Iris sighs, looking out to the lake, its water lapping against itself in calm poetic motions. She sits on the fountain, her feet dragging throw the snow, but she hardly notices the cold. Why? The word echoes in her voice over and over again, keeping a rythmic beat with her breathing. She sighs once more, looking to the old book in her lap, its pages worn from many turnings and the ink only starting to fade. She turns the page slowly, reading it the twelth time, searching for hidden meanings. Her long hair blows in the wind, mingling with the frozen fountain and getting wet. Iris dosnt notice though, her focus is turned on the book as she searches for answers to her past. She reaches the place where it stops in the middle, and pauses, resting the book in her lap once more. Why? The words continue to echo in their haunting tone. Why didnt I know until now? The words wrapped around her heart like a rope, squeezing her in from all sides until she was sure she would faint. Finally she gained control, taking deep breaths and picking up the book again, starting over from the begining. She only reads a minute before reaching that diary entry that makes her wonder anew. Who? The words change this time, echoing a new word. Iris sighs again, her forehead creasing in the same way as her fathers. Who is she, and why did'nt I know? The query in her head echoes louder, reverberating against her skull until she cannot take it. Leaning her head on her lap, her face pressed against the closed book, she begins to cry. The tears are a comfort, rushing through her like a potion, filling her completely with the wonder and the pain. The tears flow for too long for her to tell.

Iris watches the dove fly off, hoisting the sack over her shoulder and taking slow steps up the gangplank. Handing her ticket to the shipman, she numbly crosses to a bench and sits, staring off into the sea. Every inch of her body was screaming, begging her to run off this ship and into her fathers arms. But she stayed, repeating her fathers words in her head. The only time your body is right, is when it agrees with your mind and heart They ran through her head continually, and were the only thing that kept her on the ship as the sailors hauled the gangplank onto the deck and began on the ropes that held the ship to the dock. He was right, and her mind and heart both knew what she had to do. She had to stay on this ship, and bring her tribe the answers they seeked. Her tribe The words sounded so strange in her head, and her arm was getting sore from pinching. But this was no dream. She had awoken that morning, her hair tangled from tossing and turning and the nights dreams scrolling through her head. That was when she'd remembered. Remembered her tribe, back on the mainland. She had also remembered the urgent mission she had been given seven years ago, the mission she had completed at the cost of her memory. Now she had to finish what she had begun. With a soft sigh she brushed the long hair from her face, watching the isle grow farther and farther away, until it finally dissapeared into the fog.

Altrix sat on the chair for hours, rereading the letter over and over again, also each time he read it was the first. He shook his head slowly in disbelief. Why did she have to go? What did she remember? Will she be alright? Thousands of questions burned through his mind. The last part seemed to connect with him and he finally started writing a letter to respond. He tied the letter to the leg of a dove and released it. He reread the letter several more time, wishing each time that he would find some sort of answers in amongst the words, but each time, it just said the same thing. He soon fell asleep sitting up, the letter falling from his fingers and slowly drifting to the floor.

Iris rubs her wrist, ignoring the pain from the long letter she just sent to her father. The ship would get to the mainland in only a couple hours, and then her task would begin. She had watched the dove until her own tears had blurred the pale sky into a swimming sea of gray and white. She sighed softly, standing from the barrel she sat on and walking up and down the deck. She felt her brow crease in thought, which led to thoughts of Altrix. She stepped up to the edge of the deck, staring out into the sea to minimize the people who would see the tears that began to streak her face. Why? The word applied to everything she thought about. Why she had to leave, why she was crying, why she missed her father so much. The cold, salty air toyed with her hair, knocking it into her face as it always did. She didnt move to brush it free though, and squeezing her eyes tight she pictured her father in her mind again. Im such a silly girl The words stung her mind like fire, but she wondered if they were true. She would be back in a few weeks, so why did she feel like she would never see him again? She knew the answer. The fear inside her was why. She knew the danger of what she was doing, and she knew that if they found her she would be killed with the others. She drove the thoughts from her mind, already mentally composing her next letter to Altrix..

Iris sighs softly, hoisting the sack higher up on her shoulder as she trods through the wood on the worn dirt path. The town had come into view about ten yards ago, the high flag drifting in and out of sight as she walked throught the woods. She marveled at it all. In only a matter of hours she would be back with the tribe, -her- tribe. She quickened her pace, half because she would reach the tribe sooner, and half because she would be able to return to Altrix sooner. Either way she increased speed, her feet aching from the long walk along with her hip. Finally she reached the town gates and passed inside. She made her way to the fortune tellers stall, as they always knew of tribal happenings and the like.

"Excuse me, do you know of the Nature Dwellers?"
The old lady only pointed a craggy finger to the corner of the town wall, where a group of around ten people stood. She knew immediately it was them, for they all wore a green strap of cloth around their heads, along with having a plants, mostly flowers, held against each of their arms with a strip of leather. She remembered these customs. Her heart pounding, she turned to the fortune teller, who had said her name. Iris stopped short. The old lady extended a long strip of green cloth and a strip of leather to her. She took them slowly, tying the band around her head and the flower in her hand to her arm. Taking soft steps in the shadows, she approached them until they were right next to her. Three of them watched her, but probably couldnt see the band in the shadow. Slowly she stepped into the light, and all of their eyes were on her. "Who are you?" It was a man with long black hair against blue eyes.

"I am Iris Sapphira, and I have returned at last." She waited for their expressions, looking down in anxiety. Suddenly she felt strong hands on both her arms. She looked up in alarm, two Nature Dwellers held her, while a man with a large green sash, a tribal elder, stepped forward. "I am sorry lass, but we cannot believe you so easily. Spies against us are common.. we would require proof." He leveled his eyes at her. Iris slowly nodded, waiting for the men to release her. They did, and she slipped the orange flower from the leather strap, holding it to her lips. After it bloomed before their eyes, then budded again, she knew she had won them over. She turned to the man with the black hair, who approached her. "Iris.. welcome home." [/i]

Iris closed her eyes again, lifting the flower to her lips. She opened her mouth, letting the pitches freely flow from her lips. The flower was cool to the touch, and her fingers felt oddly warm against the stem. The flower heard her, she could feel its energy level change slightly as it listened, but it was directly ignoring her. She kept her voice going until she ran out of air, taking in a breath and letting out a long sigh. She shifted a bit on the stone bench she sat on, bumping into someone. Her eyes flew open, and she saw it was Jimel. The man with black hair from before, she vaguely remembered him from long ago. He was around Jo's age, and she remembered having liked him very much long ago. He pushed the lock of hair from her face, ad she felt icy hot tendrils shoot through her face. "Like this." He spoke in a soft voice, taking her hand in his and lifting the flower to his own lips. He let the pitches flow from his lips, and very slowly the top half of the flower drained to white. "You try." He pressed the flower to her own lips, slowly releasing her hand from his. She closed her eyes again, trying to mimic his tones. When she opened her eyes the flower was white. She smiled softly, and he stroked her hair. "You are very talented, and so much more beautiful than any of the other women." She felt her face heat as it surely flushed pink. He stood slowly, offering his hand to her. "Come with me, Il show you the forest." Iris closed her eyes, opened them again and looked into his eyes. Such pretty eyes.

"Im sorry. I cant." She looked away, not wanting to upset him but not wanting to go either. "Why not? Your beautiful and ive loved you ever since I first layed eyes on you." He spoke with a bit of a shake in his voice, as if he was about to cry. She refused to look at him, her whole body tingling and her face on fire.

"Im in love with someone else." She spoke in a flat voice, trying to bite back a combination betweem a scream and a sob. She felt him take in a sharp breath, then release it. Finally he spoke. "He will never know." His hand was on her hair again, trying to caress it. She jerked away.

"No! I love someone else!" She jumped up and ran back to the village, trying to hold back the sobs and failing.
