It must be driving the devs crazy to think about magic system.
Everyone wants this to be hard, but at the same time easy.
No one wants NPC teachers but then again no one wants players either.
Why not just screw the entire rune stones idea? Instead of needing all the runes, why not just make Magic a skill you can learn like a craft? The higher the level the more spells you can cast. And basicly all you need to start learning magic is a single point in it, which is gathered from a previous magician, however he doesn't even need to be good himself. Just have a single point in magic.

I'm tottaly agains NPC teaching magic/monster droppings - REALLY STUPID
I wonder why many other games do this "really stupid plain bullshit" and why it works out fine in other games. Just wondering, not trying to defend that idea. Illarion is somehow special, maybe that's one of the reasons.Xalliar wrote:
Enabling chars ot get runes through monster drops/shops etc. ist plainly bullshit, sorry for the hard expression.
Signed.
In Anarchy Online, it works like this: "Runes" (Nanos) can be bought in shops (limited stock, only few available, extremely high prices), looted (rare, due to the different levels and the high amount of "magical" classes, one can use only very few runes obtained this way) or bought / traded with other PCs. There are skills that make some classes able to craft runes, one has to invest a lot of skill points and money in order to do so, though. So, there are few rune crafters.

It is not easy to get the spells you want. But there are different methods. How hard it is to get spells can be adjusted by the creators of a game. Anarchy Online is some kind of future hack and slash game with some RP-elements, but it is very item- and level oriented. The basic game is free.Xalliar wrote:@Estralis: I do not know Anarchy online. Is it a real RPG like illaron or is it more a hack&slay like Tibia? Because, if it is more like tibia, it's nothing but logical that spells are easy to achieve there... Illarion is something absolutely different.
Well, that's the problem: 10% of the Illarion community means 1-2 of the players online. I doubt I'd be motivated to code stuff for a very small fraction of a rather small community. Just imagine, 4 schools of magic -> 2.5% of the Illarion chars will be priests / bards / druids / mages. How high is the chance to encounter such a char ingame?I agree, magic should only be available to those who the GM's gave the runes too. And other mages can have one or two runes in say 6 months. It is meant to be special and un-used by 90% of the community. If the developers wanted people to be mages they would have made the system user friendly. Cool
Hey, or was that a sarcastic comment?
Avalyon if you truely want to be a mage do as Nalzaxx posted in the Magic Discussion. Brown nose a GM or my idea would be to create a player quest named : Avalyon and the mystic library
Which is an adventure off yourself exploring the northern woods and finding a forgotten library which has all the long lost magic books which were stolen years ago from the library off trollsbane, these said books holding all the runes you need. The reward for finding the library be your character having all mage runes.
See simple

Im just going to post a no brainer before i leave my sarcasm from the board.
If you want to keep magery to those whom you think deserve it etc. Why not have designated teachers as you have now, and when people have learnt enough about a rune, have this teacher PM a responsible GM with the rune and character name, perhaps include a post from that character about his studies in the message, so the GM can allocate the rune to this player. This gives the teachers an oppertunity to roleplay and not powergame, and it gives students a hope off learning a Rune.
A teacher then cant take more than 1 student and teach runes which they dont have to spend 8 months working upon :p.
As i see it at the moment the system is truely '' arse ''.

I would love such a system. But then again, I already foresee lots of people who don't, so yeh.

I don't think it'd be very fair, if anyone gets the runes with a new character. I'm playing Luthor for about four months now and he didn't even learn ancient so far. Oh and if you really want a mage, you can rp some magic, without having runes. I remember a scene, when a mage in the tavern let a little doll walk and talk to everyone. That was kinda funny. Just think about some ideas, what you could rp and do it. But the rp-thing mustn't be more mightier then the runes.
I've asked practically every mage, warlock and necromancer I've met. I only got one response from Aokan and now he's lost his powers.Athian wrote:AlexRose12345678910 wrote:So how do evil and unliked characters learn magic?
dont' worry, that one should be solved very soon i believe.
oh and the answer is ask

I think a more realistic magick system would be best. A witch would first need to find his or her magick name, which is done through fasting and meditation. Then, you buy your ritual tools from another witch-an athame, a wand, a goblet or a bowl, a cauldron, crystals, candles, a pentacle, and other ingredients. The new witch also has to make his or her own Book of Shadows, by copying it down from another witch. Then, you have to find your own place to perform these rituals, and construct an altar. Finally, using things you have acquired, you can perform spells. Grimoires could hold more information on specific types of rituals (like glamours, protection spells, divination, healing and death spells.)
Athame = ritual blade, usually a dagger.
Pentacle = A disc with a star on it.
Grimoire = Supplemental spell book.
Book of Shadows = A witch's journal.
Oh, and DON'T FLAME ME. I'm just sharing an idea to add a realistic magick system.

that is just the wiccan way of magic, different cultures practiced magic differently, i see no problem with the rune way of magic its just learning that is a bitch right now...an academy might make it easier to find a teacher, but it will not help the teachers any if they cannot teachDeinarious wrote:I think a more realistic magick system would be best. 1. I am not inactive, Stephen. thanks for telling that nonsense about me. But currently I CAN'T teach any magic because of the magic system.
2. there is already work on it to change that so that we mages can teach finaly magic to others. but that work still needs time to be developed. Until it isnt finished we still can't teachmagic, so the academy is "offline" until that new way of teaching got finished. be patient.
there is no need to continue this discussion, since a solution is already there and in work.
