If it wasn't so chaotic, I probably would have taken the time to write a longer, more descriptive emote. Since it WAS chaotic, it's normal that Blake could have snatched whatever he snatched more or less unnoticed, or at least unnoticed by most, don't you think?

Lesson: You just grab the item, then take your time writing a very long emote about what you did, then you escape. It's not like anyones going to instantly PK you while you type (they wouldn't even know it was you) so there is plenty of time.

Please don't feed the troll here guys - it is a nice discussion about Quests not a discussion about pointing fingers to persons and what you have to emote or what not.

Just keep the thread nice, please

Vigalf looks at the glowing parchment. After unsuccesfull trys to rip it down he takes a big piece of leather and pins it over the parchment.
"Damn Mages..."
damned mage-idiots hurting a tree, without using it!
poor befouled tree..."
...
he cuts down the tree and burns it.
It seems as she would feel every move of the knife which was cutting in the bark of the old oak and the burning tree in the Nordmark.
...
This creatures are more uninterested in nature as i can believe. But they all will learn soon what it means to challenge mother nature - they will coming on her knees and beg to stop the refuse of the nature towards life -

Was die Quests angeht.

Late reply, I know, but just for the record: the reason why I attacked the Demon was because Hanteus did so, and he would certainly have died if he got no help.. As it was a GMed played char I thought we were meant to follow his lead, in a way... I attempted to follow what I thought the GMs had intended.

Note: I only read the first page, so don't kill me for any of my comments if there's some reason that they're bad. I have to go very soon. :P
Ashayen wrote: As for the fear-part, sadly most of the people of gobaith seem to have gone through an anti-fear therapy, all what they probably fear is being called a coward by his friends. :? I felt very disturbed at this, as well. I've played long before now, but recently (within the last month) came back. I was pretty much vexed when alot of people ran off to go fight a mob of demons or some such. All they talked about was fighting the demons, when I remember someone posting long, long ago, saying that even his very powerful character mentally pissed his pants at the sight of a demon. Those things are massive demigods/super-monsters of destruction, and if you think about it, your character should feel very weak in comparison and have the fear of death (and soul-capture by a demon) hanging over his head when making these decisions. That's exactly how I feel it would be in a real encounter, and it's why I really didn't understand the masses that (seemed) to be thinking, "We're a group! Let's kill a demon, yaayyy!". (Now, obviously I wasn't with them, so I don't really know if that was the mentality or not. No offense to anyone, please!).

EDIT: Now I just read more, and if this post sounds demeaning in any way, then by all means remove it. It's not meant to be (hopefully just understood as tips to keep in mind for the future).

Well currently, lots of the island -has- been de-feared. A large demon appears the destroy the world. Now, one would think that this would be a large fear. But, then you recall, "Oh, well there were demons here a few months ago, a large mass of dragons with ice breath, a few golems attack weekly, zombies used to invade nightly, bandits are always an issue, blah blah blah, priests promise ever lasting glory in a battle.." You become less afraid. Even less, when you realise, "Oh -crap-, this creature could actually destroy the world if we leave it alone. Everyone, lets all go and -completely- attack. Mages, make sure to heal, no lost souls today!" It becomes less of a fear thing, and more bravery. This attack, most knew would be very serious, thus the large turn out. If it was anything less, they would have shrugged it off.

Fear comes with respect, and in rl such a massive group as that one would naturally display less fear. Also, less is better when it comes to all-powerful demons. Your characters wouldnt act cowed if they see these things most weeks. I play my character the way i do because hes grown up surrounded by violence, and hes never feared death because he doesnt have much to lose, simply.

To be honest, I never had the time to go through the dozens of pages regarding Illarion history, but there's been lots of demons spawned here and there recently that I feel they've been "de-specialised".. as in, they're not a big deal anymore, we've seen so much of them that they're just.. meh. Don't know if I make any sense.

It makes perfect sense. I recall that there was a quest where a -large- number of lesser demons were spawned. Like, 30.
So a demon invaded? We took down 30 lesser ones, this one is just a bit larger.

That seems like the mindset.

People arn't going to get scared untill the heads start rolling.

Which makes sense, why would you fear something you know you can defeat?

Next time a big group acts so brashly start to wipe them out.

That'll soon put some fear into them.

Its all very well expecting people to be scared, but try giving them something to actually be scared about.

Well Nalzy-walzy, thing is there were about 6-10 demons, so they were -meant- for us to battle as a little "warm up" for the upcoming quest. I guess a bunch of undead would have done better.

Thats not quite what I was getting at.

If I have a fight with a mouse, I'm not going to be very scared. I can just squish it easily without worry.

If I have a fight with a tiger, I'm going to be bricking it because there is a large chance that if I don't end up dead I'm going to have some pretty nasty wounds.

Players weren't scared of the demons because they were easily defeated. Have been in the past, and probably will be in the future. Most just walked away from the encounter with some shiny loot and a swirlie or two. However if the players came away from the encounter as little white clouds followed by several other little white clouds then they're gonna think twice the next time they attack a demon.

As it stands, attacking has all the benefits and none of the consequences.

Back when I played Nalzaxx I didn't expect people to be scared of me because I was an evil lich. I expected them to be scared of me because I would kill them, steal their items, take their souls and lock their loved ones away. Sure if they attacked they might have come away with some spangly loot and the bravery award, but more than likely it wouldn't end well for them. They knew it, and as such an element of fear was created.

In a similar way, Nalzaxx wasn't scared of the wannabe warriors running around because he could simply step on them without worry. When a big character such as Samantha or Dji or Stephen came around the corner I began to be a little scared, because I knew the encounters with these characters could have a serious consequence for me and my character. It was no longer a case of this is easy, I don't have to worry. It became a case of okay, lets be careful here else I'm not going to win.

Perhaps it is due to the monsters being too weak, or the GM's not anticipating the numbers/tactics of the players or many other factors. The point remains that fear is created when things start to become difficult and that happy go lucky mentality begins to be questioned.

A perfect describe Nalz and very true.
Btw: if Aly encounters a red one i still have a bumping heart - or a fighter i know he is much stronger then just the same. Maybe there is a oversaturate by some players - or the loss of imagine about fear in a game - at least in a ROLEPLAY Game.

But also I read the comments too much too weak monsters and to often, I'm a warrior without fear etc. - blablabla
So - I would say if you as a player having a good Idea for a funny quest let the GM's know - its not easy to satisfy all, to live up to all expectations. I remember funny little quests and some players complained after in MSN * the worst shit ever *

Our GM's doing a damn hard and good work atm. Trying to keep Illarion a lively rich world. If that would be not the case - I would quit. Cause the RP is sometimes only a Ctrl + click mentality - like *HEY you are a warrior/Fighter ? Lets duel *

I attempted to follow what I thought the GMs had intended.
Interesting one right here. I picked this one out, because it is exactly not what is usually wished for. No problem ofcourse, I perfectly understand that players think this. But we never have intended paths in quests. Sure, sometimes we do have a general direction, but we can always improvise. Never go the way the GMs direct you to, unless that is within what your char would do. If your char would sneak around the houses when there are 2 demons talking, attempting to overhear the conversation or perhaps to backstab them, then that is okay too.

Always try to act according to your character, not according to what a GM is telling you!

EDIT: For good measure, you should ofcourse listen to GMs, but only if we explicitely tell you not to do something. This is just concerning quests where we give you a story, or a setting. There are always multiple outcomes, and the GM is always ready for multiple outcomes.

Well, with my recent character i never participated in a quest. Why?
He is not the Character for quests. He is a smith and could not care less about all that fighting that is going on. He is as magical as an iron ingot and thus unable to do anything anyways. If anything magical is involved he would curse the mages and let them handle the mess themselves.
I mean, when he would find an artifact, he could probably sense that it is magical and could examine it but he could not use it. Well, if he could do that technically or not does not matter. He would be too feared that he could not control the mana the item yields and that it could change him in a way. An artifact also could be cursed... Though, while interested in ancient smithing and artifacts he would not dare to bear it for too long.
Another point making him unavailable for quests is his attitude towards strangers. He simply does not care for strangers, when they do not threaten him. He would rather choose to live his life undisturbed. This also applies to monster spawns. He is no fighter or great adventurer. Though, he is curious, which might lead to a point where he accompanies a friend for exploration.
He also is kind of character that does not want to be in spot light. He is no hero, never will be. Not if he can prevent it otherwise. While he likes to be informed about what is going on, he does not see his place in the front line. Why would he? He could die after all or lose an eye or a hand... which is not good for his smithing. So he only acts if his help is indeed needed. Otherwise, he knows that somebody else will do the job just fine. Or he would seek someone and ask him to do the job.

When it comes to fear...i have to say that he fears a lot. Not only other characters and possible consequences - don't know, how often i tried to dodge the inevitable fight with Dain Laiden, hehe, was great. He also fears a lot of lesser things. Such as deep water/destroyed bridges - he can't swim - or spiders. Even thick fog - who knows what is hiding in there? Actually he fears everything he does not know the strength of or that could influence his mind. Demons would be able to influence his mind, to struck him with fear and make him desperate or do things he does not want to. At least that is, what he believes.
Though, if standing with his back against the wall or being annoyed he will become agressive and lose his fear. Especially when ... ugh, no...that would be too much information here. :D

In the end i have to ask...where is the fun to play a super-hero? Would make things too easy for my taste. Though, sadly he probably never will have his own quest because of all the above stated.

The quest with the stuff in Briar was the last one i took part at and I belive this will stay so for quite some time.
And to be honest I did not like it. I did not like it a bit.

When I did a german #me, everyone ignored it.
When I did an english #me, everyone ignored it and I needed twice the time to write it.

At the fights I wasn´t able to see anything until I turned the time the #me´s are showed down to the lowest possible, before the whole screen was full of the autogenerated forced spam rp from the mages.

In the end it was quite impossible to do any rp with sentences longer than three words, everyone was just running around and str-klicking on the appearing whatevers or casting the hell up and down again upon them (without any #me).
And to make it complete, it somehow submitted the feeling, to have read, played or heard the story a felt thousand times.

At the pg-side I believe that my little Ssar'ney would have gained more money, items or skills if I would have spent the two hours the quest was lasting on continiuous killing of golems or red skeletons. If there would have been someone else, I even would have had better rp.

As long as there are such enormous masses of characters at quests, noone is able or willing to keep up a bit or rp or realistic "fear" from his char. That also includes myself.
So my "constructive" suggestion is to make quests where noone wants to destroy the world and not more than ten chars at once are at one place.
It also would be nice if there would be no granted skill-and itemgain from the quests, so that there maybe the rp would be what everyone is after.

Don't take this wrong, your english is fantastic, but sometimes your characters accent makes it impossible to understand what you're saying, sadly the majority of people will only answer something that they can easilly read.

When your in a crowd, (particularly during a battle) you seriously cant expect everyone to react to everything you do or say. Thats just bizzare, and the pace would become a standstill. Quests like the one in briar are.. to be honest.. very uninteresting for the majority because unless you literally force you character into the quest.. which looks rude.. you are going to be ignored. My advice to people (particularly those not interested in pging or loot) is to stay away from these situations with large numbers of people altogethor. You will just find it frustrating and uninteresting.

Some quests are for fighting and getting treasure.... *rolls eyes*

This only exists at Illarion, guys. Snap out of it. Sometimes it's fun to kill the critter, save the day, and make bank. =P

I warned ahead of time that this last quest was a PVM quest for badasses.
