Plague

It was on the evening and Keona was preparing dinner, already. Peter sat at the table, his gloomy gaze fixed on a map of the surrounding area, as well as countless snippets of parchments with notes. The men had discussed, but hadn’t any idea, what to do and even Keona was not able to bring up a strategy, yet. They were just far too short on both: time and men.

“Lia, would you please add some more salt, but not that much! Else it will be unenjoyable…”

Lia took the salt from the shelf and stopped right there, repeating Keona’s words to herself. Then, she handed the salt to Keona instead, snipping her fingers.

“That’s it! We just need to be unenjoyable!”

Peter and Keona starred at the young elfess with a confused and questioning gaze, but Lia motioned them both to get close, lowering her voice conspiratorially.

“They want Brimshire for wealth and strategy, right?
What they don’t want, is a plague on their hands.
What if we seal the whole town under a quarantine? And claim to suffer from a contagious disease?
All we have to do is…”

Keona just raised a brow in surprise but then nodded, as Lia continued to explain her idea. Indeed, this could work out. With the men from Nishadaa, the second stage of the plan should not be a problem and if all would go as planned, it would either buy them enough time, until the reinforcements were back from the outpost of Bralenar, or the enemy would give up on their plan.

Moments later, all three of them left the house. Peter would call a secret gathering and explain the plan to the men, while Keona would do the same with the women, having them prepare the first steps. Lia was out to inform the warriors and the other people of Ar-Sikar, that stayed around and instructed the guards.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

The next day, Brimshire was a ghost town. The doors were closed, all windows shut and the gates were sealed off. Only a few people could be seen on the streets and they indeed looked awful. The scene was prepared just perfectly. People worked the whole night, to prepare the real scheme and Lia had sent her owl to inform the elites of Nishadaa about the plan. So, they claimed to be healer’s, called because of the plague, in order to enter the town, as they arrived around noon. Meanwhile, Peter had sent a letter to inform Lord Alethair, struggling to keep it in sort of a humble tone, to buy some time.

To Lord Alethair,

I beg your pardon, should I not find the right words, as I am just a simple farmer. We were informed about your plans to reclaim the town of Brimshire and its outskirts and I am well aware, you are expecting our answer. However, it is my sad duty to inform you, that Brimshire is actually suffering from a plague and we were forced to seal off the town. I highly recommend, not to get close, unless inevitable. Further, I’m concerned, your messenger and his escort could be infected as well, so you might consider to put your camp under a quarantine, as well. Symptoms seem to be nausea, vomiting, the runs, dizziness, headache and fever. Therefore, I have to ask for more time, to get the situation under control, at first. We already sent for help, so please let the healers pass.

May the gods be with us!

On behalf of Brimshire,
Sincerely,

Peter Rotholz

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

It was in the middle of the night, when the two so-called shadows of the elite troop snug into the camp of the enemy to set phase two in motion. The poison, an extract from rowanberries and some herbs, was not lethal, just enough to cause said symptoms…

The Hunter

„My, my… look what we have here…No worry, I was out for boars… and as far as I know, they don’t tend to make camp fires…Relax, boy!”

The deep, warm voice, accompanied by a friendly laughter, belonged to a broad-shouldered man in mid-age, wearing a dark-green tunic and shouldering a crossbow. His short, dark hair and beard already showed some grey streaks and his brown eyes looked friendly. Alongside him was a grey dog, that also seemed slightly beyond his youth. The man gave the odd couple a warm smile as he stepped closer, so they could see him better.

“Mind, if I join you for a bit?”
“Depends… Who are you?”

Aaron stayed on alert, eyeing the man with some mistrust. But Amelia stood calm, as the dog just walked over to her, laying down, as if it was the most normal thing to do, and poked her with his nose. The young woman could not resist to give a light chuckle, as she gently ruffled the dog’s fur. Again, the man laughed in a warm, deep voice.

“Seems, Aras likes you, young lady.”
“Calm down, Aaron. I guess, he is alright. But still, who are you?”

Aaron looked to Amelia rather confused, but seeing her smile, thanks to the dog, he slowly relaxed. They say, pets resemble the personality of their companion. Assuming that was true, this man probably was not a bad guy. He sat down again, motioning the man to join them.

“My name’s Baldur. I’m just a hunter, here in Oldwillows. The question is, who are you and what are the two of you doing outside here, all alone? The area is not safe anymore, you know?”

Amelia slowly lowered her gaze and turned to the flames again. Aras looked up to her, resting his head in her lap as if wanting to give her some comfort. When Baldur reached out a bottle to Aaron, the boy began to tell their story. Baldur’s gaze wandered between them, while he listened to Aaron silently, just giving a nod or stroking his beard, every now and then. When Aaron was finished, he gazed into the flames for a moment, before nodding to himself.

“I see. So, you guys escaped and now, you are trying to bring the girl home again, huh? No worries, I never liked these aristocratic idiots. But it is indeed a long way, that lays before you. And times are even more dangerous than usual…”

“Nothing, I couldn’t handle!”

Aaron pointed at his chest with quite some confidence and gave the man a cheeky gaze. Again, Baldur laughed in his heart-winning manner, patting the Aaron’s shoulder heavily, so, the boy winced a little under the weight.

“Without a doubt, young man! But what about Miss Amelia? Could you protect her? And besides, do you even know the way?”
“Of course I… Well, no, I don’t…”
“Oh, Lords Malachin and Zhambra! See? It would be irresponsible, to let the two of you go alone. Besides, I started to get a bit bored of this easy life. It’s about time, for another adventure, I guess!”
“What do you think, Amelia?”

Amelia gave it all a long thought. Indeed, they did not know the area, not even the direction, they had to walk. And there probably would be bandits and other dangers along the way, for sure. But for some strange reason, she felt a new, strong spark of hope within her heart, when looking at this man. Maybe, meeting Baldur was the answer to her prayers? A way out? A way home? Finally, she gave both a light nod, even managed to bring up a light, confident smile.

“I say, the more, the merrier…”

Again, Baldur laughed lightly, nodding to both.

“Hahaha! That’s the spirit, girl!
Alright! It’s settled, then. We shall bring you home.
But let’s get to my hut, for the night, and start early, tomorrow.
I have some useful things there and it is warm and safe.
Besides, I’m sure these noble wannabes are looking for you…”

The colourful bird

It was way before dawn and Amelia was sleeping soundly, when Baldur woke Aaron and both ventured to the woods. In fact, Baldur remembered a little something and so, he had Aaron help him to setup some traps. When they woke the girl, they were completely prepared to leave. Baldur shouldered his crossbow and had Aaron carry a stuffed bag.

It was short after dawn and the trio already left the hut behind, when they suddenly heard horns, blowing to a hunt. Baldur gave Aaron a meaningful gaze and a wink, as he led them aside from any paths. As they slowly snug through the undergrowth, he whispered with a chuckle.

“See? Told you… They always do their hunting day on this day of the month. Killing animals just for entertainment… damn aristocrats… But they will have their surprise, this time…”

And indeed, when they reached the rim of the wood, they heard a voice yelling and cursing, a voice Amelia and Aaron knew all too well. From one of the trees, one of the hunters, who split from the group as usual, was hanging upside down with his foot trapped in a sling. When Baldur was stepping closer, the man struggled even more, barking at the him.

“You there! Get me down here at once!”
“Oh my, I caught a colourful idiot…”
“What?! How dare you! If this is your doing, I shall have your head!”
“Hard to imagine, looking at your current situation…”
“You! Do you have any idea who you are talking to?!”
“Edwin Caprarius, Lord of idiots!”

Aaron had come out, stepping next to Baldur with a cheeky grin, while Baldur motioned Amelia, to come out as well. When Edwin saw the two, his eyes widened and his face flushed burning red in anger, while his voice raised by an octave as he yelled at them nearly hysterically, now.

“I see… So this was him, huh?”
“You! Get me down here at once, I say! This is an order! You shall pay! You will regret your escape! You will regret this! I will teach you! Lousy brat! Insolent chit!”
“Better watch your mouth!”

Aaron stared at Edwin, a dagger in hand, as Baldur folded his arms, scowling at the man, but Amelia just shook her head and laid a hand on an arm of each, glancing up to Edwin. She tried to sound calm, yet her voice trembled just slightly.

“Seems, sometimes people get what they deserve. Just leave him there. As Dad would say: He’s not worth the trouble…”
“You are right. Let’s leave the colourful bird to his tree. Shall his men have a good laugh… Let’s go…”

Aaron stared at Edwin for a long moment, before he put the dagger away. Without any further comment, the three just turned and walked away in direction of Pennymill, leaving the hysterically vociferating, struggling, noble wannabe…

Reflections: Wanderings

Amelia was laying in her bed, her gaze drifting around in the darkness. The past days were a lot to take in. She was overwhelmed with joy, being welcomed with so much love and care by her loved ones, happy, to finally be with them again. However, it was also hard to talk about, what she had been through. But like Katharina said, it also helped a bit to talk about it. And Oxi was right… She would go forth stronger… at least, she hoped so. She let out a slight sigh and while she softly ruffled Lil’s fur, who was cuddling beside her, her thoughts went back to her long way home…

“See? If you do it like this, you can dodge much easier…”

Baldur did a swift move with a dagger, motioning Aaron to copy him. Amelia had been glad for the little break. Her feet did hurt from all the walking and her shoes were quite worn out. She watched the two training together, while preparing a soup from some mushrooms and herbs, they had gathered along the way.

Baldur sure knew his way around in the wilderness and could teach them a bunch. And he seemed to enjoy to have someone, he could teach. But not only him… Aaron seemed to enjoy it as well. It had been about a week, since they had met the giant man in the Old Willow Woods. Ever since, the journey had been rather smooth. Baldur was an excellent reader of tracks, so they managed to avoid bandits, stray troops of mercenaries or other trouble, so far.

Within the next day, they had reached Pennymill. Actually, they only wanted to refill their supplies, stay a night in a real bed and depart towards Nubris, the next day. At least, that had been the plan…

But when they entered the tavern, all went another way. There had been a bunch of rough men, divided in two groups: One looking like mercenaries, the others a quite mixed group, giving kind of a shady impression. The atmosphere was tense, as they all were clearly drunk and out for a fight. And yes, when the trio entered, it was like starting signal...

One of the shady guys immediately had grabbed for Amelia’s wrist, trying to pull her over. As a result, his face had a hard encounter with Baldur’s fist.

“Hands off, punk! You are definitely not her type!”

Seconds later, nearly everyone got into a huge tavern brawl – with Baldur right in the centre of attention. While Amelia had tried to take cover, crawling behind the counter, Baldur and Aaron rather seemed to enjoy themselves. She did not remember the details, but at some point, Aaron had grabbed her hand and they made it out, somehow. Later, they sat around a campfire in front of a barn. A local farmer had allowed them to stay. Not quite a bed, but at least something…

“Now, that was fun!”
“And worth it!”

Aaron gave them a cheeky grin, holding up some pouches. Amelia shook her head but couldn’t help to chuckle a bit, as Baldur made Aaron wince a little by patting his shoulder heavily.

“Ha! Not bad, kid!”
“Tomorrow, we can go to the market!”
“But only, if some of your loot goes to the poor owner of the tavern, for the damage.”

A slight chuckle escaped her, as her thoughts slowly faded to sleep…

Bralenar – Turning the tables

Godwin Caprarius rubbed his forehead, staring at the tactical map and some reports. What was supposed to be a quick sack, turned out to be a draining besiegement. It has been months, since his father had sent him out here to take this ostensible small outpost. However, the defence was tight, well-organised and by far too strong for a mere trading post. Whatever was truly behind this, it must be important. What was even more suspicious, was the fact, that their “allies” seemed have a hunch about the secret of this place, however, they did not give away the slightest hint. He stroked his beard pensively. To be honest, he did not understand, why his father did join forces with those people, to begin with. They were obviously suspicious, hiding their origin and their true intentions. He always had an eerie feeling around them, especially, with their mages and priests. Some of his men secretly suspected them to be connected to the Lord of Bones and Blood… He shook his head to get rid of that thought. The old Lord Caprarius had formed an alliance and had given clear orders to him… Who was he to question his father?!

His thoughts were interrupted out of sudden, when one of his men came in. Obviously, Bralenar was getting more reinforcements from the north and for some strange reason, they were literally on his doorstep, already, without getting spotted any sooner. But what was even worse: His so-called allies were about to step back! Those shady, coward bastards! He stepped out with rage, collaring one of their soldiers, who seemed to be full of fear.

“What are you doing?! What is this about?!”
“We promised to support you and we will keep the magical barrier… Bu-But we never expected HER to show up!”
“Her?! What are you talking about?!”
“Kandala Bra Sénar, High Priestess of Bragon! It’s said she burned down a whole castle with a rain of fire, out of the skies! Better don’t risk a direct encounter, Sir!”

Godwin huffed in anger, letting go of the man who quickly ran off. He sought out their leader to hear more about this priestess. He only got said legend confirmed. This Kandala was well-known and feared among them, for more than a thousand years. Whether it was her connection to Brágon or maybe one of the legendary dragons, she was said to be allied with, whenever she interfered with a battle, it is said, there was fire raining from the sky.

Damn it!

He could not risk to lead his men to calamity but if he would just retreat, House Caprarius would lose its face! They would not give up on their plans, but for now, giving in and regroup was the only logical option. Not just because of that priestess, of course. He did not give a damn about superstition! But along with her was vast reinforcement and with his allies retreating, he was simply outnumbered.

There was only one way: Going all out and attack, before they would arrive…

The Battle of Bralenar – Aftermath

Godric Caprarius just stared into thin air, not wincing a bit as the healer tended to his wounds. His thoughts were far off, back on the battlefield. After getting the news of reinforcement of the enemy, he had to take a quick – and dire – decision. Against all warning signs, he went out on a full attack on the outpost, in a swift move, but missing out the magical support that they were granted. Although his men were trained best and fired up, hoping this would end the draining besiegement, they could not hold a stand, for long. The enemy was strong, swift and excellently prepared. As if they had just waited for him, to make this move.

Their leader seemed to be an excellent strategist. That woman… He still could not believe what happened. When the battle was at its peak and it seemed clear, he would lose under probably high loses, she just ceased it, calling her forces to hold. Instead, she had challenged him – a battle one on one! If she would win, they would have to retreat and give up on Bralenar. In case he should win, she would bow before him and give up on the outpost. However, her very presence made clear, she had absolutely no intention to lose. There he was, in a pinch! Duelling a woman?! That was against everything he was raised up with! But on the other hand, turning her down was equal to forfeit. He had no choice but to accept.

He had to admit, she was a formidable fighter, woman or not. But it was too much at stake, to get carried away. He gave his all and so did she. He would never forget that spark in her eyes, that hinted smile, curling on her lips, when their blades had crossed. It had almost been like a dance, both answering the movements of one another, skilled and swift. Under other circumstances, he might even have enjoyed this fight. And he had a feeling, this would not be their last encounter…

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Selenlaya was sitting with a healer, huffing impatiently. How she hated this! It was just a few scratches! Well almost… When Caprarius launched his attack, she thought, the man had lost his senses, after the long time in the heat of the Rough Lands. But her adjutant explained to her, it was obviously out of a pinch, forced on him, due to Albarian culture. He had to act, if he did not want to lose his face. That man…

During the past months, she often admired his strategy. It was almost like playing a party of chess against a worthy opponent. She was sure, he did not really want unnecessary bloodshed, neither did he want to sacrifice his men in a lost cause. So, she had offered him a way out, that would allow him to keep up his pride without losing his face. And she had to admit, she enjoyed it! He was a worthy opponent, indeed. It has been a while since a battle almost felt like dancing. And she was sure, he felt the same.

Under other circumstances, he could have been an interesting man. After all, he managed to bring their duel to a draw! As a result, he and his men had retreated for the time being, but certainly, they would just regroup somewhere. She was sure, they would meet again, and she would be waiting for it…

Reflections: The end of the journey

Amelia was laying on her bed, staring at the ceiling. She just had a nice encounter with Niya and Renar, inviting them on a hot meal. However, the last part of her conversation with Niya still lingered in her mind. Why had she told this child-like elfess so honestly about her heart? And even more important, now, that she reconsidered, she found herself lying to her. She had admitted to be sad about feeling kind of lonely, longing for someone to love and further still struggling with what she just had been through, lately. However, she claimed to be alright. But that was far from truth. She was everything, but fine. Not only was she still haunted by nightmares, but also someone raising his voice in aggression was enough to make her wince or feel nervous. Her gaze wandered to the two bottles, on the table next to her bed. Something to ease anxiety and something against melancholia. She had hold Aswe to swear not to tell anyone. They all sure had worried enough for her!

A bitter smirk appeared on her lips. She, who was supposed to be a light in the dark for others, had to rely on a fake smile, hoping nobody would realize her masquerade. She wasn’t sure if she would still be able to fulfil that task, she still believed was entrusted to her by the goddesses, back then, when she did her leap of faith and her life was magically saved. But she vowed to dedicate her very soul, heart and existence to it, so she would do everything that was necessary. Hesitatingly, she took a tiny sip of the later and laid back again. Slowly, her thoughts drifted away, back to the last part of her journey…

The sun was setting, when the three of them finally reached Nubris. Her shoes were walked down and they just had the rest of their provisions, this morning. The few berries, Baldur was able to find along the way were barely enough for them. They were hungry and tired and at least Amelia was longing for a bath. Luckily, they still had plenty of coins left from Pennymill, so they entered the tavern, which was also the inn, asking for a room. Of course, it would have been too easy, just to rent a room and take a nice, hot bath. In fact, all rooms very taken, already.

But that did not stop Baldur at all. He nodded to the innkeeper and just turned around, leaning at the counter, holding up a pouch full of coins. With a broad grin, he addressed the whole tavern with his deep, warm voice.

“Listen folks!
This pouch is full of silver coins!
And it shall belong to the first who beats me in a contest of arm wrestling!
But you will have to set your room here at stake!
Now, who is in for it?”

Amelia just gasped. Actually, this was all of their money and they were planning to take a ship, by the next day. She opened her mouth, just to close it again, looking like a fish on dry land. It was too late. The challenge was open and Amelia had to trust in Baldur’s decision – and strength. When Baldur saw her gaze, he just winked at her. Aaron just grinned and while everyone was focused on the giant man, he just dived into the crowd, certainly to make sure, they would have money for the ship, no matter the outcome of the challenge. Amelia just shook her head. She was not happy with it, but she couldn’t do anything about it. She couldn’t think of a better option and if she would say anything, she would just cause trouble for all three of them.

A broad-shouldered man with an eyepatch and a scar on his left cheek stood up with a smirk. He was at least taller by a head than Baldur and full of muscles. He spit in his hand, offering it to Baldur.

“I will take you on, braggart!”

Baldur gave a deep, warm laughter, when he shook on it.

“That’s what I wanted to hear! Bring it on!”

Moments later, both men were sitting at a table, ready to start, surrounded by the cheering crowd. Bets were taken and everyone just focused on the two men. Amelia felt uneasy, but she had to admit, she got carried away a bit, as well. It was kind of thrilling to watch! For several minutes, both men did not give in a single nudge, their muscles flexed so hard that they looked like snapping any moment. Both had sweat on their faces, but Baldur was grinning broadly, obviously enjoying it. After some nearly endless moments, the unexpected happened – Baldur flipped it over to the win!

The eyepatch stared at his hand and for a moment, the whole room was silent, and they atmosphere got tense. Amelia could see, Baldur was ready to counter a hit and she felt Aaron, reaching for her hand, ready to drag her out. But then, the other man just began to laugh and the crowd followed. Baldur relaxed and so did she. The man handed over the key, admitting his defeat, under condition, Baldur would invite him on a drink. Baldur snuck the key to her, telling her to rest up and log herself in, until he would follow along with Aaron. Amelia went upstairs, enjoying the long, hot bath, she had been longing for, while Aaron and Baldur were enjoying themselves, getting drunk for good.

The next day, they went to the harbour. Forkmyr River, finally. From here on out, it was easy. They took a ship to Laris and from there on out, it was not far to walk. When Brimshire finally appeared before them, there was nothing, holding her back anymore. She began to run, faster and faster, past the town square, past the town, all the way along the fields, right to the farm. She was yelling for Peter and Keona along the way, falling just around her brother’s neck, nearly blinded by her own tears - tears of joy and relief. She still could feel him holding her tight, like never letting go of her ever again, surprised and confused, but just happy to have her back…

Tears ran down her cheeks at the memory. She had to leave Brimshire far too soon, too fast. Without a chance, to really settle down, first. But it was necessary. House Alethair was still on their move and as if that wasn’t enough, Luke had been able to escape, during the chaos of the faked plague. So, it was no longer safe for her. And besides, Dworin was just glad to have a chance to finally get back to Galmair as well…

She kept tossing and turning. The only short sleep she got, was disrupted by another nightmare. It was in the middle of the night… With a sigh, she got dressed again, whistling for Lil to accompany her. If she wasn’t able to sleep, she could also work, as well…

Lose Ends

The Druid Network

Of course, it had not only been Peter and Keona or Lhira and Nishadaa, who had tried to find clues about Amelia’s fate, when she went missing. Many of her friends tried to get intel, using every connection they got. The Druids of the Eternal Grove were no exception. Looking at it now, no one can deny the irony of the fact, that they have sent off their letters to all the towns of Albar, asking other druids for clues, just the day, when Amelia set foot on Illarion again. Of course, Amelia had been long gone, when they received the messages, however, their answers were spotting some light on the girl’s journey:
Ann-Korr:
A girl, matching Amelia’s description, had been sighted around Zhas 20th, being transferred from a seagoing vessel to a barge, river up.

Pennymill:
In connection with a mass brawl, a young woman, matching her description, was seen with a big guy and a young thief, around Ushos 6th.

Nubris:
A girl like her was seen with a big guy and a young man by many witnesses, around Ushos 11th.
They must have taken a barge in direction of Laris.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Akaranth

Gratorak Bottlebrink was a tiny man, even for a dwarf, who was known for being a grumpy one, yet good at heart. Serving at a Noble House in Akaranth, he often sought quarrels with other servants, however, those who knew him were aware, he never meant it on ill will. He had the role of a butler, among other stuff, so he was always hearing and seeing many things. When the letter of his old friend Sammy Goldlieb reached him, he was quite surprised. It had been quite a while since their last contact. Obviously, Sammy was looking for someone; a girl named Amelia, a young medico who got abducted and was supposed the be sold as a slave and ended somewhere in Albar. Well, Albar was a large realm, however, he remembered a story he overheard, when the healer of Akaranth was seeing for the old Lady of the House. So, he was sending a letter to Sammy.

To my old friend Sammy,

I was surprised to hear from you, even more on such a matter. Luckily, I might be able to help. I came to hear a story about a girl, that might be your friend, the young medico. Actually, the healer here in Akaranth is a stubborn, proud, old man, belittling everyone, younger than him. However, when he was here recently, he was pretty worked up, not to say raging about a girl that claimed to be a medico. I don’t have to tell you about stubborn, old Albarians, right? However, something like that is rather out of the ordinary, around here. I heard she had fled from house Caprarius, by now. The old Lord Caprarius blamed his wife, Lady Anabel, for it and abandoned her. However, it seems she made it out with her child, the young Lord Baldan. Everyone is searching for them. Sadly, I can’t tell you anything else. Maybe it is time to search for another house to serve.

Would be nice if your next letter wouldn’t take a year, again.

~ Gratorak

PS.: That stupid bird came back with the letter, so this one might be late.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Anabel and Baldan

It had been quite a while, since Anabel was able to flee from the grasp of her husband, the old Lord Caprarius. Not only did he abandon her, declaring her no longer being his wife and stripped her from her titles, he also wanted to take Baldan away from her. She could have taken anything but that, so she dared to flee in the protection of the night, the same way, she helped that girl and boy to flee, back at that fateful night. Even if she had lost everything, she did not regret helping them. After all, this Amelia had saved the life of her beloved son. Somehow they made it downstream, to Ann-Korr. Living a normal, peasant life was hard on her and she often struggled, being shunned by many as she could barely hide her noble background. However, she met a grumpy dwarf who was serving a rich, Salkamarian trader. For some strange reason, her name and Baldan seemed to ring a bell with him and he introduced them to his master. It was the best, that ever happened to her. Frederic Clearwater was a kind and gentle man and he was more than willing to help, after a short talk with his servant. He took them along with his ship towards Laris. During their journey, he quickly became best friends with Baldan and not only that. Over time, Anabel had to admit, she felt attracted to him and soon, they came closer…

Seclusion II

There she was, kneeling in front of the beautiful little wooden shrine, Inara had made for her as a gift to her birthday. On the offering plate, there was a bouquet made from 24 firnis flowers, one for each year of her life. Amelia took a deep breath. It had not been an easy decision to go into seclusion again. But to her, it felt like the only way to overcome her pain and fears, the inner walls, that seemed to hold her back, hindering her to find back to her true self. When she told her friends and family, they understood and supported her decision. Inara was the only one with a key to her locked door and would be her anchor to the outer world, this time, looking after her, in case, something went wrong, while Claire would take care for Lil, so she would not have to worry. However, she could see it clearly in their eyes, how much they all were worrying for her.

She smoothed the skirt of the simple, yet elegant, pure white dress. With the elegantly upbraided hair, with all the flowers within, she looked nearly like a bride. All according to the strict rules of seclusion prayers, like she was taught since she had been a little girl, including the strict diet, only containing dry bread, fruits, water and a little bit of milk. Her gaze was fixed on the beautiful portrait of Sirani on the back wall of the little shrine, which was shimmering in in the soft glow or the fire crystals, embedded in the delicately carved trees, flanking the back portrait from both sides. Her voice was a mere whisper, when she began to speak and soon, tears started to run down her cheeks, without her even noticing.

“Oh, Sirani, goddess of love and joy, harbinger of peace, protector of hearts, my Lady!
Here I come before you as your servant, having not much more to offer than my very self, a shattered heart and soul, begging you for mercy.
I lost my path, oh goddess! I feel like I am about to lose my very self! I try so hard to be strong! I try so hard to shine, like I vowed to you and your sisters! But I feel so little, so weak, so helpless! I can’t even really name it, nor can I say why. It feels like there’s a darkness within me, a fear, a pain that lays on my chest like a heavy weight, taking away the very air to breath. I feel like running from that darkness but I’m not able to escape.
Oh please, my Lady Sirani!
Have mercy on me!
Guide me back to my light, so I can shine for others, again!
I beg you!
Help me!”

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

When she opened her eyes, everything felt cold as ice. She couldn’t move and even worse, she could not breath! Panicking, she tried to orientate. She was under water! She tried to force herself up to the surface but she was tied with chains, wrapped around her body. No! It wasn’t just chains! Each link seemed to be made out of her fears and the more she was panicking, the tighter it got around her body, while the pain within her heart became a weight, pulling her down without mercy. Slowly, she sank deeper and deeper, drowning in cold darkness as she saw her last breath, leaving her towards the surface…

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Her very heartbeat felt like a hammer in her chest. She was catching for breath, coughing, her throat felt coarse, like if she had been screaming for hours and her eyes were burning from try tears. The room was completely dark, except for the soft glow, that was emitted from the little wooden shrine. The firnis flowers on the offering plate were gone, but some, that had fallen to the ground, were withered.

How long had it been??

When she got on her feet, Amelia realized how weak she actually was. She staggered to the cold bathtub and washed off the cold sweat from her face, before she forced herself on some fruits and water, at least. Still shivering from deep within, she kneeled down again and as soon as she dared to close her eyes, she lost consciousness…

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

This time, she found herself on a vast plane, a meadow, reaching the horizon in every direction. The sweet scent of thousands of flowers engulfed her, while she was surrounded by countless butterflies, shimmering and glittering in all colours. A warm breeze was playing with some lose strands of her hair and the golden sunlight on her skin felt like a gentle embrace. From afar, she heard a gentle whisper, echoing softly in her head.

“Have you forgotten?”

Then, all of a sudden, the ground beneath her cracked and shattered like glass. It felt like she was falling endlessly until her chest began to feel tight. From one moment to another, she found herself chained under water again. When looking to the surface, she saw a light, far away, drifting away further and further, as the weight on her heart again started to pull her down into the depth of darkness. When she looked down to see what was pulling on her, she saw a shadowy figure, like a shadow demon with changing faces.

Valherian.
Bidukan.
Luke.
Edwin Caprarius.

And along with them came the pain.
The horror and fear, Valherian brought to her life.
The pain of a heart, shattered to a thousand pieces, fearing to never find love again.
The feeling of being lost, of losing everything and everyone dear to her, that felt like choking.
The painful beatings, the helplessness.
Their voices were echoing as one, bizarre and distorted, giving her pain and doubts a voice, screaming in her head.

“There’s nothing you can do!”
“You are no light!”
“It’s all your fault!”
“You are weak!”
“You are nothing!”

Slowly, her resistance faded away. But the moment, she was ready to give in and drown in the cold darkness again, she heard that gentle voice again, this time calling for her.

“Remember!”

Suddenly, she felt like many hands were reaching out for her from above the surface and she heard gentle, familiar voices.

“That’s just so you. Making friends in the darkest moments.”
“You are so fluffy. That’s what makes you special.”
“Nothing of this was your fault!”
“Thanks for just being you, Sis!”
“I wish I had your gentleness…”
“Don’t be too hard on yourself!”
“I’m proud of you!”
“Thank you for making me smile again!”
“Shine on!”

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Again, she had to catch for breath, trying to calm her beating heart, when she woke from what felt like a condition of trance. Tears were still running down her cheeks, however, this time, there was a warm feeling within her heart, like a spark of light, tiny, but persistent. Still her whole body was yearning for rest and so, she crawled onto the bed, just for a little while. Well, that was the plan, but she fell into a deep, dreamless sleep right away, not even noticing, Inara came in, covering her with a blanket and replenished her food, even leaving some fresh finis flowers for her. Before she left, Inara placed two cookies on the offering plate, pleading to Sirani to help and protect Amelia on her path, out of her crises.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

It was impossible to say, how much time had passed, since Amelia had locked herself into her room, begging for guidance and trying to find back to her path. It felt like hours, days, weeks, ages, all at once. Again and again she had meditated on her thoughts and visions, had cried for hours, with her tears feeling like detoxing her heart, or was sunken in prayers, her mind drifting away.

Again, she found herself sitting on the vast meadow plain. The warm feeling that engulfed her there was like a balm for her chaotic mind and heart. And then again, as so often before, the ground beneath her shattered like glass and she was falling, being chained under water again. She felt so tired from fighting over and over… Why was this always repeating? Why did she have to go through this again and again? What kind of torture was this?? Maybe she was just too weak to escape the darkness?

“Peter… Oxi… Inara… Claire… Yridia… I’m sorry…

My Lady Sirani… Oldra… Findari… Tanora…
I was… the wrong one…”

Hot tears were running down her cheeks as she was kneeling in front of the little shrine in a kind of trance. Before her eyes, the tiny light above the surface started to vanish, as she was ready to give up, not even noticing, the weight, that was pulling her down had gotten lighter and lighter…

Then suddenly, she was floating in mid-air, looking down on herself, standing on the bridge in that faithful night, when Valherian had abducted and tied her.

“Have you forgotten?
Remember!
Remember your vow!
Remember your fate!
You are stronger than you know!
And… you are not alone…”

There it was again, that gentle warm voice, echoing in her head… no, in her heart! She saw herself, yelling her eternal vow to the storm:

If the gods still would have use for her, still had a task for her, she would do all, giving her entire self and life to serve that task, ready to accept, whatever fate awaits her.

All of sudden, it was her herself standing on that bridge, and when she took the leap of faith, the scene blurred and she was under water again. But this time, the weight, that was pulling her down had become lighter with every hand that was reaching for her from above.
Pictures began to arise in her heart. The wonderful birthday party, when they all made her the cookie princess… dancing on the tables with Inara, turned into halflings… all those wonderful little moments with Claire until she became one of her best friends, today… All the long, late night talks with Oxi… All the laughing and joking with Peter, playing hide and seek in the fields, when she was still a little girl… Yridia, Aly, Aswe, Cynthia, Sammy and so many more… How everyone of them just hugged her when she made it back, from her odyssey! The happiness and relief in their eyes, holding her like never letting go of her ever again.

For the first time, she reached out for their hands, the chains were falling, sinking down into the darkness. The moment she breached the surface, she was suddenly standing in front of a mirror, realising, the chains and the weight that was pulling on her, had all been her very self. But instead of turning away, she reached out for her reflection in the mirror, pulling it out from behind the glass and embracing it. Her pain, her fears, they were not gone. Instead, she accepted them to be part of her…

Again, the scene changed and she was standing on the meadow plane again, seeing a light in the dark. She remembered. It was a vision once given to her, during a festival of gratitude. And for a last time, she heard the gentle whisper.

“Have faith in yourself…”

Then she finally woke, calm and serene, with a gentle warmth in her heart…

Letter to Peter

Amelia was sitting in her room, putting the last one of the parchments, that where piling on her desk, aside. Paper work for the crest… Tired, she stretched her arms, before reaching down to ruffle Lil’s fur, who was lying next to her chair, waiting for her to be done with her work.

“Just one more thing…”

The dog tilted her head, looking at her impatiently, making Amelia chuckle as she reached for another parchment. She didn’t have heard from Brimshire, since her return and knowing about the situation with House Alethair, she was pretty worried. It was way about time to write home…

My beloved brother,

I’m sorry, it took me so long to write. Things were kind of busy here. However, I’m really worried, not to have heard from you ever since I left Brimshire in a hurry and way to soon. How is Keona? She should have given birth by now… Is everything alright? I hope, everything went well and she and the child are healthy! How’s the situation in Brimshire? I hope, it still stays quiet and Alethair did not take up their besiegement again? I’m so worried for you all!

Well, there was a lot going on here since I returned to Galmair. But one thing after another. Can you believe it? They organized a surprising birthday party for me! Not just a party, it was… well, pretty special. They crowned me the cookie princess and yes, I got a real golden crown from Claire as a present, with golden cookies in place of jewels on it. She really has become a great fine smith! Every guest was playing role of a member of my “court” – opposite to their skills and personality. Claire was made the jester and Inara the cook, for example. It was really funny! Luckily, Inara didn’t cook for real, though… I was even able to make Oxi dance with me! And as if this wonderful party wasn’t enough, they all gave me such wonderful presents, like that crown from Claire, or a beautiful little wooden offering shrine of Lady Sirani from Inara, a gorgeous hairpin with a silken firnis flower from Yridia and much more. But you know, it was way more than a birthday party. To me, it felt like they were all welcoming me back home that way. I was really happy, that day.

But to be honest, the things that I had gone through just didn’t let me go. I could not find peace and was tormented by nightmares and dark feelings, ever so often. First, I was hoping it would go away over time, but it didn’t. I tried to hide it. Silly as I was, I felt guilty for feeling that way. I thought, I would have to be happy, as I was back home safely and everything was over. But you know me. I was never good at hiding my feelings for a long time, so I got caught pretty soon. I feel ashamed about it, but I must confess, I’ve lost my path for a short time. So, I did the only thing that felt right to do and eventually went to seclusion to seek guidance from my goddess. What should I say? It took me over a month in prayers, without even realising it, but my Lady Sirani had mercy on me, reminding me on my vow, my task, my path. Only she may know if it was just dreams or real visions, but I’m sure to have heard her soft voice, right within my heart. In the end, I went out of it with clarity and peace at heart. I will keep my vow and do my best to shine as a light in her name. After this, I’m considering to become a priestess myself one day, once more. What do you think?

Well, there are other things that need to be done, before. Things like Letma. There were a lot of military training units about tactics and I took part as well. Even in a field drill when we attacked the supply routes for Letma, directly. Part of the tactical training was especially, how to protect the field medico. I know, you won’t be pleased to read this, but I am a medico, after all. And since the druids don’t go to the battlefield at all, it’s only Aswe and me who are there to act in the field. I would lie, to say I’m not afraid. But this is part of my duty and I’m convinced to do it. If I’m not convinced of my path, what kind of a fake light would I be? Besides, we need medicos in the field or all would be futile to begin with. It’s our duty to keep everyone well and alive. I hope you can understand.

That said, it’s time for something nice again. As you know Nargùn is one of the patrons of Galmair, so I organized a little gambling night to honour him. What should I say? He seemed to be pleased with the idea, since I won several times. Just poor Aly and Inara really had bad luck but everyone was enjoying themselves pretty much and that was the goal after all.

I really miss you, brother! My prayers and thoughts will be with you, Keona and the little one and with my beloved home. May the gods protect you in the dark days ahead.

Love,
~ Ami

Just when she opened the window to send off the dove, there was another surprise. Taras, her long missed sparrow hawk was just landing there. Happily, she caressed the colourful bird, attaching the letter to him.

“Where have you been so long, my little friend?”

As if answering her question, Taras flew off and along with him, another sparrow hawk was rising to the skies. She smiled to herself. So, he had found himself a pride, hm? She whistled lowly, calling Lil to accompany her, as she took the pile of parchments to deliver it to the crest, before visiting Oxi, Era and the kids. She had promised to come over for dinner and was sure, they would be waiting already…

Peter had a hand on the cradle and some papers and letters in front of him, when Keona entered with a frown.
Immediately a smile lit up the face of the beautiful elfess.
Peter put a finger on his lips, the little one must have finally fallen asleep.
Keona scurried to him, gave him a kiss and a tender look was exchanged between the couple.
Then she took a quick look at the cradle and nodded, pointing to her armor and the bedroom.
Peter returned the smile and then switched his attention to the correspondence in front of him.
One letter was Amelia's and the other two were addressed to her. He already folded one and put it aside.
It was short and at the thought of the little misinformations it contained made Peter grin.
If they should intercept it - it wouldn't do them any good.
The second - longer letter - Peter read through again.
Beloved sister,

it was good to hear from you - and that the letter arrived.
The besiegers have retreated. But they' re still out there somewhere.
There are signs that they are intercepting letters, stopping traders to and from Brimshire, some people have disappeared.
We assume that your kidnapper - that son of a bitch - has made his way to House Alethair and thus our ruse has blown.

Don't worry too much Amelia - we are prepared for it.
Keona magically seals her letters - no one but the recipient can read them, or they'll burn the hell out of their fingers as the letters burst into flames.
Reinforcements from Ar-Sikar have also arrived, not much, but enough to survive Mas.
Among them Phylis, a young scout who uses desert foxes as messengers.
I don't think anyone gets the idea that these little animals spread information.

But now for the wonderful news - our son has been born in good health - Kai Nyvorlas Narsir Rotholz!
Keona is well and just nervous like a predator that doesn't get any prey. Which is no wonder because of the situation.
Oh Ami, he is so handsome and already has the steel-blue eyes of his mother, and it seems the stubbornness of me.
When he wants something he just starts screaming until we give in.

Now to you beloved sister = It is good that you have made contact with your goddess.
They are there for us, show us the way and guide us on the right paths.
I hope you are a little better now and you have also processed the trauma a bit.

Surely I am not exactly reassured when I read that you once again want to be directly on the front line.
I would wish for more self-restraint on your part - but saying that is like carrying water to mills - it fizzles out anyway.
You will do what you are meant to do, and you will do it well, I know that.
And don't become a player just because Nargun once gave you his favor. He is deceitful and unpredictable !

But our little one has just woken up, Keona is with Lia at the ramparts for an inspection.
It is important that they are completely intact before Mas.
So time for a little meal for the little hero for whom the world anyway only consists of eating, sleeping and ... well you know....

Please be careful at Mas and when approaching the dark mountain.
Keona and Lia send warm greetings.

Much love - your brother
~Peter~

As time goes by…

Brimshire

It has been more than a year now, since House Alethair made its move and tried to besiege Brimshire… and had been disgracefully tricked by its people. Ever since, the roads were blocked, traders stopped and people vanished, as soon as they went too far from town, carelessly. All was disguised as robbery and theft, but the people of Brimshire knew better. It was pure tactics to desiccate the town…. and slowly, the effect could no longer be denied. Food was not the main problem, as long as the fields and farms were guarded constantly, so they wouldn’t vanish in flames. But it had become more and more difficult to get other materials, goods and medicine.

By now, it was an open secret that Luke had made it to House Alethair and served them as a scout and informant. He was even bold enough to accompany Alethair’s messenger, when the Lord generously offered to “protect the town” from the “villains in the outskirts”, given Brimshire would finally accept his authority.

The people of Brimshire still held up their resolve. Ever since the people from Ar-Sikar had become a real part of the town, people’s minds had changed – at least with most of them. While still holding up their traditions and laws, they grew even stronger in their unique identity and becoming some Lord’s property again, was no longer an option. However, the shadow of the situation was covering the place like a thick blanket, slowly choking the moral. Lately, some even left and went to surrender and serve House Alethair out of plain resignation – or fear...

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Bralenar

While the situation in Brimshire grew more and more dire, the situation on the outpost of Bralenar was still stuck. Well, at least on the outside. True, the mana lines were still distorted and thus, the portal at Bralenar, which was the direct connection to As-Sikar in this region still didn’t work. However, deep down in a cave the mages of Ar-Sikar secretly managed to establish a temporary workaround. But the process came with high costs of mana and ten high-ranked mages were needed to establish the connection, each time. Thus, it was only used for the most important causes.

Godric Caprarius had taken position south of Bralenar, near Erin River, while Selenlaya still kept holding the outpost – not at last to distract the enemy from the cave portal. And so they kept watching each other furtively – like two lions, both waiting for the other to make the next move…

Reflections – Changing and Growing

With a pleased nod, Amelia glanced over the parchment in her hands one last time, before putting it aside. The plans for the orphan’s classroom. A room which would be a shelter, a classroom and a place to treat the children of Ronagan in their familiar and save surroundings, possible thanks to the proceeds of the beneficial auction, which had been such a huge success. Amelia was happy. This project meant much to her and it would help many of them, hopefully give them a better future. And the best was: there was still enough left, to cover the needs of the poorest, with the help of the priesthood of Ronagan.

Tired, she stretched and ruffled Lil’s fur, as she was laying down on her bed. Soon, there would be the next military drill against Letma. The thought made her shudder, as the memory of Hammerfall returned to her. Was she really ready for this? Ready for the ugly face of war?
She shook her head to get rid of the thought. She simply had to be! It was the path she had chosen, as a medico, and as the light, she had vowed to be! Suddenly, Yridia’s words came back to her:

“If you really want to do this, you need to harden, Amelia.”

Yes, that was right… She had to stay calm, no matter the cruelties, she might face. And she was well aware by now, that she could not save everyone, no matter how hard she might try. Again, an advice once given, came back to her. This time, given a priest, when she had been to a medical lecture in Salkamar, recently:

“There are those out there, who engulfed their hearts in darkness, giving their very souls away. Those are beyond salvation, no matter, how hard we try.”

That was sadly true, she had to admit to herself. She had seen it in the eyes of the dwarfs in Hammerfall. Their resolve was as firm and deep as her own. There was no way, she could bring them to turn back and think over, was it? Katharina had probably been right with her warning:

“Imagine what they would do to you, should they get the chance…”

True... However, she would not stop her way of second chances. At least for those, who seek them. Even, if that could mean, to take a risk, at times. People are able to change, to grow! Aswe and Azure were best proof for that! And so, maybe it was her time to grow now? Without changing who she was? Was that even possible?

Sure, her resolve was clear. She would keep her vow and she was convinced, the best next step to do so, was to finally become a priestess herself, once Letma was defeated. Then again, was she even worthy? Or was it just a mere, selfish wish?

This time, Oxi’s words were ringing in her head again, as he was giving her comfort, when she broke down after Hammerfall:

“She would be proud of you. And so am I…”

Yes, she would be ready.
For the sake of her friends, her family…
and all those who relied on her!

A family trip

It was a cloudy morning in the beginning of Chos in the year 66, when Amelia was boarding ship along with with Teilra, Branwen, Anthonya and Kyros. When Oxi asked her to accompany the kids to his parents, so they could visit their grandparents and they on the other side - would finally get to know her, no one expected this trip to last even longer than 25 months… Along with them was Dworin, as always when Amelia left for a journey, and as always, he was not quite happy to aboard a ship, mumbling something about rather going to fight an army of drow than taking a ship, guarding a bag of flees. The so called bag of flees mainly referred to Amelia and the girls, as he was pretty good with Kyros. Well, in one way, he had his hands full, during the journey, to keep those seamen away from the grown girls… But other than that, the journey was rather quiet. Yet, Amelia kept pondering, if this was really just a family trip or if there was more behind it, given the timing with Mas drawing near and all the preparations against Letma. Did Oxi maybe intend to get her and the kids out of the way and thus, to safety? Or was it his way to keep her away from everything, since he knew her resolve to go to battlefield as a medico? She was quite aware he was not happy about it – proud of her but certainly not happy.

When they arrived at Sor-Ann-Arah, they took a boat upstream Annryn River up to Kan-Ann-Irulaith. There, Oxi’s younger brother Sadi was expected to fetch them up but when they arrived, there seemed nobody waiting for them. They decided to wait at the peer and soon, there was something going on in the harbour tavern nearby. A man stumbled out of the door, with his hands held high, followed by a broad-shouldered guy, with quite an angry look on his face.

“Easy there… I won that game of dices fair ‘n square” , the man said quietly, bringing some distance between himself and the tall guy and flipping a silver coin to him. “See, I invite you on a drink, aye? You don’t want everyone to say you are a bad loser, do you? Luck will be on your side, next time.” The broad-shouldered guy caught the coin and grumbled, but then took a breath and turned around, vanishing back into the tavern.

“Phew, that was close” , the man chuckled and looked around. The resemblance to Oxi was undeniable. “Well, they should be arriving any moment, now…”
“We already did, uncle!” , Anthonya called over and waved.
“Anthonya? Is that you? Oh boy, you’ve grown into a beauty! But stop calling me uncle or I start to feel old!”
He came over with a chuckle and hugged the kids, one after another, before he stopped in front of Amelia, giving her a close look and a friendly, warm smile.
“And you must be Amelia, right? Already heard about you. I’m Sadi. Welcome to our steadily growing family.” He gave her a wink and offered her a hug, which she returned, though a little tentatively. He nudged Teilra slightly, whispering to her behind a hand but loud enough to make sure, Amelia would hear it. “She’s a shy one, isn’t she?”
“Only with men” , the girl responded dryly.
Amelia blushed instantly but Sadi just padded her shoulder and gave her a warm chuckle.
“And who’s the dwarf?”
“I’m Dworin. I’m here to guard this bag of flees, especially her.” , the dwarf grumbled, pointing at Amelia as he shouldered his axe.
“Uhhh… A grumpy one, aren’t you?” , Sadi grinned, “Well then, let’s go, we still have quite a way ahead of us.”

And he was right. All in all, they needed another 4 days following along Ann-River to the Khal-Tiramon Mountains, passing several small villages on their way up, which became rarer, the higher they got. Sadi was actually a fun guy to be with, knowing a lot of funny stories to tell along the way and obviously, he was well known around they villages. At late evening of the fourth day, they finally left behind they mountain pass. It was freezing cold, way colder than in Galmair, so they all were more than glad to see the inviting light in the windows of the lone chalet…

Rumbling Mountains

Amelia was lying in bed, her gaze was caught by the dancing shadows caused by the fireplace. Anthonya was fast asleep, right next to her, constantly keeping to steel the blanket they shared. Amelia chuckled as the girl mumbled something in her sleep, then her thoughts travelled back to their arrival. When they entered the house, Amelia was instantly hugged by an elderly woman and overwhelmed by her warm and heartfelt greetings.

“You must be Amelia!
Welcome to the family, dear!
I’m Daria but you can call me grandma…
Let me have a look at you… my, what a beauty!”

“Mother, let the girl breath…”, said a man, who could have been Oxi, just looking a tad older, with a chuckle.
“You let her barely come in.”
“Oh, I’m sorry!” The grey-haired woman stepped back and gave a warm chuckle, before aiming her attention to Kyros and the girls now, hugging each one tight and dearly.
The man who just spoke offered Amelia a warm smile and a handshake. “I’m Abrasha, Oxiana’s elder brother and this…”, he motioned to the woman next to him, who offered Ami a warm smile, “…is Anisa, my wife.” Amelia offered both a warm smile, as an elderly man with broad shoulders stepped up to her, his hands – like Abrasha’s – were clearly those of a hardworking man. He raised a brow as he stroked over his grey, well-trimmed beard, before he addressed her with a deep, warm voice. “That's the young ones. Always pushing first, instead of letting the man of the house great the guests, first. Now, let me have a look at you, young lady.” He eyed her for a moment, while Abrasha playfully rolled his eyes at his words. Then, the old man’s lips curled into a grin at first, turning into a warm smile instantly, as he offered her a hug.
“Be welcome, my dear!”

All in all it had been and evening of warm welcoming, laughter and telling stories. Daria was overly happy to see how the girls have grown and Kyros had Rashaun, Oxi’s father, tell him one story after another. And of course, they had to tell them everything about their life in Galmair, Oxi, Era and of course, little Ejder…

Her thoughts got interrupted as she heard Abrasha, going through the house, checking all windows to be shut tight and all doors to be locked, again. It was his third round. No wonder. It was the night before Mas and it was nearly midnight. While everyone pretended to be calm, mainly for the sake of the young ones, Amelia was well aware of the overall tension. She was no exception. They were all alone, up here. It was too cold for birds, to send a message for help and even if it was possible, the pass was impossible to cross during the winter, which could last until summer, during hard years. On the other hand, that also meant, there were only seldom undead to be seen and monsters were rather rare, either. Nevertheless, that was no reason to let your guard down. Amelia got up to see if she could find another blanket somewhere. The silence within the house was only interrupted by the crackling fire and suddenly, it gained an eerie atmosphere. Amelia took a deep breath, shaking her head to get rid of the thought but then, suddenly, the was a loud rumbling outside, coming right from the family’s mine close by...

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Mas was over and besides said strange rumbling, it stayed quiet. However, no one dared to leave the house before the days of blood were over and so, it was Abrasha who discovered the strange cave which had opened within the mine and now, here they were, Rashaun, Abrasha, Anisa, Sadi and Amelia, staring at the dark entrance, which Abrasha and Sadi swore had not been there before Mas.
“Maybe this is a sign of the gods?” , Abrasha pondered aloud.
“The mine is dying and this could be a new chance to find ores. It looks solid, too…”
“A sign of the gods?” Anisa shook her head, grabbing for Abrasha’s arm.
“If so… You should not go digging in there. It appeared during Mas, after all!”
Amelia peeked into the cave, chewing on her lower lip. The light of the torch indeed barely pierced the darkness. “I got a strange feeling about this… Something’s off with it…”
“We should not discuss this out here…”

Rashaun was right and so, they all went back in and for some reason, the matter was not further discussed, until another night, the rumbling occurred again… and then again… and again…

“I tell you, this is a curse of Mas!” , Anisa nearly dropped the plate she was washing as she cleaned the kitchen together with Amelia. Amelia pondered. Yes, true, she still had this strange feeling about the cave but not in a way like a bad foreshadowing.
“I’m not so sure. I mean, sure, there is clearly something strange going on but other than some rumbling and the appearance of the cave, nothing happened, right? There is something to it, of that I’m certain… but I’m not sure if HE is behind it… maybe we should explore it… carefully? Oh, I don’t know either…”
“Maybe Amelia has a point there…”, Abrasha admitted, folding his arms, as he was sitting at the table with Rashaun, Daria, Sadi and grumpy Dworin.
“No please, Abrasha, don’t go in there again!”
“Oh Anisa! Come on, stop scaring the kids! You see ghosts around every corner. When we last saw it, it was just a cave…. Nothing in there…”, Sadi teased her. “I will go and check it out, then.”
“In that case, my axe shall be with you” , Dworin grumbled, emptying a mug of beer, old Rashaun had been sparing for special guests.
“I began to feel bored, anyway.”
“Then it is settled” , Rashaun nodded, stroking over his beard.
“Tomorrow, the two of you shall go and explore that cave. But be careful and don’t take unnecessary risks…”

Self-Doubt

Mas was over, finally. But although she was deadly tired, Amelia couldn’t really find much rest. She carefully peeled herself out of the blanket, trying not to wake anyone. She had stayed at the villa, sharing a provisional night camp made from blankets and pillows, for Aly had collapsed, once the fight was over, after denying any help. This silly, stubborn woman! Sure, she had responsibility, but this time, she nearly pushed it too far! What good would she do, ending in a grave?? Amelia went over to the fireplace to check on her, but it seemed she was sleeping save and sound, for now. There was no doubt, she would suffer splitting headaches, once she would wake. However, Amelia was pretty sure, Aly would not draw a lesson from it.

She grabbed her stuff and snuck out. Dawn was breaking, but the air was still cool. Wrapped in her cloak, she clenched her fingers around the strap of her medico bag hanging over her shoulder. She walked towards the gates but when she passed serpent tower, she froze for a moment, staring up – and it all came back. The eerie, cold and angry voice of which Inara insisted it had been Prea… the cursed knights that rose on her command… the undead dragons… and along with them, the sense of terror… the feeling of being helpless…useless. She had prayed with all her heart… because that was all she could do. But of course… it had no effect at all.

She took a breath and shook her head, trying to get rid of the thought. Back in Galmair, she silently made her way to the hospital to check on Clairette and Mirai who had been taken down by the cursed knights, instantly. Both seemed to be asleep – or pretended to be? She left again and went up to her room, were she simply dropped her bag on the ground and herself on the bed, burying her face into Lil’s fur. Was this all she could do? Tending to the wounded – given they would even let her?

She felt small, weak and… disillusioned. She had been sure to have a task; given by the gods the day she was miraculously saved. To be a light in the dark. But now, she wasn’t sure anymore, even doubting herself… Maybe this was all out of the pathetic wish to have some sense to her life? Or even worse… plain hubris? Or was she even losing her mind when she had been sure to experience Sirani’s guidance? A light in the dark… What a joke… When times were darkest, there had been nothing she could do. Silent tears run down her cheeks. A part of her wished, she was still with Oxi’s family in the mountains, trapped behind the mountain pass… far away from everything…

((The next phew posts will deal with some things that happened during the past RL months, since I was not able to continue, until I’m able to close the gap to actual events.))

Old Legends

With a tired smile, Amelia put her cloak to the hook at the door of her room and moments later, she would find herself under her cozy, warm blanket, while Lil layed on the bed at her feet. She had a nice evening with Oxi and Claire in the kitchen, telling them about her adventures in the mountains with Oxi’s family. Again, her thoughts travelled back…

The next morning, Sadi and Dworin went to check out the cave and despite Anisa begging him not to go, Abrasha decided to go with them as well. Now, all they could do was waiting…. Anisa kept walking up and down in the kitchen like a tense mountain lion.
“What if there are undead in there… or demons… or worse!
I tell you, this was a bad idea! We should just block the entrance and never go there again!”

“And stop mining, or what?”, Rashaun responded, trying to sound calm, but the hint of tension in his voice gave away his own worry.
“Calm down, Anisa. We don’t know how deep this cave goes or if there is a maze of tunnels.
It could just take them some time to explore, especially if they stay careful. And this Dworin actually looks like a capable fighter, so they are in good hands.”

“Yes, they are. This axe of his is certainly not for decoration and Dad didn’t choose him as my guard for no reason. I’m sure they will be fine.”, Amelia responded, trying to sound confident and calm. She offered Anisa a warm smile and a cup of tea. Anisa sighed but took the cup of tea, clenching her fingers around it, and finally took a seat.

After just two hours that felt like an eternity, the trio finally returned safe and sound, just covered in dust. Anisa instantly rushed to them to give Abrasha a tight hug in a sigh of relief.
“Now, now. I was away for a few hours”, the man chuckled softly, returning a gentle hug.
“So, what did you find?”, Rashaun asked quietly, offering them to take a seat.
“Within the cave, a long tunnel has opened, straight and with incredibly smooth walls.”, Sadi began to report with quite some excitement, gesturing wildly.
“It runs quite deep into the mountain and at its end, there was a huge chamber. And you won’t believe what we found there, Dad!”
Rashaun arched a brow, giving his youngest a questioning gaze with a mixture of impatience and amusement.
“Don’t make it so thrilling. What was it?”
Before Sadi could answer, Abrasha took over, continuing in a calm manner, but his voice told of a still lingering astonishment and reverence alike.
“It’s the old legend, father!
We found the chamber of the legend.
When we entered, the torches ignited themselves.
It is exactly as the legend says.
There is a statue of a snow leopard, alongside a young man, with a wandering staff, once holding a glowing crystal of pure earth, both seeming to watch over a shrine of Ushara.
However, the statue is damaged, so the leopard is no longer walking alongside the man but lying on the ground and the wooden walking staff seems to have rotten and the crystal of pure earth is just lying on the ground. Also, the altar of the shrine was devastated.”

Daria’s eyes just widened as she listened, while Anisa clapped her mouth, her eyes showing a mixture of fear and awe. Rashaun just nodded slowly, stroking his beard.
“Unbelievable. I always believed in it but I would have never expected to get a chance to actually see it…”
“What legend are we talking about?” , Amelia asked curiously.
“It’s a very old story, passed down from generation to generation in all villages around these mountains.
I shall tell you as my father, your grandfather, told it to me.”
, Rashaun responded calmly.
Teilra, Branwen, Anthonya and Kyros gathered on the ground to listen to the story with curiosity as well, and as Rashaun began to speak again, his voice was filled with reverence.

“Generation ago, there was a vast mining village in these mountains, right beyond the pass, as it was said the ground holds vast treasures and so people dug mines everywhere and within their greed, they destroyed the land, its nature and soon, even the animals began to vanish. Back then, a young man, whose name is long forgotten, claimed to have visions, granted by Ushara, warning the people to stop on their destructive path, but people just laughed at him, blinded by their greed. And so, the catastrophe was inevitable: One night, the mountain began to shake and rumble and the very ground opened, swallowing most of the houses.
People were shocked and grieving and filled with fear and regret. In their despair, they addressed the young man, asking him what to do to ease the anger of the goddess. The man prayed with all his heart and had another vision, leading the way over the pass and to a cave that was lying deep within the mountain. And so, he went there with the villagers, alongside him, his beloved fiancée. When they came to the cave, they began to build a shrine for Ushara within there, full of regret. When they finished, they stayed during the night, praying and hoping for a sign of the goddess’s forgiveness.
Eventually, the villagers fell asleep, all sharing the same dream with a soft voice telling them, that everything comes with a price and that her chosen guardians shall watch over these mountains for all eternity.
When the villagers awoke, the young man had turned into a statue, with a sparkling crystal of pure earth embedded in his wandering staff, and alongside him was a female snow leopard, wearing the necklace he once had given to his fiancée. However, the man’s face did not show any sign of fear or grieve, but a serene and happy smile, his hand gently touching the leopard’s head. When the villagers left the cave, the tunnel collapsed behind them and the next day, it all had turned into solid rock, as if there had never been a cave. However, it is said, that sometimes one might see a young man and a snow leopard with a necklace, wandering in the mountains.”

Climbing lesson

Amelia cuddled herself into some furs, close to the large bonfire. They were on a climbing trip with a nice picnic and camping in the mountains of Galmair and she really enjoyed to have some time with her friends, after all the hard work during the past months. Seeing Claire struggling so much with climbing remembered her on her own climbing lessons, luring a smile on her lips. And while she listened to the conversations of the others, her thoughts travelled back to her time with Oxi’s family in the mountains again…

The decision was easy, as there was no doubt about what had to be done. They would do all they could to restore the sacred chamber and the shrine. And while Rashaun, Sadi and Abrasha started to work on the statue immediately, Anthonya, Kyros, Amelia and Branwen started by cleaning the chamber and get rid of the mess. Only Anisa was too afraid to set even a foot in there.

Days passed by and since the men were busy to restore the statue and with the pass still blocked, there was not much they could do. Spring was nearly over and the days kept getting warmer, which meant, one would no longer feel like freezing outside, this high up in the mountains. Normally, it would have been the right time to clear the pass now, but whenever they tried, there was a rumbling at night and the next day, it was even blocked more than before.

To pass the time, the kids came up with an idea as they were sitting in the kitchen with Daria and Anisa over some tea and cookies.
“Amelia, say, can you climb?”, Kyros asked innocently.
“Climb? Me? Sorry, but I never learned it.
In Brimshire, girls are not allowed to climb around”
, Amelia responded with a light shrug.
“See! Told you!”, Branwen grinned at Teilra, opening her hand demandingly to receive some of Teilra’s share of cookies, who surrendered with an annoyed gaze.
“Then you need to learn it”, Anthonya said dryly.
“Dad mentioned it would be needed for Letma.”
“Meaning, you were eavesdropping again, hmmmm?” Amelia gave the girl a slightly rebuking gaze but chuckled.
Anthonya raised her hands defensively, gesturing wildly as if she could dismiss it somehow.
“That doesn’t matter now!
What matters is, you need to learn how to climb, Ami!”

“And we will teach you!”, Kyros bulged in, his mouth still half-full with cookies, earning a rebuking gaze from Anisa.
“So, get some pants on and let’s go outside?”
Amelia arched a brow. “Pants...”, she echoed as if he was telling her to go out in underwear.
“Of course. Best would be leather pants so you won’t cut yourself at sharp-edged rocks”, Teilra explained, sounding totally logical.
“Leather… pants…”, Amelia echoed again, this time looking as if Teilra just suggested to go naked. She shook her head with a blush.
“Impossible! That’s inappropriate for…!”
“For a good girl?”, Anthonya finished the sentence, giving a perfect mimicry of Amelia, and everyone chuckled for a moment… except for Amelia herself, who blushed even more.
“I mean… you can’t climb with a skirt, Ami”, Anthonya added dryly.
“You can have a pair of mine and adjust them.”, Anisa said suddenly, earning a surprised gaze from Amelia.
“What? They are best for some kinds of work. We are a family of miners, after all.”
“Then it is settled”, Anthonya said with a firm nod.
“Your climbing lessons will start tomorrow. And no excuses!”
“Guess, I have no choice, hm?” Amelia gave her a playfully suffering gaze, then chuckled with a sigh.
“Nope, not at all!”, Branwen said with a laughter and all joined in…

Signs of the Gods

Amelia was on her way home, after checking on one of the orphans, who was suffering from a food poisoning after eating something foul. It was the day of the festival of gratitude and her thoughts still lingered with the event. The festival had been a great success and she was happy, so many attended from all three realms. It seemed they really enjoyed themselves, which was her main goal, this close to Mas. She only missed Cynthia, to be honest. Performing or not, Amelia would just have been happy to see her joining. But she was sure, her friend had her reasons and was just thankful, to have her back in one piece after such a long time. Also, Clairette leaving so suddenly made her worry…

However, seeing so many following her at the offering ground, giving their own prayers and offerings, filled her heart with joy. Never had it been so many, expressing their honest gratitude to the gods. Well, almost… At first, she was not sure if he did it really on purpose, but Malchus’ attitude on the offering felt like he was mocking the whole offering ceremony and the prayers of everyone, yes even mocking the gods. It felt like an insult to her efforts, a disgrace… When she saw him sliding some wine bottles from the buffet to his bags, as he left, she couldn’t believe it. Why was there always someone stealing… and on top on a festival dedicated to the gods?

She shook her head and shooed the thought off, guiding her thoughts to the more pleasant part. The gods had given a sign of their appreciation! As all the offerings vanished into sparkling light and some flowers grew miraculously in their place. It filled her heart with deep reverence and happiness alike.
Well, almost all offerings, that is. The tobacco leaves, which Malchus had just scattered over the whole offerings so mockingly as his so-called symbol of gratitude to Ushara, had been blown right back at him instead of vanishing within the light. Amelia chuckled when she remembered Sir Exelous’ dry comment: “The gods have spoken…”

Indeed, they did and it made Amelia remembering her trip with the kids to the mountains, once more…

Over a year had passed, already and the winter had the house in it’s cold grasp, again, when the work on the statue was finally finished. They had waited for Mas to be over and it was time, to finally restore the shrine again. Everyone has worked hard that day, doing their best with the few remaining resources they had left, Even Anisa and Daria helped decorating the altar, as a final step. Now, the grownups were sitting in the kitchen, altogether, while a silent night was laying over the whole place, somehow feeling like a cosy blanket as there was a calm, serene atmosphere lingering over the place.

“Finally done, at least”, Sadi broke the silence, sipping from his beer.
“Aye, let’s hope Ushara has mercy and finally lets us free the pass.”, Dworin grumbled.
“About time, we get home. Pretty sure, Left hand and his drag- erm… Era are worried.” ,
“Are you sure, you are not just mentioning that because this is actually the last mugs of beer we have left?”, Rashaun asked dryly, having everyone breaking into a chuckle.
“Well, actually, if we keep it a bit short, we will have food for another four months, but after that…”, Daria mentioned, quickly adding: “But I’m sure that we will be alright!”
Amelia nodded with a soft smile, sipping from her tea. “Aye… I’m sure, Lady Ushara will acknowledge our efforts. It is a miracle we actually got to see the chamber of the legend and get a chance to do our share, don’t you agree?”
“Hear, hear!” Sadi raised his mug, followed by everyone.

Later that night, when all were in bed, there was a loud rumbling outside and the ground was shaking just slightly. Abrasha was the first to run outside with a lantern and on his bare feet. Meantime, everyone gathered in front of the house. Abrasha waved the lantern from afar, calling for them “Come on over! You got to see this!”
There they were, staring at the place, were the entrance of the legendary cave had been, in disbelief.
“It’s gone!”, Sadi said in astonishment, carefully touching the smooth, solid rock face. “As if it had never been there!”
“Just like the legend…”, Rashaun said with dignified calm.

After that night, nothing happened anymore and by the end of spring, they had finally freed the pass again, returning home to Galmair…

((From here on out I will try to catch up with actual events, again...))

Mas

Mas was over and slowly, everything had returned to the normal rhythm of daily life, just like every year. Well, as normal as possible with that strange coffin still in front of the gates... Amelia was sitting at her desk, finishing her last reports about the happenings of the dark days as well as the hospital files. It all began so eerie with those two carriers, Henry and Mathias, who were obviously tricked into the whole scheme as well. Come to think of them, she hadn’t seen them, ever since. She wondered if they would still be residing at the Temple of Malachin in Cadomyr.
It had been one coffin to every realm, bearing the name of a resident. Greum at Galmair, Aleytys at Cadomyr and Caswir at Runewick. An obvious fraud and trap, since all three were proven to be alive and around. Once set down, the coffins couldn’t be moved the slightest bit and every attempt of the mages to sense anything just seemed to fail. While it was ordered to leave to coffins untouched until after Mas in Cadomyr and Galmair, Runewick of course couldn’t resist to fiddle around with it, earning a first wave of undead attacking the town. At least, that was what Amelia heard.
The situation got even more strange when the coffin in front of Galmair suddenly came to life. There were rumbling noises, knocking... and finally a call for help. They decided to try and open the coffin, breaching the nailed lid, ready to slay what was inside. But to everyone’s surprise, two halflings jumped out of it, catching for breath. It was Corwin and Cormac! Both danced and jiggled around merrily, bragging to have won a game of hide and seek. It was obvious they were tricked and trapped inside the coffin and didn’t even realize they had been caught within a death trap. Sadly, they had no idea who was behind the whole thing, either, just like Henry or Mathias.

However, there was no time for relief. Runewick was under massive attack of undead, coming from the coffin, calling for help...

Amelia chewed on her lower lip, her gaze darkening as she remembered what happened there. They approached from the harbour, since the teleporter was overrun completely. While she stood back, taking cover, everyone else was trying to ward off the undead, which kept coming at them, wave after wave. The fight was tense, so no one realized the strange, scary orc who approached from the rear. No one except for Corwin and Cormac, that is. Those two halflings, trying to protect her so bravely, since his only goal had been Amelia herself. The thought alone was enough to make her shiver again. Of course, she had been ready to obey. She didn’t want those two to risk their lives for her. But then the tables turned and suddenly everyone else was behind her and it was Aswe, realizing the situation quickly and ordered to slay the orc. From there on out, everything went so fast, and Amelia’s memory got blurred by shock and fear. She could still remember the orc grabbed her and tried to toss her into a portal nearby. She was unsure if she just had been lucky or if the gods had saved her once more, but the portal closed right in front of her nose, letting her crush to the bridge instead. The others rushed in, fighting the orc, while she had just squatted on the bridge in panic, with Corbin and Cormac trying to calm her.

But it was later at the hospital, when she came to fully realize, how dangerous and dire the whole situation had been. While everyone stayed relatively well during the waves of undead, they all got beaten up badly by this one orc, suffering serious injuries. It was Aswe who grounded her, so she could fulfil her duty and tend to the wounded. Well, at least to Clairette, while Aswe took care for Katharina, Malchus and Caswir.

A single tear ran down her cheek as she reflected her thoughts. It happened again. So many suffered because they wanted to protect her. She was supposed to be a light in the dark, not a curse to her friends. If she just had obeyed... would they have been safe, then? She shook her head, slapping herself for the thought. What nonsense! Of course not! Those she was dear to would have suffered and worried for her, ready to risk all in order to get her back safely! But still... Claire... she suffered the worst... her face got burned badly and chances were high she would keep some scars. Though knowing better, Amelia couldn’t help but feel guilty.

Who was that orc anyway?
Why was he after her, out of all?
Where the others right?
Was it just because she was the easiest prey at that moment?
Or because she was one of the rare healers?
Or was there more to it?
What did he want from her?
And what was even worse: He escaped! Meaning, he was still out there!
Did that mean, she couldn’t leave the town safely, anymore?

No! She would not allow that to limit her!
Was she scared?
Oh hell, yes she was!
But she had her duty… and her vow!
It would take more to extinguish the light she vowed to be!

With a determined nod to herself, she wiped the traces her tears away and her gaze shifted to a letter, she’d received this morning.

Dear Miss Rotholz,

I’m terribly sorry to inform you that there was a miscalculation referring to the eclipse. I assure you though, the mistake was not on me. I must have had the wrong data sheet! It’s so hard to get capable assistants these days! It will be way later this year. I don’t have an exact date yet, but I will inform you as soon as I got the real calculation ready. Since you wrote me about your plans for the eclipse, I’d suggest postponing your little festival. I’m sorry for the inconvenience.

Sincerily
~ Severinius Thurgerton
Professor of astrology at the academy of Salkamar
Amelia sighed and took some parchments to write the notes of postponement and some letters to the serious newspapers, mumbling to herself.
“Just great...”

Dylan

Amelia entered her room, closing the door, taking a deep breath. She slowly sits at the edge of the bed and her gaze tenderly lies on the young man’s face, who seemed to be sleeping peacefully, luring a gentle smile on her lips.

Dylan.

He sure no longer was the shy, sheepish, and insecure boy that once ended up in Galmair, driven by misfortune and tragedy, having lost all he ever knew, and without any perspective. Back then, she just wanted to help him, relief his pain, and get him to start a new life, here in Galmair. It was the time when she was ready to cast away all her hopes for finding love for herself, ready to become a priestess in order to serve her divine task and her goddess best, putting her own good behind everything else.

Who would have thought, that this lad would be the one to finally heal her heart?

It wasn’t long, before Dylan seemed to get to cling to her. He adored her like an angel and at first, it made her feel a bit uncomfortable. She was nothing special, after all. But soon, he began to crack the walls she had built to protect her wounded heart, without her even noticing it.

When he stole the first kiss from her, she was totally caught off guard… and it threw her out of balance, confusing her for days! Suddenly, she had to deal with all those feelings, she had tried to cast away, having them storming at her, once more. While he had been unaware of it all, not knowing her past, he just engulfed her with his feelings, finally finding a way to her heart…

And captured it for good.

She chuckled quietly. How little had he known, back then, seeming naïve and careless. Even more so when he overthrew her off guard, asking for her hand… or better, asked Oxi! Of course, Oxi wasn’t happy with it, even more so since she was careless enough to say she might agree, when he asked her once, what she thought was in a hypothetical way, far in the future. But then, she stood to her word, seeing Dylan was serious. Her heart had been already sure, back then.

But of course, Oxi had been right, to oppose. It was all too rushed and both so unexperienced. Dylan still had a way to go, learning to lead a life of his own, setting goals and make them real. Even more so, since he obviously still did understand so little about her, her past, dreams, fears and motives. While she had to admit, she agreed to his proposal out of her heart, but without really realizing all consequences.

Back then Oxi obligated Dylan to grow, to proof to him, his intentions were truly earnest and honourable. But he also offered him help in his own way by offering him a perspective, making him kind of his apprentice. From there on out, Oxi obviously would have a quite careful eye on him and he stated clear, he would hold him responsible, if Dylan would ever fail her or hurt her in any way…

All that had begun more than a year ago, now.
And for sure, Dylan had grown…

The, slender, insecure lad had turned into a strong, hard-working man, gaining more and more self-confidence. Actually, his stuttering was gone completely by now, when the two of them were alone. And even with others, it had become less. However, he still had a talent for silly comments and bad timing, ever so often, without noticing it, talking himself literally into trouble. Which could certainly lead to complicate situations, given the fact, that she still strived for diplomatic training, herself.

Though, Dylan had surprised her today, by addressing Oxi about the Sewer Papers, being angry about the nonsense written about Amelia, knowing it frustrated her. But not only that: he actually came up with a pretty good idea to handle the issue. Something sure had changed about him, lately. He always found the right words with her, comforting her and grounding her, after Mas, reassuring her and giving her the strength to go on in a new, considerate and confident way. She felt safe and warm with him, as if nothing bad could reach her, when he was holding her close. She tried to think back when it began. Was it the Festival of Gratitude, where she had lured Dylan and Oxi into a private talk and left them alone? Or was it after the training drill on the citadel, where he was eager to come along to protect her? Whatever and whenever it happened, it sure made her love him even more…

The thought brought another soft and tender smile to her lips, as she gently pushed a strand of hair off his forehead. When she just gathered all her courage to ask Oxi for another key to her flat for Dylan, she was surprised by both. Dylan had just acted so serious and confident, reassuring Oxi to keep her safe and honour her, and without the slightest studder. That wasn’t the boy any longer, but the young man he had vowed to become. Oxi on the other hand seemed not pleased at first, but soon, the two seemed suddenly to find to a new level in their relationship, ending up to tease her together with the old tower joke.

When she parted with Oxi, she found out he knew all along, Dylan was staying at her flat for quite a while, already. Yet, he never had said a single word. Maybe he was just waiting for them to be honest about it? A feeling of happiness and relief came up within her, her heart filled with warm love for both, the love of a daughter for her father and the love of a woman for her man…

Shadows and Lies

Amelia just had returned from Runewick, late at night. It was Azure, walking her home safely. Azure, who suddenly showed up, with the worst timing ever, on this faithful day. Both had given each other their last goodbye and best wishes for the future. Though he said, he would be happy for her, she clearly had seen the sadness in his eyes. She did hurt him, though she wished she had not.

But all that faded in the shadow casted by that calamitous, damn trial. She snuck inside the flat, knowing Dylan would be asleep by now, and sank against the door, sliding down in silent tears.
She was not sure what to expect exactly, when she went to Runewick that day to give Inara some emotional support, but also to witness the trial in order to report about it to the authorities of Galmair. But what she witnessed was far away from what she was prepared for.

Certainly, she was expecting Orion and his defender to pull every card possible to get his head out of the necktie, but she also thought, the actual victims would be heard since they had only been requested to give written testimony “in case something goes wrong” at the town meeting of Runewick, meaning in case they could not attend. – Well, that’s what they all thought.

But things went different.

As Orion was questioned and his testimony was read aloud, he accused the victims to be lying about the events, even more he accused them to have attacked first, without any provocation! Amelia had not been present that day, luckily. She was well aware; she might have become a victim as well. But what she was sure of was, that Aly, who was accused to have launched the initial attack would not attack a “harmless, unarmed visitor” out of a whim.

After that, she had expected the victims could raise word and answer to said accusations. But they were not even questioned and when Katharina demanded to be heard, they were just referred to their written testimonies and thus it would not be necessary to hear them out.

Instead, the defender, Delfina de’Puy, called Ka’Shaz as the only impartial witness of the event! Really?! How could she be impartial, being the mate of Sardon, one of the attackers, at all?? Even more since her senses were affected for the worse during Mas? Amelia did not want any harm for the lizard woman. She never had any trouble with her. But she was well aware that said condition during Mas could mess with her memory and even more so, make her vulnerable for the influence of those she relied on to keep herself under control.

Amelia was never able to forget what she once did to the dragon egg, she called one of her beloved children, during one Mas. In great aggression and frustration, she tossed it against a column. What mother would do so if she was being master of her senses?! Only Sardon was able to calm her down, back then…

To her own surprise, Aswe suddenly called her as a witness. Amelia was caught totally off guard, overrun and unprepared. How could she give any testimony, since she had not even been there? But Aswe called her as the medico of Galmair, for her expertise about Ka’Shaz possible condition and the effect on her testimony. Amelia felt terribly uncomfortable and nervous. However, she was sure there was nothing she could do wrong, as long as she just told the truth, staying neutral – according to her well-known vows. It was hard on her, since she felt like shining a bad light on Ka’Shaz for something she was not at fault. But to her surprise, it seemed that the lizard did not even care.

Then all blew up to her as Delfina suddenly asked about her own connection to Inara. She answered truthfully, of course. Inara was a sister to her. Not only out of the deep bond they shared, but her family also declared her so, officially. Well, she kept the last part, since she felt it wouldn’t matter. But it had been enough. Delfina rendered her as non-impartial for being close to Inara! Though Amelia was aware that Delfina had to use everything she could to fulfil her duty, it had been a slap in her face. She testified as a medico, not as a witness! By questioning her testimony, she questioned her very integrity and expertise as a medico, implying she would lie about medical facts in order to help someone who was dear to her. And what did hurt her even more, she had proven to uphold absolute neutrality, so often in the past! How could she be a light if people start to doubt her honesty?! Even if it would break her heart, she would testify against her dear ones if they did anything wrong… Then, Delfina took her final blow on her, using her own expertise for the defence of Orion. She was so triumphant; she did not even wait for her final statement until Amelia was sent back to her seat.

Amelia felt like being crushed to a wall, when she realized she had been played like a puppet on a string. Delfina… the same woman who had granted her protection the other day. Who was that woman anyway? Was she really just fulfilling her duty as defender? Or was she actually enjoying this?

She could not believe it. She had been turned into a dagger to stab her friends in the back… At least that was how she felt. It took her all her strength not to break down in front of everyone, when the court retreated to discuss. But the moment she left the building, she could no longer hold back her tears. She felt terrible, shattered. She came here in hope for justice, but instead, it had all just been lies and twisted words. With this, the honourable knights of Cadomyr and the countess, no, her friends were declared to be liars! Even worse! They were rendered to possibly be the culprit here! Without any chance to take word!

Claire had followed her and took a walk with her. And in her own, strange way, she was able to help her calm down as always, by asking her strange questions. Claire was rarely the type to give comfort, and yet Amelia was well aware, she was worried for her and she was grateful to have her friend by her side.

Then, the verdict was announced… and it was a slap in the face. 100 Gold.. that was the fee that they called for sending Inara to Cherga. And that was it… 100 Gold… So, that was the price for trying to take a life?!

This was no justice! This was a bad joke! With this, Runewick had made a clear statement. If you want to to harm someone, you only have to be a Runewickian. Do as you please and when you get caught, say the victim attacked you first and play the trauma card… you don’t even have to be sorry! You just get a slap on the wrist and have to pay. All good, it as long as there’s no witness that can proof to be impartial beyond all doubt. Which was impossible! In a small place like Illarion, there is always a high possibility that there is a connection of some sort.

She did not even realize that Dylan had lit the oil lamps. Of course, she had woken him. Or possibly Lil, who was trying to lick the tears off her face. He did not ask much, since she was not even able to answer, as her tears just didn’t want to cease. He just kneeled beside her, giving her a tight hug, and she hid her face at his shoulder…

The next day, she just finished her report for Oxi about the trial. Her heart was still heavy as a rock and her thoughts were with her friends, especially Inara. She knew they must be devastated, frustrated, burning with anger and the cold feeling of helplessness. That was exactly how she felt as well. Aswe had assured her that things would change. That Runewick would no longer harbour criminals. But she fought on a lost position. Nothing had changed at all and despite the assurance of Malchus, she felt all but safe, now.

Her thoughts were interrupted all of sudden when there was a knock on the door. A halfling just handed her a copy of the declaration of Cadomyr and took her reports to deliver them. She closed the door and read it.. twice. With a sigh, she ran a hand through her messed hair. Sure, she could understand the reaction. There had to be diplomatic consequences. However, this twist of events did cast a dreadful shadow. Galmair was an ally to Cadomyr by treaty. She was not sure how Oxi would react to this, yet. But one thing was for sure…

The real winner of this were the dark forces…

She walked out on the balcony and the cold wind engulfed her like an icy grasp. She gazed up to the sky, whispering almost desperately:

“Goddess… Have mercy on us all!”

Resignation

Slowly and quietly, Amelia snug into the flat. It had been late at night and she did not want to wake Dylan, who certainly had spent his day hard working in the mines, again. Lil awaited her at the door, greeting her with a low squeaking sound and a wagging tail. Amelia quickly cuddled the dog, before she would wake up Dylan in the end.

It was the end of what had become her daily routine, ever since her talk with Oxi and Clairette, back that evening. She felt helpless facing the overall situation. The diplomatic chaos, caused by the trial and its consequences felt like smothering all of her efforts. She felt like being in the wrong place, unable to do anything against it.

Claire had lied to Malchus about the murder for a reason she could not understand, no matter how hard she tried. Even if the overall situation with Runewick was tense, the murder cases and thus the murderer was a problem concerning all realms and information about it was certainly not a state secret! She would have understood, if it had been a delicate topic, concerning Galmair, Cadomyr, or something related to the affairs with Runewick. But the murder? It was a topic that was discussed everywhere, nonetheless! What use would it have to lie about it and thus maybe even slowing down the investigations? It would rather help the murderer, than anyone else! Even thinking of it made her furious again. She had already sent a letter to Aswe with a copy of her report about the murdered woman, sharing her information as Aswe had shared hers with her. When Malchus would report Claire’s lie… She felt like being rendered a liar… or an idiot.

And Oxi? Though he said he valued her perspective, she still got the feeling he did not trust in her ability to differ what was better kept secret and what not. She knew, that Claire tended to be kind of paranoid and see possible schemes and threats behind every corner. But Oxi? He had asked if she was thinking of him as being incompetent… That hit her hard. After all, she had just been honest about her impressions and feelings. This whole mess with Runewick… yes, sure, there had to be consequences. But suspecting everyone to be a spy would only gain mistrust and stir conflict, wouldn’t it? And only the dark forces would profit from that! Was she really the only one to realize that?! Or were these damn politics more important than that? For a while, Amelia really had hope for the three realms to beat Letma together, one day. But now, her hope started to fade…

She had begun to cling to her duties, keeping the hospital ready and clean, taking care to the paperwork that kept coming from the Crest or attending to her studies. Also, neither Yridia nor Allesandra had been seen lately, so she was on her own with those on top. She just kept on with that daily routine, hiding her concerns and slowly growing resignation behind a light smile, but kept growing more and more serious and silent. A part of her secretly longed to go to Brimshire, and be it just for a change of perspective. But with her beloved home still being under siege and not knowing of the real current situation there, that had not been an option either.

And after all… Here, she had Dylan, Oxi… her duties… and her vow to keep…
