I'm also going to stop adding the signature. I just thought maybe it would look more interesting. Instead, I always have to enter the same coding, and it gets really old after awhile...

May I ask why halflings/hobbits likes to get called halflings? Halfling is the name used for hobbits, by humans. And hobbit is the "real" name for them according to Tolkien himself.

But if you follow Tolkiens world, you will also know that orcs and goblins are the same.

Hobbit is a word which originates in the Rohirrim language from middle- earth. This is not middle- earth, so there is no land Rohan and no Rohirrim language, and hence no word "hobbit".

Hobbit is a word that is so entrenched in the fantasy language and world that it is almost synonymous with the word halfling in meaning. It is useless to try to get people to use one word whether it be halfling or hobbit. Let people use the word they want.

The originate word you're looking for is Holbytlan, wich means hole-builders. But, it is yet not proven that Tolkien was the one inventing the word Hobbit, so hobbit or halfling, doesn't matter.

"Same shit different names"
Are you saying hobbits/halflings are...shit?

Its a quote.

I think everyone knows its a quote. The quotation marks do make that a bit obvious.
What is being asked is what the poster of that quote intended for the quote to mean...

Well, the question is:

how do Halflings/Hobbits call themselves?

For shure they wont call themselves Haflings, which is a bit derogatory and obviously created by the big people.

That's what I thought too Galdriel but seems like they like to be called halflings.

@Elaralith, I wasn't serious.. :wink:

It' s strange...halfling was a term created by Men as a "insult" to the height of that race...very strange for people to like to be insulted. :?

In first instance I call myself Zasmia :-P

Why does everyone bother about how my race is called? Ingame I call humans "big ones", elves are "tall ones" and orcs are "green ones" (brr). If I had to decide, I would be statisfied with both, halfling and hobbit. But as I stated before, one (halfling) look at the language skill should clear it up. In Illarion we are Halflings, not Hobbits.
It' s strange...halfling was a term created by Men as a "insult" to the height of that race...
Were and when in Illarion did this happen? I must have missed that.

Elaralith sounds like you read something I wrote, but I never implied that it was an insult. And as I have already said, this is not Tolkiens world.

Personally I think that Hobbit sounds like a nicer word for Halfling, but that's my oppinion.

paul laffing wrote:I HEARD that halfing is considered a derogatory name by some, as it is insulting the height of a hobbit, but I think that hobbit is just the name of the shirefolk, as when Gandalf talked about Smeigol (or golem), he said that he was part of the riverfolk and was related to hobbits. Not conclusive, but still more evidence. :D
Okay, I stood idle while Elaralith quoted me, but now Tal takes credit for something I said? This is despicable... :(

Hmmm....to be sure I brought this up months before you both of you ever even knew about this issue....it doesn't matter though.

@Zasmia It happened just the way that "Elves" are called "Elves"...in other words it is general fantasy knowledge.

But in Illarion halflings are called halflings, not hobbits, as we are in Illarion, not Middle Earth or another fantasy place.

THE GOLDEN QUESTION: WHATS THE DIFFERENCE?

Posted: Thu May 22, 2003 9:11 am
by Dorfus
None. People are giving their thoughts on what they think they should be called. Personally, I like halfling. :)

Just call them midgets. :D

Teh, migits? No. There is no need to call em that. I think they all should be known as, "The Little Ones."

I think it would be very intersting. "Hello little one A. Hello little one B. How are things going little one C?" Yes, that indeed will be the day...

Yeah, it'd be funny seeing you saying "little one" to a hobbit/halfling that's possibly twice your age, though. It's true in some cases, you know.

Whats wrong with midgets? Its not "politically correct" for you?

I actually agree with Dorfus. Why would you call them migits? That wouldn't be right, and I'm sure most agree. Of course, if you were joking, it would sound fine.

It's like calling orcs frogs, or Elves Lanky. An insult.

If you call them midgits you may turn into one yourself, there are some hobbits who you can insult for as long as you like, but mention their height in a disrespectful way and *WHACK!* off with yer legs :P
