What do the GMs get out of it? Different things.

Playing a game, dang, this game sucks! This game is not fun, I could do better than that! And they do.
Reward: Making Bigger Better Things.
Reward: Having a game to play that is actually fun.

Playing a game, the GMs act like garbage, treating the players like trash, doing whatever they want and generally ticking people off. Dang it, I could treat people better than that! They suck. And they become GMs to do things better.
Reward: Knowledge of a job well done making people happy for a change.
Reward: Self gratification being as wise as King Solomon.

Playing a game... this one bites. Playing a game.. this one bites. Dang it, aint' there any good games out there? Since there are no good ones out there, I'll make one.
Reward: A fun game to play. Basically the same as the first one but a litte different.

Playing a game, dang, those GMs can do anything! Wow, they can make stuff, build, dude, they're the cat's meow! I wanna be a GM!
Reward: Power hype.
Reward: Wow, I didn't know you could do this!
Reward: Woah, dude, you know you could do this?

Playing a game, dang, I wanna get these people, let me become a GM to screw them.
Reward: PKers nirvana
Reward: Muahahahaha!
Reward: D3wd, 1'/\/\ 5o 1337!

Need I go on? There are as many reasons and rewards as there are GMs.

What do you get out of playing the game?

Well, I doubt there are as many rewards and reasons as there are players (I could be wrong  ).

I'm just entertained by all the different characters there are, whether they be completely stupid or out of context, or a hard-core role-playing devotee. This game is like reading a book but you have the ability to add your own parts to it and change the story as you go along. I just find this kind of thing to be fun. It gives me a place to use a little of my imagination and apply it to something instead of letting it slip away from me never to be seen again. I've also developed more story ideas from playing Illarion.

I like Malinne's answer.
I'm not a GM, but that is why I play.
It's like reading a book. I like to read the Dragonlance series of books. The difference in Illarion is a have a role in the book and I can do things to change how the story line goes.

Its kind of funny, because Paul Laffing reminded me of a book I read which some of you might be familiar with, Stranger in a Strange Land by Heinlein. I'm not going to go into all the details, but its about life on Mars and human nature, basically. Well, Martian cities get so full of emotion over hundreds of years that they need to destroy them and make new ones (martians are more in tune with their environment). Paul Laffing had too much emotion and story and background and things like that in him, that there was no more room, so it was time to get rid of him and pave over him, so to speak. :D
