Actually the portal is just a piece of fizzling blue energy. you dont see through it, only if you step your head through (too dangerous cause when the portal dissapears your head is chopped off) or if your essence is high enough to SENSE where the magic energy of the portal is linked to.

Thank goodness you have the omnipotent answer to Illarion's magic. I love the proposal by the way, but I can imagine the work for it is tiresome.

Ah, I was still with Alex proposal to step the head through the portal. Now it makes sense

I meant you look at it and you see out the other end.
There's no written rules about illarion portals.
Points:
You like going through portals and not knowing where you'll end up? Noone's forcing you to examine them.
You want to get a warrior in a portal? SUL SOLH QWAN + Push him in.
This shouldn't be based on stats at all but if it were to be, it should be: Taran taraaa: PERCEPTION.
i.e. "Can I identify a destination through a blurry portal?" Especially if it's just grass and trees on the other side or whatever.
And, for the record, I have 3 perception so I'm not being biased.

What about :
#me sticks his head through the portal. Bad timing, because the Portal just vanishes... the headless body falls to the ground.
*ghost*
XD

by AlexRose
Yeah that'd be good xD.
One in 20 chance of that happening. And then you have a 50% chance of having your ghost appear in either destination. So checking that portal leads to the Hug of Sirani isn't necessarily a good idea xD.
But seriously, just the thing I said in my previous post, none of this sillyness

.

Yes, sillyness like that would be a bad idea.
Anyhow, one can assume that you definitely see / feel a portal going down before it closes, or that it does not cut off stuff but just teleports things if the most of their mass has passed the event horizon.

Alex, feel free to script the function that you can see through it.
Otherwise:
Dont step through portals when unsure if there might be danger on the other side you cant handle (like a frog!!! they are dangerous)
Or step into and get surprised
Last suggestion. Live with the point it will be on the NICE TO HAVE list and you are already dead when its implemented.

I am something between everything and nothing.
Something between heaven and hell.
And i guess you do now like me for pwning that suggestion

Pwning?
All we need to do is find someone with no life who'll do a copy-paste job
Its not "Too hard to implement" its just "too boring"

by AlexRose
You didn't "pwn" anything. Nitram already said that it's possible (he usually doesn't comment in any threads). Adrian even said he'll volunteer to do it. So wtf are you smoking?

Yes, its boring.
And yes, noone wants to do boring stuff.
So why the hell do you think someone is gonna do it in the near future?
But anyway, i like the portal surprise thingy.
And yeah, dont smoke pot before bedtime.

.. There's a difference between saying
"OH PLZPLZ CODE PRIEST MAGIC"
And,
"Replace 70 values with other values".
And Adrian already said he'd volunteer.
And in fact he's sending me the scripts so I can do it. It's that easy. It's just that there's 70 of them. So it will take a whole 10 minutes. Oh no. The horror.

by Rekarafi
Like i said, feel free to do it, if you want.
And there is also a difference in the importance between
OH PLZPLZPLZ GIMME PRIEST MAGICZ
or
yah, some portal watching, yah, would be nice, yah?
But okay, if you do it, i see no point not to implement it.
The ones who like surprises (like me) would just not look at the portal and step through, and the others
(like you, as i guess from your statements) would look if the portal leads right back to a destination you want to go to

No, I can summon portals so I don't care. This is for other people because I think it's overpowered.

Hmm...if you are not sure if you are good enough for the other side...do not step through.
I mean, you are not forced to enter portals, are you?
Even if i like the RP of stumbling through a portal which was not noticed

Watch out, sometimes portals can randomly lead to the cow level !

Maybe you didnt discover yet cause no mage is as strong to make a portal to this dangerous and mysterious place.
but still, frogs are more dangerous.
demon frogs should be implemented.

English-only version of this is currently on the test-server. Alex stayed writing the text.
Now once they get a translation they might get implemented.

A little off topic here but related nonetheless...I would like to have more control over where the portal opens when I use a book...
Also ive often thought it would be nice to be able to to portal to say your home, by being able to put the location in a book or on a parchment, of course this might be a mage job, but if it could be done, then a way to generate income... *shrug* just a couple of thoughts.

Thad would be cool, but books are currently like spell scrolls.
So there can be several spells in the book so you can choose your destination (which would be easier to make i guess)
Or you would have a book for every location in town (which would be not good)
But yeah, make portal books destination in town (f.e. TB) able to be changed (TB market, Elizas, Arena, ect)

On-the-fly portal destinations are currently impossible. They'd require a good amount of rework I suppose - since the datavalue isn't enough to store a co-ordinate.
However adding a destination is REALLY easy, it is possible that (for example) you could pay the builder to make a portal destination to a building or something. The change needed is trivial and 5 minutes of work.

Hadrian_Abela wrote:since the datavalue isn't enough to store a co-ordinate.
Wrong. But how do you want to know the coordinates the portal leads to? Shall the player say the target coordinate before the spell is spoken?
Anyway the amount of targets for portals will be reduced to a more reasonable amount of targets anyway. For example the targets within towns will be removed.

So you're telling me that its possible to have an item, which when used stores its position as a data value, which can then be used to open a portal to that location? Because that's how I understood it.
And I thought the 'multiple datavalues' wasn't going to get implemented.
