You would know who tells you, though. Again, the peasants and random bystanders belong to the GM's. The post should have a direct person who tells you who said what.
But that someone else than the actual starter of the rumor has to post it on the rumors thread and that is not very likely to happen since most (probably) think that it is true and not a rumor.
Even the truth can be made into a rumor. The GM's usually use the rumor board for that very matter--to expose some hints that are supposed to be true in an ingame sort of way.

Maybe you picked it up from a group of people. So that is not a valid argument either. At times, you CANNOT know who told you.
You might forget who told you, but at some time, someone told you and you knew who it was at that point. As for it being a group that told you, are you in control of this group, or is this group not unlike the peasants described above? We can only control our own characters and hope for the best.
