But to have social interactions, a character doesn't need to be powerful. Playing a weak character can be fun as well, can't it?
In theory, yes. In reality, apparently not. Most people seem to prefer to pretend to be something greater than they are in real life. Few prefer to create a mirror of the deficiencies and weaknesses they embody in reality within a game.

EDIT:
For example, a nerd would rather fantasize about being a nerd with powers rather than the nerd he is that gets bullied at recess.

A dumb jock would rather fantasize about being a jock with brains rather than the jock he is who can't spell athlete.

I can understand that. But the problem is, when skills are really easy to get, pretty soon everyone is powerful, and it's not really much of an accomplishment. I've just always disliked getting powerful too quick, because it makes it feel like nothing special.

How fast skill gains could be has little to nothing to do with social interaction. Just as well as how slow they are. And if Galim has a point as to why he should be able to continue an old character, skill-less, item-less, when these "gains" are so hard to achieve; how does any of this stand in argument against discontinuing all old characters and starting completely new ones?

I'd dare say it just serves the point that it would be wiser to start off completely new...
