Updating Java!

Hallo,

gestern wurde die neue Version von Java, für die Allgemeinheit freigegeben. Die neue Version hat die Versionsnummer 8.
Es gibt in dieser Version besonders mit Blick auf die Geschwindigkeit einige Verbesserungen. Und es gibt jede Menge neues Spielzeug für die Java Entwickler (also für mich ). Auf diesem Grund würde ich gern die Version von Java die aktuell mit dem Client mit ausgeliefert wird von Java 7u60 auf Java 8u25 ändern. Das hat allerdings einige Nebeneffekte die unter Umständen dazu führen das Illarion nicht mehr von allen gespielt werden kann. Der Grund dafür ist, dass die neue Java Version geänderte Anforderungen an das Betriebssystem stellt.

Ich gebe hier eine kleine Übersicht über Änderungen bezüglich der Anforderungen an das Betriebssystem. Bitte gebt in der Umfrage an, ob euer System weiterhin unterstützt wird oder nicht. Hier zählt jeder. Wenn nur eine Person meldet, dass die neue Version vom eigenen Computer nicht mehr unterstützt wird, dann wird das Update bis April 2015 aufgeschoben. Dann muss das Update allerdings durchgeführt werden, weil Oracle dann die Unterstützung für Java 7 einstellt. In dieser Umfrage sind nur Computer relevant die ihr aktuell benutzt um Illarion zu spielen. Bitte meldet hier keine Computer, auf denen Illarion im Moment sowieso nicht läuft.

Und nun zu den geänderten Anforderungen. Wenn euer Betriebssystem hier nicht aufgelistet ist, dann ist es entweder aktuell nicht unterstützt (z.B. Windows 2000) oder in beiden Versionen uneingeschränkt unterstützt (z.B. Windows 8 )

Windows

• Windows XP SP3 Funktioniert, aber nicht offiziell unterstützt von Java 7, funktioniert nicht mehr mit Java 8

Linux

• Ubuntu Linux 10.04 - LTS Nicht mehr unterstützt von Java 8
• Ubuntu Linux 11.04 Nicht mehr unterstützt von Java 8
• Debian Linux Squeez Nicht mehr unterstützt von Java 8
• Debian Linux Wheezy Nur der Entwicklungszweig ist noch unterstützt von Java 8
• Red Hat Linux 5.5+ Nicht mehr unterstützt von Java 8 (keine JavaFX Unterstützung)
• Oracle Linux 5.5+ Nicht mehr unterstützt von Java 8 (keine JavaFX Unterstützung)

MacOS X

• MacOS 10.7.3+ (Lion) Nicht mehr unterstützt von Java 8

yesterday a new version of Java was released to the public. The new version has the version number 8.
In this version there are a few improvements regarding the performance and there are many new toys for the Java developer (for me! ). For those reasons I'd like to perform a update of the Java version delivered with the Client from Java 7u60 to Java 8u25. How ever those may have side effects resulting in some players not being able any longer. The reason for that is that the new Version has changed requirements on the operating system.

In this thread I give you a short overview about the changed requirements. Please enter in the poll if you are still able to play Illarion after the update or if the support for your operating system was dropped in the update. Everyone counts. If only one players enters that he can't play any more after the update then the update will be delayed until April 2015. At this point I have to perform the update, because Oracle will drop the support for Java 7 at this point. In this poll only the computers are relevant that are currently used to play Illarion. Please do not report computers that do not run Illarion currently anyway.

Now the changed requirements. In case your system is not listed here, it is not supported right now anyway (e.g. Windows 2000) or supported in both versions without limitations (e.g. Windows 8 )

Windows

And at this point we are already able to conclude this poll.

There won't be a update to Java 8. (No new toys for me ). But please do keep in mind that this Update will happen once the support of Java 7 by Oracle runs out. So by that time you need to update your system to keep playing Illarion. End of April 2015 is the current set deadline.

Hallo,

ich muss dieses Topic wieder einmal hochziehen denn es ist April. Und April 2015 ist aktuell gesetzt als End-of-Life (Keine Sicherheitsupdates mehr) von Java 7. Alles an Sicherheitslücken was ab dem nächsten Monat in Java 7 auftaucht wird nicht mehr geflickt.

Daher werde ich planmäßig im Laufe des Mai das Update auf Java 8 durchführen, mit allen Folgen die im ersten Post stehen.

I have to bump this topic because it is April. For Java 7 April 2015 is marked as end-of-life. So any security issues that appear in Java 7 after April will not be fixed.

This means that I will perform the update to Java 8 as planned over the course of May, with all effects mentioned in the first post.

We get some crash reports related to OpenGL that suggest people are trying to run it on machines from before 2005. It makes me uncomfortable to imagine how terrible that experience would be.

One last reminder on this one. In the course of the updates of next month the update to Java 8 will be done.

Time to get rid of your Apple II, KC 87 and your PET 2001.
