Frankly, I don't care what someone chooses to do with their character, as long as they can make it believable. And after reading all of this, if anyone can pull it off, Dave can. I can't wait to see this orc in game and tug on my beard in amazement as he, dare I say it, impresses me. Go on Dave, rock me to my Dwarven core.
And as far as the concept of a "smart" orc, for lack of a better description, if there were not manipulative, cunning, and cerebral (yeah, I said it, cerebral) orcs floating about, then there would be NO organization whatsoever. There would be no orc leaders. There would be no orc guilds or clans. There would be no group attacks.
I seriously doubt that a single orc running into an encampment would strike too much fear in the hearts of those sequestered there, regardless of however menacing he, or she to be politically correct, may be. It takes some type of organization and planning for a group of orcs to overrun another group.
And if the orcs respond to antagonists with any form of response other than bludgeoning them to death, then they aren't exhibiting "neandrathalic" behavior. And therefor, they need someone to manipulate them and "stir" them into cooperative effort.
Dave's character could very easily fit into that role, even though he's not looking to step into that position.
