7th Ronas 71 - Thoughts on Trial

Post by Clairette »

((3rd Person Perpective))

For the white haired, dark skinned elfess the trial of the human man and former ranger of Runewick, Orion Lysander, had been a curious event. It had been held in Runewick, in a great hall with Aswe, Caswir and Malchus as judges and many tables and chairs for everyone who wanted to watch or who was otherwise involved in one or another way. Clairette had accompanied Amelia, who seemed to have accompanied Lady Inara. Lady Inara was there as she was one of the knights that had been attacked. The other knights of Cadomyr were there as well, expect for Sir Xannu and a late-arriving Sir K'shire. Also, the Countess of Cadomyr had come to witness the trial.

From her chair in the great hall she had been able to observe the goings-on in front, the back and forth of the arguments, but also the reactions of the audience. The other people who had been present were Runewick's Archmage - whom she had failed to recognise - and Deanna, Orion, his defense Delfina De'Puy and Kashaz, and a red haired human man who had been taking notes in the great hall.

The human defendant Delfina De'Puy had greatly impressed Clairette. Rarely, she had seen someone so good with words. It would be appreciable to have such a person as an ally rather than an enemy.

Amelia had been crying after her neutrality a medico had been questioned by Delfina. They took a short walk and talked a bit, so that the human woman could calm down before they returned to the great hall again. Claire knew Amelia had cried because she had been sad and hurt, but the elfess saw the words of Delfina as mere strategy of defence rather than an honest attempt to hurt and bad-mouth Amelia. When they returned to their seats the verdict was still being discussed by the judges it seemed.

Now, the trial was over, the groups disbanded and Clairette was walking home to her flat in Galmair. When making her way through Runewick's streets to the teleporter, she muttered to herself: "[elf] Absurd!"

She was puzzled why the constitution of Runewick called for a lawyer to defend the accused. Amelia had said the lawyer was allowed to do anything legally possible to help the accused. It seemed like a sabotage of the trial by the constitution. Why put someone on trial if not to convict them and punish them? Wasn't a trial held to set an example for all to see?

That had been the purpose of trials in her old home, to display power and set an example, to threaten enemies and punish these who harmed the House.

Here on the surface, things were different. She even hoped the result of the trial had not been determined in advance! If decided in advance, then she'd really have to question the capability of foresight in some of her allies. The Countess had withdrawn the Cadomyrian Ambassador Dame Lamar directly after the verdict had been read. This had more than worried Clairette. It was a sign that things were to go badly in terms of "our realms stand united against Letma".

The next day she had heard about the proclamation of Cadomyr, written by Cadomyr's Herald. She had frowned when learning about this. Would Cadomyr ask Galmair to take a side? Would she have to choose how to position herself?

The Countess' conclusion, that if there was no witness around one could be stabbed and then blamed for starting a fight was nothing new to her. This just rang a very familiar bell. Anyhow, she'd not been comfortable to set foot to Runewick before...

---

The thing she was way more excited about was the brief mention of teleporter magic. Teleporter magic!? She wanted to learn about this as well, though not to cut Galmair off from any other realm, but it was one of the hints and hopes the Shaman had given her when she was still her student, that maybe Clairette could find a way to her old home by teleportation.

The Mage Master Rhaindierne who once had helped the Shaman and her repairing the broken teleporters was the only person Clairette could think of to ask about this. And if he would have agreed to teach her, he'd surely had demanded a high price in return. And now it seemed Cadomyr was about to be researching teleporter magic? Who was the mage that was researching it? Would she be able to bribe or threaten this person into sharing knowledge with her?
