Could we not have a few fishing sites in cavern waters ? leech the colour out of a fish graphic and give it large blind black eyes and call it a cave fish(only fish safe enough for dwarves to eat ).

Sooner or later you will be able to eat all plants. That is, you will be able to put them in your mouth and swallow. The future will show If you would call the result "eating"
