Training

Post by Shingo »

Shingo could tell how hard Brice was trying. He has got determination, he will be great one day....

Brice's hours of practice were evident. Where he couldn't hit a target only 15 feet away before he now hit with ease. Just one last test to determine if he is ready....

He explained to Brice what he needed to do in order to obtain his first bow. Shortly after he threw a wooden plate into the air. Looking toward Brice, he saw how quickly he loaded and how effortlessly he had hit it. His form was a little off, however his instincts were exceptional.

After a short discussion Shingo decided it was time to take Brice to his favorite training spot: The northern woods. Shingo slowly opened his depot and carefully pulled out a new, wrapped bow. He held it out to Brice and said "With this bow, you are now a true Archer. Use it well, train with it. Make it so familiar with your body you know longer even have to think to use it" With a smile and a nod the headed north.

A short survey of the woods and they found exactly what they needed. A goblin bandit alone. Mutters of devouring human flesh and killing could be heard even from afar. He told Brice to take care of him in any way he saw fit.

This is it he thought.

The moment had arrived that he would put all his dedication and practice to work so that he would make his instructor proud. His assignment was clear, the goblin creature he was to take out leaned passively against a tree as he devoured a bloody chunk of meat. The stench of the creature was strong, so strong that the smell no doubt ably could reach Brice through the several yards between them.

Here it goes.

With a steady arm he reaches for an arrow and readies his bow. The breeze is soft and he can feel its cool touch across his face as he pulls back the string. With careful hands and hopes for precision he then releases his grip and sends and arrow sailing toward the putrid beast.

It misses, with a loud *thud* the arrow stick into the trunk behind his target.

No.., he thought. Its over ..I missed.

The creature instantly notices the arrow and with a series of grunts, hoots, and shrieks, raises its dagger and dashes towards Brice. Brice quickly grabs for another arrow though during the rush, his fingers fumble and the arrow falls to the ground. The distant between Brice and the creature has nearly vanished and it only seconds the goblin would be upon him. A last attempt is made as he manages to load another arrow this time holding it firmly.

*Swish*

The arrow is released and impales the goblin in the forehead stopping it dead in its tracks. Brice sighs as he lowers his bow and looks down at the twitching corpse at his feet. It was a messy and a very close call, though his assignment was complete. His target was taken care of.

As the goblin screamed and rushed toward Brice, Shingo had his arrow knocked and ready.

You got two more seconds Kid.

"Knock the arrow! Shoot him now!"

Just as he was about to let his arrow fly Brice managed to get his arrow off. It was a brilliant shot, but Brice had let it come far to close.

"Are you trying to get yourself Killed!? Didn't I teach you to take your time!? What did I say? Aim, steady your hand, and shoot between breaths! You were lucky this time Brice, don't rely on luck."

He did it though, he managed to take down that ugly beast. And by the gods that shot was beautiful. He didn't even panic after he missed. The kid will be great...

Shingo was feeling utter pride. He had to physical fight away the smile that was trying to emerge on his face. Brice had to realize that his life was in very real danger.

"You rush yourself like that again and I won't even knock my arrow next time! Just be glad you got off that lucky shot! If I wasn't here.... you may have been killed!"

Shingo shook his head and turned away, motioning for him to follow. As his face was no longer visible he smiled broader then he had in a long time. Great job Kid, I know that shot wasn't luck, you did great...

Brice listened silently as Shingo spoke, he understood that he deserved the scalding and paid heed to each of his words.

He had messed up and rushed into his situation which he often had the tendency of doing in various aspects of his life. Though now, he knew his weakness and could better work on it. Shingo finished his lecture and motioned for him to follow. Brice gives him a single nod, he then adjusted his equipment then followed aside him. As they walked he thought on the previous lessons they had and thought for a moment how much he had enjoyed and valued each of them. He continues aside Shingo eagerly awaiting the arrival of their next destination.

Not a word of backtalk. Good, he knows then, he learned.

Shingo led them south, through the dense woods.

I suppose after that incident we should head back to town. A bite to eat and some good dwarven mead should settle his nerves A little more was planned but we can save that for another day.

As they continued to progress, Shingo reminded him of the little aspects that could ruin a potential archer. "Remember, keep your arm locked. If its not you will shake. Keep the elbow up or you will misjudge the distance. Take into account the wind. Even the slightest of breezes will cause the arrow to move unexpectedly."

"Our advantage is the fact that we can take an enemy down before they even reach us, without any harm to ourselves. If they are close enough, a shot with a large arch isn't needed. It is a bit easier to judge and you have a much bigger error ratio. If they are far, but moving quickly, you may want to bide your time and wait until not much of an arch his needed, to guarantee a hit. If they are far then the arrow has to go all the way up, then all the way down. Even the slightest miscalculation will result in a miss. However, if you can become quick enough when knocking an arrow, then you have no need to wait."

Better let him take it all in, no need to get too intricate yet.

They continued to walk south. Every once in a while Shingo would point out how objects around them could be used to their advantage. "Just remember to be creative. Fighting is an art."

Throwing one of his older daggers toward the tree, he caught the edge of the arm between knife and trunk as a loud boisterous laugh escaped while the other man grimaced in pain, blood immediately flowing from his arm as he tried to remove the dagger. Walking over to him with a swagger, he quickly pulls the dagger out, hearing a groan of pain then a shout when part of his rum was poured over the wound as the smile that never reached his striking blue eyes continued on his face. Looking at the man, the smile finally turning to a smirk as he voices in an almost too calm, too controlled voice

Do what I say next time

... before turning back toward the fire. He looks around the camp at the faces of the other bandits then nods.

There are five of us, we will leave shortly, I saw signs of arrows in the forest, it will be an easy target

Brice continues along through the dense wood with his mentor at his side. An inquisitive appearance tends to strike his face as he asks the occasional question.

Shingo let me ask you..I often hear of skeletal beings, undead roaming these lands. Should I be faced with the situation of having bring one down, where on them would you suggest I aim? The skull I would imagin though with certain creatures such as the wolf I believe you have said it is best to aim directly for the chest.

Leaning past the tree with hand held back in a motion to stay still and quiet, he briefly glanced toward the man with the wounded arm. The sneer he gave to one of the men conveyed more then words ever could his icy distain when hearing the slight rustle of leaves made by the bandit as he changed bandages on the still bleeding arm. Turning his head back toward their target, he then held up his hand and upon hearing the voice of one, the hand made a slice across the front of the neck then pointed. The order to have no survivors was understood by all as en masse they ran toward their intended prey with daggers ready.

"Well you see Brice, the thing about skeletons is their inability...."

Shingo stopped short as he saw a group of men around only 20 yards away rush toward them. The hate in their eyes and the daggers in their hands gave away their intent quickly enough. With instinctual speed Shingo grabbed at the bow on his back and had it in hand within the second. A fraction of a second later Shingo's hand had darted behind his head, grabbed an arrow, and knocked it so it was ready for release.

"Halt! Stop now!"

Shingo could immediately tell they weren't going to listen. He could immediately tell he would have to kill them to survive. He released the first arrow. With blinding speed it soared through the air.

"Brice! Now's your time!"

Time to fight. Time to kill.

Birds scatter and the woods come to life with sound as the loud bandits make their charge.

Brice freezes in his steps, his heart skips as he realizes the danger that so quickly comes upon him. He hears Shingo’s words "Brice! Now's your time!" .Without a second thought he takes action. He readies his bow and nocks an arrow. Just before releasing he stops to take Shingo’s words into account. "You rush yourself like that again..." He takes a moment to adjust his stance, fortify the straightness of his arm, then lastly recheck the wind. All was aligned, he releases his shot and only moments after Shingo's arrow goes sailing, Brice's joins it.

A cry of rage is heard as the arrow goes through his shoulder, he momentairly stops until the lightening pain subsides before enouraging his men on at the same time attempting as best he could to follow. Blood appears to gush from the wound as one of his daggers drops to the ground, his hand unable to hold it. Gritting his teeth he mumbles to himself

Good riddance

....as the bandit with the wounded arm falls with an arrow clean through the heart. Unnoticed, another bandit swerves in his run after watching how quickly the bows were reloaded, headed deeper into the forest.

Thoughts were flowing through Shingo's mind a million per second.

I haven't taught Brice hand to hand yet.
I can kill one more, they are still far enough.
Shooting another arrow will leave him completely vulnerable.
Don't die, don't die.
Brice HAS to kill one, or we won't make it.
I wonder if Esme will miss me.
Four are left, one of which is can barely walk.
The guild must live on.

Shingo dropped his bow to the floor. Lightning fast he dropped to a knee while simultaneously pulling an slightly tainted green dagger from his boot and dropping one down one from his sleeve. He darted forward to engage one who had been slightly ahead of the others. With amazing speed he crouched low attempted to stab at the inside left ankle while sweeping up with his right hand, slicing anything in its path.

Brice immidiatly reaches for another arrow and pulls it back. It appeared as though he would get one more shot off before the bandits would arrive to Shingo.

"This is just like training he thought, these guys are like the moving plates I shot at and I can treat them the same"

He then takes aim and adjusts it a bit to predict where they will be when the arrow arrives. With a steady arm and more hopes for precision, he releases.

Slashing furiously the lead bandit grimaces as the blade from the man once holding a bow, slices cleanly through his skin, carrying two daggers he attempts to hit back, only to miss once as another cut is felt. He knew he got in two hits before his thoughts became muddled as a weakness hit him, looking closer at the blades, he speaks for the first time..

Poison!

..before turning to run only to sucumb to the poison as he falls. Another man on hearing the shouts swerves off into the trees only to get a dagger in the back as the leader, using his one good arm aims and throws. Still grimacing from the pain of the arrow, he reaches in his boot for another dagger mumbling...

You run, you die.....

...but his sentence is stopped abruptly when the fatal arrow hits. The air around him turns briefly still while the gleam in his pale blue eyes turns dull when without a sound he topples.

As the second dagger swept up and cut through thigh muscle, Shingo felt a dagger come down into his right shoulder deeply. Burning pain erupted as he tried to hold onto his dagger. Another blow came from the same side, and as he tried to parry, the dagger was knocked out of his hand and the blade grazed the right forearm, cutting it shallow. Shingo darted back afterward, with the next closest bandit in close pursuit.

Without notice, the engaged bandit had fallen after Shingo turned his back, however, a second had just caught up and was now in chase.

Shingo started to feel dizzy and weak after only a few short steps as a trail of blood followed his path. As the bandit started to close the distance, he felt an arrow whiz by, overhead. Unfortunately the arrow was aimed at the leader of the group instead of the bandit in pursuit of him, and hit him dead in the chest, dropping him to the floor.

One shot left...

Shingo turned and with his good arm, however his slightly less coordinated left hand, through the dagger straight toward the bandit.

Watching his leader fall, his gaze being momentarily distracted before feeling a sharp pain in his shoulder as the dagger goes straight through. With a groan of pain, seeing he was the only one left, the last bandit turns to run but not without one last throw of the dagger from his remaining good arm.

Shingo saw it coming, but his already slackened reflexes due to his blood loss did little for his reflexes. He turned away from the dagger, but nothing else.

This might be it...

Instead of the searing pain he was expecting in his ribs, he felt a hard thud. Looking down at the ground, he saw the dagger there. He realized that the daggers hilt had hit him, and that he was saved by pure luck. He looked toward Brice, a hurt look in his eyes. His shoulder still seared with a burning pain and was bleeding freely. His whole right arms was dripping blood, falling off his fingertips.

"Brice... Medico..."

Shingo stumbled forward and was saved from falling by a tree next to him.
