Well, what exactly is that? I'm guessing it's a video clip of scenes inside the game server? If so, that's probably not much use, since I don't see how that could fit into my game. I was thinking more of something along the lines of say, some anime cilp of a dragon or a demon coming out from somewhere, or attacking a town, etc. Come to think of it, movies would probably take up a lot of file space for not much reward, so it's probably best not to use movie files anyways.

That all depends on compression, and if your going for a pretty long RPG, its going to be a fair size already, so why not bulk it up a bit with mp3 music and video files? ;)

Yes, let's make sure us dial-uppers can never download it.

Yes, let's make sure those dial up users never use it

Is it not possible to make two versions?

Make a lite version.

Yes, I can make two versions. But that means the host will have to store twice as much. I'm not yet sure where I will find the host for it though.

There will be some mp3s, but mostly midis.
Are there any music composers here? It would be great to showcase some original music, rather than loading up tons of music from other rpgs.

If anyone wants to make some sound effects wav files, that would be interesting too. It could be a battle voice effect like "Yah!" or "Eat steel!" or "Feel my axe!" with a dwarven accent.

If you mean webspace, I have 30MB of webspace that you can use. It saves having to pay someone

Thanks, but you should also know that I'm fairly certain that one version alone will probably be at least 20mb already. I do plan to try and keep any single version under 50mb though.

I'm no music composer, although I did manage to locate a fairly good freeware midi composing program. You can find it here.
http://www.anvilstudio.com/upgraden.htm

I'm still trying to make something that doesn't sound like someone beating a keyboard with a cat.

By the way, does anyone know a good free upload site that we could put our midi's on? I'm making a moderately succesful one.

I'm no great composer myself, but I've taken college-level classes in aural awareness, sight-singing, and music theory, which includes things such as part-writing and rules of melody and harmony. I'd be happy to give suggestions to any original compositions, at least...

Enlighten us on some of the more important rules of melody and harmony, before I accidently kill myself with my own compositions.

Sight-singing is absolutely horrible. I had to do it for my Summer Music exam. Yeeeaaargh!

Do you possibly have anything on score I could see? That would help, but if not that, then maybe a sound file... and if not that, I will rack my brain from cell to cell on the basics to the complex of music-writing. The latter is not preferred, however :) .

It can be a little difficult listing composition rules and structures out of nothing. I also have no idea how much you know about music, in this technical way. If this helps you any, start off by at least finding out which key you've written it in. All other melodies and harmonies from there on should be based around that key. That is, unless you're writing background music for a dungeon level you know everyone will absolutely despise and be dying to get out of anyway, in which case you might just sit back, smile, and put down somewhat randomized runs of ear-wrenching dissonances and unresolved 7th chords. Fun, fun, fun. *evil grin*.

Which is why here where I study, we call it "sight-screaming" .

This is one of the less painful snippets. It's in 4/4 time and in C Major.
What's your prognosis, doctor?

At any rate, my comments go that at first glance, the beats look intimidating to try to play. That is, sight-reading the rhythm on this score would be hell, due to the fact that some places run as 8th-16th-32nd-32nd-32nd-dotted16threst-8th-32nd32nd32nd-16th-16th-8th and so forth :) . However, this might be fault of the program and not yours, where grace notes might be hard to come by, so to speak, of which I'm about to see as soon as my gloriously slow internet connection finishes downloading it.

Melody wise... since this is in C, be sure to at least start this piece on either C, G, or F, in that preferred order. Just as a note, musical phrases tend to start lower, build to a climax, and come back down in a resolve consonant to the key, unless you're writing pieces in the "Demon Dissonances" category. In the key of C, one of the best chords you can land on if you want it to sound "right" probably will consist of C-E-G, regardless of order from top to bottom (inversion). Wow, this is a lot of ranting. Please don't kill me for my personal comments  .

Luckily, I don't have to be concerned about anyone actually being able to play the song, which is good. I'll try keeping the notes around those you suggested, and see how it goes.

Just to make a minor update, I AM back to working on the game, and I'm currently redoing some old maps with some more advanced mapping techniques so that they look better.

By the way, that looks like an interesting composer program. I'll have to take a look at it later when I have some more time.
