Roman remnants

Post by Gro'bul »

Medival ages are after the fall of the roman empire, I think that armors and weapon styles would still be floating around. So I thought maybe one sided plate for lightness , lorica segmentata for easier movement, a better shortsword the gladius, leather skirting for lighter leg protection.

Do we have spears in this game? I mean i know we have javalins, but spears, where it would be a 1 handed weapon that goes 2 spaces.. if we had that we could make a phalanx...

Spears are only thrusting weapons in one hand, and throwing with one hand.

they cant be swung effectively, if spears were implemented, I'd make them two handed.

The phalanx was a very successful organized attack from the Greeks. It was the best attack until the Romans made the Legions. And the phalanx was of course 8-16 men lined up, then 8-16 men behind them frontline. All the men carried shields in 1 hand and spears in the other. It was a bristling wall. And was very strong.

Its an idea, and if this isn't earth than why do we have everything refered to "reality" as the reality we know is earth.

Realism is different then planes.

In medevil times vikings thought there were 9 planes or worlds or something similar located on a "tree of life" or so.

Planes are different, so are game worlds, its the game mechanics that should basis reality, otherwise illarion would be called matrixon.

Now to grant

The phalanx (which is typicly a great unit, not roman) Was successfull in battle with spears, because the second lines threw them, while the first line would use them to thrust and the shields to parry, it was very slow moving, very cumbersome, but still very effective.

I know it was Greek and not Romans, the Greeks made the phalanx, then Romans crushed the phalanx with its Centurys and Legions. And I am not so sure about the 2nd line throwing the spears tho.

There is historical documentation supporting my post, true also is, why would their be more then one line, if spears were only used as close quaters weapons?

To fill in the spots where other soldiers fell, like reserves. And yes, it was a slow moving attack, but it was great against the Persians.

True, but also, the first line was designed to NOT fall.

The greeks valued their soldiers, the lines were well protected, that often many did not die in battle becuase of the design of the lines.

In battle the front lines used half their shield to protect the man beside him better while keeping his spear arm open, this was an incredibly hard to counter attack without many men wielding greatswords.

I was brainstorming last night and thought maybe when racial armors and such came about that roman things like this could be human unique items?

Not one post in this thread from you has been on topic, if you want to start a thread about ancient greek, african, aboriganees or whatever do that. IF you have played the game, you know it is from a medival european perspective. The proposal board is to give ideas to the creators and obviously add suggestions to the current proposals if relevent. Does asia, africa, australia, north and south america appear to be in europe? Sure there are some influences, like shuriken ingame, but those places are not in nor have ever been in Europe, if you think otherwise please debate this with yourself in a dark corner.

Actually, if you pay attention.

Europeans (Vikings) Visited north america far before 1400 someodd when chris columbo did.

Secondly, the Romans were in Africa, Mediterean and small areas of Chinese/Mongol territory, not to mention siberia and most of modern day UK, so really it was on topic, considering, indirectly to time periods involved and the fact that the romans occupied much of this territory.

Also, Illarion is not just a European setting, if it was to be so biased, I wouldent play it. Some things are not integrated, or integrated YET for the work involved by the programmers and artists, not because of your persception, the community doesent think like the world revolves around you.

ROME doesent EXIST in the illarion game world, much like trolls bane doesent exist in the Atlantic ocean, get that right.

The creators can decide to have roman BASE weapons, but to name them upon the roman culture would be quite contreversial to the already established fantasy world.

And by the way, is ABORIGINAL, NOT ABORIGANEES I hope you won't insult me like that again, yankee.

Just as quick note:
Rome did not have territory in siberia or china. In middle east yes, but not in mongolia or china.

You have no authority to state this, nor any official sources to prove this.

Moonsilver states people fled from the mainland to islands, it doesn't say the mainland's name, oceans, so forth.

According to your prospective, bananas would not be called bananas, personally I think that would be kind of fun naming them Waldopuns or something. Perhaps renaming weapons would help, but logically it is not only possible but very proboble a sword shorter than a normal sword length would be called a shortsword rather than a swooshermabob or a uberfoot.

It is possible for two people on other sides of the world to think up the same thing. There are so many likenesses one can only assume the people of this place think as medival europeans, as that is the only other thing we can compare it to.

By the way, yankee isn't an insult anymore, they win alot of world series. :P

Actually, moonsilver does.......

Eventually fleeing from a mighty foe, the Elder Gods came to this world, giving it the name “Illarion”.

Name of this world: Illarion
The first city, Nabranoo, was founded, a high court of the Gods. Other cities followed, as the races bred fast.
Non existent earth city
The continents were devastated in these wars and in the final battle, leaving the islands around to be the only places where people could live. After that, all Gods, including Moshran, swore an oath never to fight against each other personally any more.
I live in that place called Canada, its rather larger then an island.

At least it will remain so, until you damn southerners bomb us to for no reason, except having a french prime minister.

Illarion doesent have Gladiators (Thus no reason to name Gladius, it would be kind of stupid because to our characters, it would be named after an emotion)

A sword called gladious? does it make death happier?

Lorica Segmenta........oooh, must be some strange elfish

(Of course elfish is very different the roman/latin to begin with)
