Have one major attribute for each major activity, acting as the current main attributes would.
Have a number of subattributes that give neat bonuses for each major one you want to enforce customisation on.
And, if possible, show the math to the player while fiddling with the attributes. (Have to admit that I did not yet dug into any relevant code.)
I'll make a simple example:
4 (not too aptly named) Majors and for the Fighting elements of this simplifiaction:
- 180 Points to be spent on Major (Scale of 10-100)
180 Points to be spent on each Group of Minors (Scale of 10-100)
Fighting- Might (+additional base damage)
Sharp Senses (+Hitchance)
Steadfast (-Damage taken)
Vigilance (+Parry chance)
Constitution (+Regeneration)
- Endurance (- hunger gain from gathering)
Strong Back (+ work speed while gathering)
... and so on
Mysticism - Might (+additional base damage)
Why?
It would solve the the two main problems of the attributes I see: Unclear effects of the attributes and the difficulty to offer specialisation for fighters.
I had a pretty lengthy list of unpleasant examples from the current state of the game, which I felt bloating this. Can add it back if needed.
In the end it would not be all that different from what we have now. Just easier to understand and allowing more customisation. At least that´s what I think.
Opinions, rotten tomatoes?

Für die, die kein Englisch mögen:
Was?
