Proposed alignment.

Post by Sam »

Since the server appears to be down I thought I would take the time to look over the development pages again. I see you plan to add an alignment element to the game. I have thought about this myself but ran into a problem of "kill evil 'creature/character' become more good". The problem is that of intent. Did you kill the evil thing for a "good" reason or for a selfish "evil" one? I wondered how you have approached this or what other people here think. I don't expect you to give away any trade secrets I was just wondering. It sounds an interesting idea anyway.
Sorry if it's the wrong place to put this.

There's a proposal board where you could've posted this, but it'll be moved there later anyways.

In Illarion, I don't see any way around that problem with a multitude of reasons to kill something. Maybe in a "hack/slash" type game, you might do something like: the player gains good alignment when you kill an evil monster, only if you don't pick up the spoils, which is at least a minimal indication that the kill was not for material prize. Maybe give some extra alignment points for killing a monster that was already in the process of attacking someone else, and never "targeted" you.

Otherwise, there's no other real way to get around intent, unless you can read people's minds.
