A few screenshots, just because I feel like posting.

Testers might notice that this is not the chipset used for the Lofty Mountains, but hopefully I'll find the energy to convert it someday.

That's right. It's the Secret of Mana chipset.

@Brendan: Haha... I'll get rid of that puzzle in the next version if I still can't figure out where the problem is.

On another note, I'm also looking for someone who has/knows how to use a program that can edit some music, namely midis. Basically I need to cut off some "pause time" at the beginning/end of some songs, so that they loop more smoothly.

I can use that midi program I mentioned earlier to mess around with midi's, if you release the first portion of the game. Muhaha!

Just a reminder: I'm still interested in showcasing some original music compositions in the game, whether midi or mp3, if anyone would like to have their work in use.

Meanwhile, some random screenshots:

Just thought I'd post up this screenshot as an example of how a landscape picture can be used in the background in actual gameplay. They can even be used in battle screens if designed appropriately. It can even be made that the player can for example collects items called "pictures" in the game, and when used, bring up a picture of just about anything!

The only real restrictions are the 320 x 240 maximum for the image size, and that the final picture has to be "indexed in 256 colors", whatever that means (but I know the function for that in photoshop). So if anyone would like to do some artwork to be used in the game, whether hand drawn or whatever, again just let me know.

Also, I'm looking for some designs for a "box cover", like what you see on the cover of a ps2 game, etc. I do already have a box template that you can maybe start from too. This is one where hand drawn art could be more fitting to maybe draw some original images, so if any of you artists are interested, I'd be happy to see if I can give your work a try.

Also, if someone would like to make a new title screen, I could consider that too if it has its appeal, even though I do fairly like the one I'm already using. This is the one I'm currently using, just to refresh memories:

The template I have is more like a square, like a gameboy/ps1 type of box. I'll send it over to people who want to work on it. You could always just start from scratch and make it whatever size and design you like though. Oh and of course this is purely for internet display. It's not like I'm expecting my game to someday be on the shelf of an EB store nearest you. Or at least, extremely unlikely ;)

I haven't had much time to work on the game lately, but I have finished a chapter more since what was in the verison you had. I'll possibly get another round of testing going if I finish one more chapter, but I really don't know when that might be.

And honestly, I'm thinking over which plot/character ideas I have that I will or will not put into the game, because I want to save some of them for possibly another game in a setting entirely created by myself, instead of being limited in some aspects by the exsisting world and character schemes of Illarion.

Interested in doing battle animations for my game?

All you have to do is draw various 96 by 96 pixels images for some kind of battle attack, spell, or effect.

There can be a maximum of 25 different images per battle animation, and those images should be evenly spaced put on a final image of width and height 480 by 480 pixels, or any multiple of 96 that is less than 480. You don't HAVE to make 25 different images, and even if you do use a 480x480 final image, you don't HAVE to fill out all 25 of the 96x96 spaces with some kind of image, and it doesn't even HAVE to be in order, although it should.

Or if you don't understand the above instructions, you can just simply open your drawing program (photoshop or whatever), set your image to 96x96, draw away, make a couple of them, and post it up or send it to me at dyluckedina@hotmail.com and I will find someone else to compile them properly.

Take this for example, made by someone else I found somewhere:
(just ignore the logo on the bottom right :wink: )
As you can see, this image is 480 by 384, which means it has 20 evenly spaced out frames of 96x96, even though not all of them might be used.

Image

I'd say the drawing/lighting/shading on this is pretty good, but I would accept pretty much anything you could make, as long as it isn't some crude ms paint job (unless you can work miracles with it or something).

I can also put each frame on various positions in the actual animation, so for example in a simple sword slashing graphic, you only need to make one "slash" graphic and I can simply "move" it to create an animated effect, although it would look quite crude I imagine.

Feel free to ask if you have any more questions.

Hmm, it looks to me like someone's made the leap from RPGM 2k to RPGM XP. :wink:

But... isn't the standard RTP horrible? :shock:
And where is that "somewhere" where you found that sweet fire animation?

Actually, I'm using neither 2k nor XP, but 2K3 as I always have. Not sure what made you think I was using XP, since both 2K and 2K3 are already capable of battle animations, as far as I know.

"Somewhere" is some various rpgmaker sites. Can't remember which one. But if you see something else with that same logo on it, then the creator is probably the same guy.

Aw, shucks. I never had a go at 2k3, but I found 2k horrible. :|

And why I thought it looks like XP. Well, 2k looks horrible to me. :]

Just so nobody gets overwhelmed by that spiffy looking fire spell, you can make something as simple as this default sword slash. It's 480x480, which means there are 5 by 5 (25) possible images, even though only 6 drawings are made.

In fact, only the first three images are used in the actual animation. The particular animation used only 5 frames and showed the slashing images in the order of 1,2,3,2,1, if you understand what I mean.

Image

Also I forgot to mention that I can also use more than one image per fram in the actual animation. So with this slashing one, I can actually put three of them per frame to make a giant "claw" attack if I wanted. Just so you know, you CAN theoretically make say half of a large lightning bolt on one 96x96 image, and then the other half on another 96x96, and I could show them both at the same time to create the entire lightning bolt, althought it might be a little work for me to align them properly.

I got a little lazy and started playing FF5 instead after that link came up in the other forum.
Updates... let's see...

-I began on modifying a battle scene from the intro to make it better than ever.

-Been stalling for a while now, trying to decide whether or not to redo some of the maps with better looking chipsets. Finally decided to just stick with what I have for now.

-Finally got around to adding some finishing touches to some of the new areas, such as adding the appropriate monsters.

-Now sporting some spiffy music compositions by Delekaniam.

-Not getting as enthusiastic a reposnse to making battle animations as I had hoped.

-And now just working on the next areas/maps & conversations/scenes of the game/story, the usual works, etc.

However, my motivation has been running low lately, partly because I'm busy with things in RL, and partly because most of the players of the characters from the era where the game takes place (and therefore my original intended audience) aren't around anymore anyways. But since some people have given their assitance with the music and graphics, I feel commited to not letting their work go to waste and therefore will definately keep going and finish it. Plus I also want to let everyone see and play it eventually of course.

I'm almost finished with the latest version, and might start recruiting more testers in the next few days. More information will come when the time comes, but reliability will be an important critera for me. I need testers who will report in at least once a week.

Again, I can always use extra hosting space if anyone has maybe 30 to 40mb :) to spare just in case anything happens to my main host.

Updates:
-Lowered encounter rate some more, increased battle speed, and balanced out various numbers some more.

-Some more skills, puzzles, items, treasure, (in both old and new locations), more locations, music, (and some changed music), and some improved details in old locations.

-Some old sidequests made slightly more obvious, improved, and with more rewards.

-Finished adding a crude "Smithing System". You can now smith various items; some of the very same smithed items in real Illarion.

-In the process of finishing some more extra optional sidequests, and obvious ones at that, straight from the Chronicles themselves.

~~~~~
I'm a bit behind schedule because I want to add a few more things before releasing the next version to any testers, but there's also a chance that I might just stop it right here at this coming version and simply make the public release, even though it hasn't really gotten into the big overarching plot yet.
I'm looking for someone to help with graphics editing again now. You mainly just need to perform some basic functions in photoshop or some other graphics program, such as copying and pasting some images together and aligning them properly; mainly drag & drop and look at the ruler/grid to ensure they're aligned, type of work. Right now I need someone to put together a series of "battle weapons" into biggers sets. If anyone is interested in helping, PM me or something. Thanks.
Example:
Take a couple of these...
