Only the splinter of a grain of dust! But what an effect! Was it an effect?
Since Granor had promised his cooperation, but had not dared to leave the assigned room with his rat, she had to do something.
The experiment was not allowed to take place in Runewick or in the country. On the one hand Granor could take the substance by force, on the other hand it is not known what effect this substance had on the inhabited countries. The Archmage recommended her a small island for this experiment, which Benvolte Aldyros also visited occasionally. And that was a good thing, because not every one of his first experiments with slime could be considered a success.
The ship was at the agreed place. The sailors even they was elven demanded a higher wage than agreed, for they had waited longer. What had happened? How long was she unconscious? A reddish fog floated in weak memory. It was time to get Granor out of his room! If necessary, by force.
((I quit Illa in a hastily, but I wasn't feeling well. I miss the game already and cherished chars. Sorry for that))

Cass hadn't been around Runewick much but knew there was a blank space when one person in particular was missing. Gazing at the sea, she closed her eyes and made a silly child's wish to see her friend again before going about her errands..

Sometimes discretion was required... and so he had recommended her a place and allowed her to proceed alone without an assistant. Perhaps he should have known better with the reputation of these alchemists. Too many days had passed though and still no sign of her. Morning and night someone was dispatched to the harbour, awaiting her return.

She stands in front of the towns board and looks at the latest letters.
"A patience... like a dwarf's bladder during a drinking event." she says quietly to herself.
Finally she goes to the laboratory, whispering: "It's not the threshing hammer that separates the wheat from the chaff.... but the wind".
In her hands she holds a roll of parchment and a red can. "Time for the storm!

She looks around the faculty: "three, and here the fourth. And another one at the top, five!" For a moment she bites her lips thoughtfully "we'll need another one". As she steps out of the building, she thinks out loud: "But will we also get so many alchemists together?

The elfess stands on the bridge in front of the Runewick and looks over the overgrown forecourt of the city. She holds a parchment in her hands and quotes what is written on it:
"violet lily - yellow fern - blue grass - red root - grey reed - green trap - A.B. .... but what do this mean?

Carefully she scatters a rasped marsh flower into a small cauldron which is already filled with a shimmering brew and stands in a larger cauldron filled with water.
She lightly taps the end of a blade of grass into a small tin filled with red powder. Than she closes the can again and taps this blade of grass lightly over the small cauldron. She quickly moves back a little bit from the bowl and observes the reaction. For a moment nothing happens, but suddenly it begins to crackle, the water in the cooling cauldron starts to boil, only to evaporate almost abruptly a moment later. The surroundings are covered in steam and the crackling becomes frighteningly loud. Suddenly the contents shoot up from the boiler in a multicolored rain of sparks and rise quickly to the top where they finally explode with a loud bang. A heavy red cloud covers the area and sinks down. Everything that comes in contact with this descending cloud starts to glow in different colors. The elfess stands with outstretched arms in this landscape and looks at her hands on which a colorful glimmer dances. A soothing warmth pervades them.
Slowly the cloud sets down and the glow goes out little by little.
She walks closer to the cauldron and looks at it. Both cauldrons are still standing inside each other, completely dry they still radiate a crackling heat, but they are still standing on their original place.
She kneels beside the cauldron and notices that it has not moved a finger's breadth into the depth. Again no success, or maybe it was? She had now already tested many of the known herbs, most of them showed no or only weak reactions. This reaction was completely different, much stronger and very surprising. She thinks about what had happened. It was the direction! The direction of action went up, the reaction brew went up, and the desired effect occurred in a cloud above her. Now it was time to proceed logically. The most logical seeming explanation is usually the one, which occurs. So what does the school of alchemy say about the marsh flower? Two effects of different kind and direction. Lowering of Caprazin and lifting of Dracolin. She unfold a parchment and run her finger searching over a list until she pauses and say with a smile "Strawberry! Why didn't I think of that right away?"
After the cauldrons had cooled down, she fills some water into the inner cauldron and the outer cauldron almost to the brim. Than she successively pours two brews of six bottles one after the other into the small cauldron. Each of the six brews has a different color.
After letting the mixed brew rest for a while, she adds a crushed strawberry. Again she dabs the blade of grass into the powder, and again she taps the few crumbs of powder over the small kettle. Thereupon she removes herself quickly.
For a moment nothing happens, then it begins to crackle again and the water in the cooling kettle starts to boil, and evaporate again abruptly a moment later. The surroundings are wrapped in steam and a louder crackling can be heard....

((english version below))

<o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o>

From a distance she sees Eli sitting on the bench. He proudly strokes his beard while talking to Kyre and Jakob. They laugh when Eli speaks. She must smile at the sight. With his open manner and cordiality he fascinates everyone and is able to win them over for his ideas. She was obviously the only one who contradicted him recently.
She was aware that she does not have this effect on the citizens and other people. She had not inherited the warmth of her mother Lorenna, her aloofness was taught to her by Deannalin, her grandmother, under whose care she spent the longest time of her young years. "Love not those whom you may be forced to disappoint" was her advice. In this way, she has long led those who walk in the shadows - the elves of the Aryon'athar.
Deanna often thought about her grandmother's words, and she liked to be alone with her thoughts... did she really like it?

She sees Oxiana smiling and flattering a mixed group of citizens from Runewick and Galmair, who listen to his words almost adoringly. Deannalin had warned her about this kind of people. Even if she doesn't always classify Oxiana's stubbornness as logical, she does have a certain sympathy for him, which is not the same as trusting him.

She also sees Katharina listening to some of her subjects with a serious look. The cautious, almost tense attitude of the people around her was self-explanatory. Many of her encounters are also marked by tension, which began when Katharina was raised to nobility in Cadomyr. A logical explanation for Deanna was her own distanced attitude towards Katharina.
At Tol Vanima she had deliberately avoided a close familiarity with the people she had taken in, so as not to allow suspicion of different treatment of the elves ... "Love not those whom you may be forced to disappoint".

The conversations become quieter and finally it is silent. Deanna notices that everyone is looking at her in silence, the laughter is silenced. Everyone looks at her silently and expressionlessly. She feels caught and oppressed, finally she turns around. Feeling the look in her back she starts to run and gets faster and faster. Suddenly something rises from the ground... a rope... or a branch... she stumbles and falls. The impact is heavy and overwhelming. The air is pressed out of her lungs, and she just hears a light and a dull bang before it becomes dark around her.

As she gains consciousness, the first thing she notices is the silence around her. She lies bent on her side, an unintelligible pain lies on her body. She perceives the smell of burnt earth and opens her eyes.
Slowly she straightens up to sit and looks at her surroundings. In front of her, some smoke rises from the earth, and until out of many steaming lumps of earth lying around her, everything looks normal. She rises carefully, and it dawns on her what had happened. She can move and seems to have no other injuries. Slowly she walks towards the plume of smoke and finally stops at a hole with a diameter of 2 steps. This is where the cauldron was before!
She looks at the hole with twitching mouth angles, finally she takes a small can out of her bag which she looks at with awe: "A knife tip of it would destroy us...".

((deutsch weiter unten))

She flicks through the books ever more hastily. Finally she straightens her head and looks at the wall opposite. "What am I looking for here?" she says to herself in a low voice. She looks at the numerous books she had already looked through, and she is annoyed with herself because she realises that she would not find the answer in these books. She is also angry that she cannot find a logical explanation for what happened.
Finally she closes the book, gets up and goes to the window. In the east, north and also between the meeting house and the guard, more of these rocks have appeared, threatening to rise into the sky. She struggles with her composure and finally turns away, trying to grasp a clear thought. Once again she tries to reconstruct what happened.

The merinium cauldron made by Drugar was of excellent quality, even an emblem with a dragon was incorporated. Also the construction of the cooling boiler, which was directed by Drugar, went perfectly according to Lennier's plans.
She thinks of Lennier for a moment and regrets that he did not see his construction himself.

Even if the preparation of the six brews was not optimal, because the danger of an uncontrolled reaction was very high, and the manuscript of Aldyros Benvolte explicitly pointed this out, the construction of the cooling boiler on the one hand, but also the careful preparation of Sammy, on the other hand, might have contributed to the success.
Even if Sammy has his own peculiarities in other respects, in this matter he has disciplined himself in keeping to her specifications for cooling. His suggestion to use perpetual ice may also have contributed to the success.

But was it a success or did it fail? Could this measure have made matters worse? Will Runewick, and indeed the other empires in the country, perish as a result?
After some thought, she shakes her head as if to reaffirm her thoughts. For almost three years she has been studying this procedure, based on a manuscript by Benvolte and this extract, which was once delivered to her in a strange way. She has researched and questioned the procedure and the ingredients in every detail. At least here she has no doubt that she has left something unnoticed.
But what did these rocks mean? No, she was not naive enough to believe that the column and the portals would disappear without a struggle. But what kind of resistance is that? Rigid rocks and toxic gas clouds. Either they hadn't checked everything properly in the excitement after the reaction and missed some rocks, or more of these rocks appeared.

The calm in the city is disturbing. The citizens have been keeping to themselves for weeks, within Runewick there is no criticism and no confirmation of the action.

Interesting was the reaction at Letma, which was obviously a consequence of what happened in Runewick. After a long period of passivity, the red army of undead appeared in front of Letma in surprisingly aggressive numbers. Everything suggests that there may have been a connection to the columns and portals before Runewick after all...

<o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o><o>

He'd not done well by her, in fact, he began to wonder if he'd ever done well by any female consistently. He respected Deanna, told her as often as he felt necessary. Despite his efforts early on, they were at odds over and over again. At times, it didn't seem like they could agree on anything.

Patience.

Eli told himself repeatedly to be patient with Deanna. He willed himself to listen more than he spoke- a damn near impossibility (truth well-known). The stubborn seasoned mage simply couldn't let a person of Deanna's repute feel ostracized or misplaced. An elfess with enough gall to be a voice of reason against the egomaniacal brotherhood of the Bearers warranted respect and esteem in Runewick. The decade had not been kind to their fair city: tumult, demons, indifference, and politics.

Pointless.

Compare it to the moment the world thought Deanna died. Eli thinks about that moment often. In his mind, it was one of the darkest days in Runewick history. Why? Simply put, it was the emptiness paired with a legacy lost. If the unconquerable, self-determined, forward thinking elfess could not be there to lead Runewick into a season of peace and stability, all others be damned. Life is not always a bed of roses, steel to be forged. Life is too often strife, bloodshed, loss, misunderstandings, an unwinnable argument, doing your absolute best and getting Betsy dung in return.

Persevere.

The single word he prayed into Deanna's life, Kyre's, Caswir's, Jakob's, Sammy's and maybe Fooser. Yet another obstacle, a challenge, an opportunity for Runewick to come together. Time was rarely on Eli's side, but he'd make the best of it. Deanna had trusted him to execute a plan, and he didn't want to let her down.

Come on Nargun! Spin those fortunes in our favor.
