I think the divide comes between players who play illarion for the massively immersive and deep roleplay that thy can get sucked into.
And those that play illarion so they can play as whatever in a roleplay community, but have an ooc giggle from time to time playing it.
Of course there is nothing wrong with either of these standpoints.
Its just the first group hate the second for destroying their immersion, and the latter hate the first for taking things too seriously.

Even if you're of the first "group", you should not loose your humor in things.
Taking the game too serious takes the fun of it, because you take yourself too serious and then loose the ability to enjoy it when anything happens that you do not expect.
Illarion is a FANTASY world, not a purely medieval world. Here, things like fairies and talking rabbits can HAPPEN. There is magic in it and there is myth in it, but there should also be some fun in it.
The most online games have either "tragical" or "epic" quest lines or storylines without any fun in between. Having some fun and even some ridiculous humor or even Monthy-Python-alike situations was one thing that made illaruion different from Diablo, Runescape and World of Warcraft.
But now, players are complaining about everything that makes the game what it is. They are destroying the soul of it with enormous complains because of small things, which drive some staff members mad (who have better stuff to do than listening to rantings).
Many old players are leaving or have left, and whomever i asked, they all said "it's just not fun to play anymore."
If illarion becomes just another UO freeshard or Tibia world (just without all the leet), then i am out of here too, and it is on the best way to end like this. And we have some very last chances to change this. If we don't Illarion will loose the rest of what it was, and completely fails the goal of what it was supposed to be.

The problem is, that sense of humour is anything but universal. People don't find same kind of stuff funny or enjoyable, and every quester should remember that.
You can't just point a finger at person and command "Enjoy!".. or you can, but it won't work.

Anyhow, the fun situation which caused this discussion, had about 14 votes of "excellent" and three (if i include the guy saying "all quests suck anyway") who said that it was bad.
And this minority of ranters has just driven one of the most active ESQS questers out of the ESQS team (and perhaps even out of illa).
In the staff we will soon discuss about if we should totally drop the concept of Human steered quests and make scripted, engine controlled quests only, because there is ALWAYS ranting by some players about ANY qest which is done NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO. Good night, illarion. Hello, Runescape. With the small difference that even runescape has more humor in it.
Is that really where we want to go ? If yes, just continue with that.
I myself was very close to leaving a few times during the last year, and kinda almost stopped playing completely by now. The only thing i still do is a bit quest support now and then (or creating some event things now and then, like the dragon quest, together with Narmir or other ESQS members from time to time). If illarion stays like it is now, or even gets worse (and it IS getting worse), i will most likely go somewhere else where i can enjoy playing and roleplaying without everyone complaining about the smallest shit as soon as the background here is finished (which has done, thanks to martins map making art, some great progress lately).

so you want to tell us that those "ranters" - meaning players which tell resp. write what they think, make their opinion public, drive questers out of illa ? ... what about those questers taking those "annoying" ranters too serious ?!
And as far as I learned from posts, some people had some problems with some of your former quests.
excuse me Damien, I surely won't stop posting my opinion, if you like to hear it or not, if you can't handle criticism, you should quit - as you told me before. And I surely am no person ranting about every little thing happening, that I don't like. I take most of the changes and the quests I experience as they are, because I appreciate the work that you guys are doing. But this, Damien, went way too far.

Hello new many stupid bad words who has just joined the flamewar, thats not what damien is saying
hes saying whatever he or anyone else on the quest team does is going to piss SOMEONE off and so illarion should just go to scripted quests because someone is always going to be pissed off and they are sick of trying to make us all happy
which is the point I was trying to make to all you whiney many stupid bad words to begin with
but you all don't many stupid bad words listen
so many stupid bad words
It makes me sick that you are not able to argue in a friendly way.
Avoid words like "fucking in the closer future. Those useless posts help noone. If you have nothing better to write. Just stay quite.

@everyone thinking those involved can't handle criticism:
To me, there is a difference between criticism and flaming. Criticism is stating what you didn't like about something in a constructive and helpful way. I am welcome to hearing these types of comments, and I feel I have learned from those that have been posted already. You guys get cookies.
Flaming, on the other hand, is making angry posts about how you hated something and think it sucks or was shitty or whatever. To me, and probably to most people, these are not helpful at all and only make things frustrating for those of us who thought to give people a bit of fun.
Criticize and state your opinion, yes, but calm down a bit before doing so or it will only have negative effects. I think everyone should consider that when they run into a situation that they don't like.

@Returner
A hunch, but far bigger factor in regards to people quitting and the "game not being fun" is abusive behaviour toward your fellow players like that. Not any founded or unfounded criticism towards questing / staff.
@Damien
So what are you saying, Damien? No criticm allowed? Because, that will surely create a fun game.

Feel free to continue to your heart's content, Returner. But maybe it would be more credible way to manifest your awesome respect to the staff by, well.. dunno? Trying to follow the rules for once while you are on their side? Maybe you would feel that you actually appreciated and respected them and what they did, instead of saying one thing and doing the other at the same time.
Cheers.

Oh no, not rule 3, not the rule everyone breaks daily and nobody cares about! oh please staff, forgive me! I SHOULD HAVE RECOGNIZED MY CRUEL AND UNUSUAL WAYS OF BREAKING ONE RULE NOBODY FOLLOWS ANYWAY!

Yeah. Exactly, since.. [sic]everyone does it 'it' suddenly is alright? For the record, not 'everyone' does 'it'.. just a very vocal minority who are for some strange reason unable to treat their fellow posters with even the basic respect when there is some disagreement.
Maybe you should sit back, think about this and try to behave in the future.
But anyways, I am out of this discussion.

Since that discussion got slightly out of hand i think we draw the finish line here.
The quest got maybe a little out of hand. And some reacted a little with too less humor on it.
Some of us, did misstakes, but we all do this from time to time.
Misstakes exsists so we can learn from them.
So long and thanks for all the fish,
Nitram
