can only speak for myself, not for Dyluck. I always search the person and jail them, if I stand near them. But there is also the problem of the game engine. There is no possibility to hold someone. The criminal can run as long as he want without the chance to catch him technically. That doesn't also make no sense. And typing a command takes time. So what shall I make, if he run and run? When have I catched him really? Always concidering, what the game engine allows and what not.
Think also about Troll's Bane as a town. There are several people on streets, normally the gates are guarded in a medival town. Sure, noone can play 24/7. Therefore no guardsystem will work and there are times, not many players are online. But on the other hand, a crimininal, marked through a public trial, walking openly in town, selling/buying in the shop with Eliza doesn't make much sense. That is also bad rp.
This point has been brought up time and time again, and sadly enough I feel that it needs to be brought up yet again due to the extremely poor roleplaying of at least one wanted criminal in the town of Trolls Bane. I use the following character as an example and mean no insult to the player, but I have witnessed this one character behaving in this way on more than one occasion and feel it is necessary to make a special note of this situation because I am sure he is not the only one behaving in such a way, and this should be stopped for the betterment of the community, present and future. This said, let us continue.
The character Kale Orton has been tried and found guilty by the Lyrenzia judicial system and sentenced to time in prison. He has never been captured and thus is still sought after by the Lyrenzia authorities. This is all very good rp, but this is where the good rp stops.
Presently, Kale Orton walks the streets of Trolls Bane freely. He comes into town to start fights and further his murdering spree or other crimes without considering the fact that he is a wanted criminal and there are numerous guards or citizens searching for him. This is horrendous rp. He does not act out any evasive tactics to get him past the town guards that would be standing at the town gates, be they real characters or only imagined guards (as Aragon said, it is not possible for the players of town guards to be online 24/7 so there will not always be a town guard character online, but there would almost always be a guard at the gates of a walled community such as Trolls Bane, and therefore we have to at least imagine there are some at each gate as well as walking the streets). He does not hide in shadows or within a cloak to hide his identity. He comes to town and makes a scene nearly every time. I have witnessed him at least twice up to this point within the town
when there were very few characters online, standing directly in front or even within the shop, each time attempting to start a fight with the intent of dealing death to the opposition. How does he come into town? He waits until there are no characters with the capability to throw him in jail online, and then he himself comes online and goes about a normal day in the life of Kale Orton within the town of Trolls Bane, when finished, he logs off right in the middle of town so that he can come online once more within the town limits. This much I saw today, on other occasions he may leave the city limits but I cannot speak on that which I have never witnessed.
A character that is a criminal or walks the path of evil is a welcome addition to this game, but it has to be done properly. This player must be able to grasp the true meaning of roleplaying a character who lives on the other side of the Law; someone who understands that no matter what the time of day or night, there will always be someone in the town (Just because a certain character is not online does not mean they have vanished. If they reside within Trolls Bane, they are still there even when offline unless otherwise specified.). In the case of Trolls Bane, a walled, gated and guarded city, there will almost always be guards cognizant of the fact that you are a criminal and will bar your entry at any gate if they recognize you. That you must find a way into this guarded city each time you enter because you are, after all, a criminal. That you will be apprehended if found within the town walls and escorted straight away to prison if you don't make your presence hidden once inside the town walls and in the open. If the player can't live up to such high requirements, they should rethink their character's role.
If you're going to play a murderer, thief, or other well-known criminal character then you cannot enjoy the liberties that those who play lawful or non-convicted criminal characters have. You cannot freely enter the city. You cannot freely roam the town. You cannot freely do business with Eliza. All of this is true,
unless you have a valid roleplaying reason to be doing so. You can of course enter the city if you find a way past the guards at the gate. You can walk the streets if you hide your identity or even your person in some manner. There are an infinite number of ways to enter and exit the town, but you should act out at least one each time you do. There are an infinite number of ways to hide yourself within the town and from the guards and citizens searching for you, but you should act out at least one every time you are in the town.
Just because there is nobody online who can send you to prison does not mean you should feel safe knowing that you cannot go to prison in this visit to town. That is an exploitation of the technical capabilities of this game and truly horrific roleplaying. If you're going to come to town knowing that you are a wanted criminal, have some way of getting into the guarded town. Have some way of not being captured once in the town. If you’ve served your time, you’ve served your time. If, however, you are on the run from the law, you have to run from the law. Roleplay a criminal, don't just act as a person breaking the law without any repercussions, recognize that there is a force behind the law and act appropriately or don't act as a criminal at all. This should all be common sense, but as most of us have seen within the game, unfortunately, it is not. Hopefully some of those acting in this disgusting manner will read this and change their ways, or those in the future who had thoughts of being a criminal will gain some insight into all that this lifestyle entails and live up to the expectations and gain the rewards and praise for being one of the few who could actually pull it off.
As for ways to improve the current situation, which allows criminals to walk the streets and terrorize the citizens in a poorly roleplayed manner because those with the power to place a convicted criminal in prison are offline, I see only a few solutions. One, and the most important in my eyes, is for the players themselves to improve their roleplaying. For the players of criminal characters to have their characters act as criminals, and if you chose for them to enter the town, realize that they are surrounded by hundreds of citizens and dozens of guards who want to see your character behind bars. Even late at night, there will always be some guards on duty, and some citizens awake. The second way to improve the situation would be to grant a few more highly respected roleplayers, who are online a fair amount of time (not to take anything away from Dyluck or any of the others with “keys”, but it is hard for anyone to have their character do a job when they are hardly ever online), whose character’s role would allow them to work for the judicial system of Lyrenzia with the ability to place convicted criminals in prison if captured.
If anyone else has any input on the matter, I would love to hear it, unless it concerns the length of my post and the low attention span of such a reader. I’m sorry for such a long post but such a basic concept as this is overlooked for some reason and it needs to be corrected, and hopefully informing these people that they are in fact acting poorly will help to change their actions and improve the roleplay in the game immensely for the rest of us.
