Make Your Own Book!

Post by abcfantasy »

For the ease of everyone (hopefully), you can now use the following link to create a book to be used IG:

http://illarion.org/~abcfantasy/us_bookgen.php

If the javascript is not working, use the following: http://illarion.org/~abcfantasy/us_book ... ?no_opti=1 (thanks Merung)

- The page is for now in English only (may be translated in german too).
- All books need to be written in both english and german.
- Maximum of 250 pages per book.
- Maximum of 200 characters per page (it won't let you type any further).
- Once you click Generate Script, a new window will open with the code. PM the code to me, and in that PM, you may include any more information you wish (Ex. where you want the book to be, etc...).
- Any questions, ambiguities, confusion, bugs, etc... you can reply here, PM me or contact me via MSN.

-------

Now that it should be somewhat easier to write books, I wish to ask people to create books for each craft, describing what the craft is, what basic tools are needed, how to craft, etc... enough to get a new player get a basic idea of how it works. Carpentry, Lumberjacking and Fishing are done.

Can specific books be written for specific areas of Gobaith also? For instance one of the elves of Tol etc?

Looks great, thanks! The word wrap for graphical books ingame is done automatically?

PS: Add to the "Instructions" what to do with the script (PM to you etc.).

I've read this ;). I was asking because in some available books the word wrap seems a bit wider that the graphical page, IMO.

Yes you can, click on the link, write a book and click "make code" and there you have your example. It's not rocket science.

If i put a monster name in the comment side, could i get a picture of that monster? Or does that only work for items?

Only for items, sadly. Then again, items include trees, walls, etc... (not just items you can pick up)

Here's a treat for the one who stickied the post (finally):

Translation of the first post:

http://illarion.org/~abcfantasy/us_bookgen.php

Could you make the input box for your content a textarea, instead of one line only? I want to be able to see what I type.

EDIT

Even better, make a textarea, and let a script decide how many pages it should be.

Aye, that's a problem I've had with scripting books too. If it cut off at 200 immedeately, and began a new page, it'd be very helpful.

The problem is, that would not always be desired. What if users want to end the sentence at the end of the page, and not have an incomplete sentence (as most of the current books are)? Or they want to write only a few words and then start a new page (ex. titles/chapters/etc...)?

In addition to that, there might be a problem with the two languages, since they would have different lengths and thus different number of pages.

If you are bothered writing in a single text box because of text going "out" of the box (in which case you can still see the text by using normal scrolling keys such as left/right arrow keys, home, end, etc...), you can use a site such as http://www.javascriptkit.com/script/scr ... ount.shtml to write a page, making sure you don't skip the 200 character limit. Then copy the text and paste in the text box.

Its not really something you'd put in a book is it?

Of course it's acceptable, why not? Anyone can write a book. There's no magical forces stopping you.

Now where the book would be stationed is another story.

Does it even work?
I tried it now with Opera, Firefox and even *shiver* Internet explorer, no matter what buttons I click, it all stays the same, it generates no scripts, there is no comment box, it won't let me set any pagenumber, it stays with the first page only and the only thing that even seems to work is the reset button, so is it just me or has everyone these problems?
