Intelligence
How great is the effect on intelligence and being able to learn. Is it extremely important to have a high intelligence to be able to learn your trade easier?

I think it does. Not that I can speak up for the techie side of Illarion here, but more or less as a "test" I have a character with maxed out combat stats and zero anything else, including intelligence, and he seems to learn slow. It could be because of this excessively slow skill gain that was just recently implemented, or it could be because he has little if any intelligence attribute.

That's why I prefer characters with well rounded attributes. So if any changes in the game occur, my guy will never be shorthanded...he can do a little bit of everything.
Delanroth, for example, has decent enough skills and equipment to take on average characters. He may never be the best hand to hand fighter out there because the guys with the maxed combat attributes can beat him. But hey, no big deal. There's more to being a good contract killer than ctrl+clicking, as I've learned from Konstantin. He'll also be well versed in poisons and distance weapons, maybe even start a "group" to help him along the way.
While I think the skill gain rate is a little bit on the BS side, just remember that anybody can make up for their character's weaknesses with a little bit of your own will power and finding ways to do things better.
