It's fantasy based on realism. That's why pigs don't fly and humans don't shoot arrows with swords tied to them for 1000 meters. Or shouldn't. Fantasy is for the fantasy elements and not the realistic elements. Magic is reality in illarion. Oh this is all on the main page if you care to read it under Realism as the topic, I believe.
There are, currently, fish farms for fish such as trout, where basically they just keep a bunch of trout blocked off from the river and feed them.
They do this for a number of reasons, but it has been found that the fish raised this way are inferior to wild fish.
I don't see any reason that there should be fish farms, however, as in the age Illarion takes place in there are enough fish in the rivers/ocean. No reason for it I can see.

@Niniane Well put.
@Separdum Hmmm the people int he medieval ages actually did make fish farms and there was a necessity and demand and there would be in illarion if they were possible. Its all very simple one word: convenience. I agree fully with you, fish bred in fish farms are inferior to wild fish, but then again that word comes up that is so important to us humans :convenience. What would you as a fisherman/farmer rather have? 5 excellent quality wild fish that took you a day to get or 500 fish farm bred fish that are of not so good quality but took you less time? Most farmers/fisherman for the sake of money would opt for the latter option hence the demand and necessity for fish farms.
@Hermie Glad I got through to you
. It really is hard sometimes to see the meaning behind what something is saying when you must read what they are saying...I understand fully.

Hmmmm....Separdum I see your perspective. If you see the "fish farm" as a permanent building then certainly it should cost a lot as you say, and I agree fully with you. My proposal though was a bit along the lines of a non permanent farm that a farmer could make with a failure/success chance using a skill. Something like what farmers do now with peasantry and creating "farms" of plants that grow and can be reaped but disappear after a while. Except a "fish farm" would be on the river/sea etc., but other than that much like the current "plant farms". The graphic could be a bunch of fish gathered on the water with a "net-wall" around them...something along the lines. Hope I have explained myself a bit better.
why not just a fishfarm, made by a carpenter, you could set in the water and would after 15min rot away? i can make the model if you give me some idea about it

@Gro'bul I doubt "making fish farms" would fall under carpentry skill. A new skill might have to be made.
@Separdum You didn't seem to in the way that you said that you would expect a fish farm to cost 500 ingots etc. etc. Buildings cost that much and I tried to explain how what I was proposing was not a building.

Bumbol, I'm afraid that you don't follow our discussion at all...A fish farm would definitely not be a bunch of fish in a little glass bowl. The fish in the glass bowl would be pets...A fish farm would be on a larger class for commericial use by a farmer who wishes to make a profit. A farm is generally a big group of living organisms that are grown/breeded by a farmer to be sold for a profit. Therefore, a fish farm as we are using would basically be a big group of fish in some large body of water (river/sea) that are caged and allowed to multiply. The products of that fish breeding would be sold by the farmer for a profit. I hope you now have a clearer idea of what we are discussing.
cow raising
it would be fun and profitable to raise cows, and then they can implement that you can make butter and cheese and yogurt, etc.
I havent read this whole post, but this might not be up here, and I want to say it before I go to bed. domesicating animals could also be a skill, like when you "feed the pig grain" maybe you should have to feed it several times, depending on how good you are it. just a thought, later everyone!

I know i am new and do not have much expierince in the matter but what if you built like a tank 'ex. A swimming pool of sorts' on land filled with water then had to get a couple of fish in there for easier convienence.
@Hades : i dont believe this will bring animal theft/killing because it would be much harder to get into a stable/fish farm than to go into the wild and get your own pig or other animal
