my java is 1.5.0_06 alternatively 1.5.0_08
my pc is:
AMD sempron, 1024 MBRAM
win 98se
GeForce4 MX 440 with AGP8X
DirectX updated from 6.1a to 9.0c
after the umteenth reinstallation of java and the client, the result is, that i need half an eternety to load illa. (as a window)
evenusing the stored #mes works not correctly anymore.
i push a "F" button, the text appears after ten seconds. i push "enter" to send it, after another ten seconds it dissappears, without being published.
the mouse is frozen.
the red and green bar show normally, as do the items in hands and belt.
moving the char does not work any more.
"ESC" does not react.
"ctrl"+"Alt"+"Del" do not react. -- edit: neither does "Alt"+"Tab".
to get out of illa, i have to restart the pc with the restart button.

Korm's recent problem sounds realy strange, but maybe the last DirectX 9.0c is not compatible with Win98SE anymore?
And I think it is not easy for Nop to get rid of that bug, because for the most people ist works.
An interesting question would be: Do ALL Win98 users have that problem?

Do ALL Win98 users have that problem?
i dont know. but ALL who have the prblem so far, have win98 and a video card with Nvidia/GeForce chips (64 MB, if i got it right)
two questions:
anybody knows how to desinstall a DirectX 9.xxx without formating the drive?
till which version do people have DirectX on a win98se machine, without problems?

When a nVidia graphics card is a cause for the problems, you should try to use the latest driver (or: everybody should post their used drivers).

There are workaround but there are no guarantees for a working system afterwards. Use your favorite search engine to find instructions.

I did a fast search but found nothing about problems on Windows 98 SE with DirectX 9.0c. I know there are more versions of 9.0c out there; according to Wikipedia the latest is the "August 2006 Build".
PS: Maybe your DirectX installation is corrupted. Try "Run..." (Start Menu) and then "dxdiag".

dxdiag was ok even with9.0c build.
at the moment i cant even start 98 on that mashine.
now its crying for various .dlls.

My system works fine with win 98 and DX 9.0c
It worked fine with Illarion until the V0.98 update.
Korm's problem is something different at the moment (on top of the Illarion problem).
Have you tried reinstalling your video card/drivers since changing to DX 9.0c? Or maybe try a slightly older version of DX and see if you get the same problems.
Could also check your hardware configuration. Make sure there are no conflicts there. Make sure only the current hardware/drivers/etc are listed.

i have cleaned that pc completly now. just win98se directX9.0c and some tools.
no bad registry entrances, nothing.
now, which version of java runtime enviroment do you recommend me to install?
and how shall i install the client? online? or downloading and offline?

The java environment does not really seem to matter, I would recommend using _08.
Online installation is the preferred way.
Your previous problem sounds like low performance due to bad drivers - probably software rendering, not using the graphics card at all. But getting an "F" after 10 seconds means that you don't have the "mute"-Problem.

nop,
thanks. i'll install again....
but its the problem we all have. we can emote what was prepared before. but we cant write new emotes or speech.
korm
edit.
i checked with directXdiag.
the only thing, working with software, instead of hardware is the sound.

That isn't reliable. OpenGL might still be working in software.

well, it is going on four weeks now, that i can not play.
is there any real hope, that the bug might be found and fixed?

Yes. I am working on an alternate implementation of the keyboard handling along some code offered in the forums. Maybe that will help. But I am back at work now, not a lot of time for hobby development.

Hi, I'm having the same problems with typing/speech in the game but I have Windows ME.
If anyone knows of a fix, please let me know because I'm dying to play the game.
Thanks

well, my provisional solution:
i play on the pc of my daughters.
XP and veeeery slow.
if somebody greets me, he is about two screens off, when my answer finally appears...

Ok, I have changed the way the input routines work in V0.98a. Maybe this helps with the problem. If not, there is not much else that I can do.

do we have to make a new install?
or is the change on the server side?

No.
Sorry V0.98a makes no difference at all to me.
Everything is the same as before. Game loads/runs fine but with no typing possible.

Thank you for the update, it loads OK, but I'm afraid I still can't type in the game.

Ok, I have made a debug version of the client. Maybe this will help us nail down the problem.
Please do the following:
1. Find your illarion folder (path given in the info box of the client)
2. delete error.log and console.log if there are any
3. start the debug client from this URL
http://www.illarion.org/~nop/illarion_debug.jnlp

Nop,
i can not send anything at the moment.
i have tried so many different configurations, drivers and even hardware parts, that i have completly mutilated my win98.
after i'll have backed up my files to another pc, i will format the drive, and install completly new.
then i will see, how it behaves with java and illa.
