New player survival manual

Post by Banduk »

Just an idea:
Each new Player find in the belt a 'Survival manual' with the most important commands.

I know it is mixing ooc and IG but it might help to hold brand new people.

My proposal: (Deutsche Fassung existiert natürlich auch!)
Survival manual
A helping hand for your steps into our world
Nobody can survive as long as he or she does not accept the help of others.
((This is a short description of some basics of Illarion.
We play together not against each other!
You are not the character you are playing!
Don’t hesitate to ask any player if there is any question.))
Chatting
A shut mouth catches neither flies nor friends or enemies.
((Return starts and stops chat mode.
Try >#wThis is a secret.< to whisper. Understandable up to 2 tiles.
Try >#sHelp, a murderer!< to shout.
Try >#me nods< to show emotions.
Try >#i< to introduce yourself the chars next to you.
Try >((…))< to talk out of your character. Here the person behind the character speaks.))
Moving
You will survive as long as you are faster than your enemy.
((Left mouse key, WASD or Numpad moves your character.
Turning works by Numpad und ALT key.
Running with left mouse key or Numpad and ALT GR key))
Inverntory
Some people carry everything with them. But these people can’t be rich.
((Try >CTRL I< or bag button in right lower corner to open inventory.
Try >CTRL B< or bag in inventory to open backpack.
Double click yellow chest to open depot.
Move items by drag and drop.
To divide stacks hold shift key while drag and drop.))
Fighting
Live is an endless fight. Final peace you will find once you are dead.
((Right click to target starts and stops fight.
NPC loose the focus on you if you move.
Illarion is neither a shooter nor a fighting game.))
Shortcuts
Shortcuts make life easier but the long way is the real art.
((User interface
B Bag
C Skills
Q Quests
I Inventory
ALT GR Show names and health of all visible characters
Talk
#me Emote
#w Whisper
#s Shout
#o OOC
#i Introduce yourself
!gm GM message
!what Show position
Walk
Keys WASD Main directions
Arrow keys Main directions
Numboard Main and intermediate directions
ALT and key Character turns without walking
ALT GR and key Character runs
Miscellaneous
P Plunder
Pick up everything from ground next to your character.
Mouse
Hold left Follow mouse pointer
Left click Properties
Left double click Use item / Walk to spare tile
Right click Attack
Shift mouse Split stacks
))
Crafting
The richest people are master crafter.
((Mining resources: Stay before the resource and double click the right tool in your hand.
Primary processing: Stay before the stationary tool and double click the stationary tool.
Higher processing: Stay before the stationary tool and double click the tool in your hand.))
Towns
Cadomyr
Town of honor
Earls, baroness and knights should feel well settled here.
Preferred crafts: Fisher, gold smith, gem cutter, glass blower
Galmair
Town of money
Smiths, merchants and miner prefer this settlement
Preferred crafts: Mining, blacksmith, stone mason, brick making
Runewick
Town of knowledge
Scholars and there students found enough libraries around.
Preferred crafts: Farming and food production, wood processing, candle maker

I don't like the idea of having this as an actual item. I prefer a button or something in the client leading you to a site with those tips.

Well, I suppose an in-game menu with the options for the client and a help file integrated in that like you can usually read the controls in a controls changing setting or whatever like in most games?

I have to agree with the others, a "help" key would be awesome rather than an ingame book.

#me actually shows an action performed by the character, that can be an emotion that flits across his or her face, but I tell new people to focus on something another person can see.

I'm not sure what ALT GR is to show names. I mean, I know what key you are intending, but reading that, I would be clueless. I usually just say the right ALT key. Maybe you have a fancier name? *grins*

The last one, "ALT GR and key" for character to run, "and key" I'm thinking you mean directional key? Is that correct? Does the word directional need to be added or is it clear enough as is?

Overall, I think this is a really great concept and hope it can and will be added to enhance the experience for our newer players.

The right Alt is ALT GR on the US and International keyboard layouts. So yeah for most of the people on Illarion it is an actual key.

A few corrections/additions/whatever:
Corrections and additions in red, comments in green, blue just replaces the potentionally misleading >< stuff. This would have been a lot easier to do in an online document by the way.

Survival manual

A helping hand for your steps into our world.

Here are some examples of non standard speech:
Type
#wThis is a secret. to whisper. Understandable up to 2 tiles away from your character.
Type #sHelp, a murderer! to shout.
Type #me nods. to show emotes (actions and stuff others can see, hear, smell, etc.).
Type #i to introduce to everyone within two tiles from your character, so they can see your character's name.
Type #oHow do I ... ? to communicate out of character.
Type ((…)) to talk out of character with everyone on the screen. Here the person behind the character speaks.
We use double brackets to indicate out of character text on role play forums too.))

Moving

You will survive as long as you are faster than your enemy.
((Use the left mouse key, wasd or numpad to move your character.
Turning on the spot can be done by holding the left alt key and pressing wasd (combinations like alt+wd for turning east) or Numpad.
You can run either with the mouse, just like walking, but with the cursor further away from your character or by holding ctrl and using wasd or the numpad.))

Inverntory

Some people carry everything with them. But these people can’t be rich. Why not? Money has no weight anymore. Besides, not all chars are supposed to be rich. I'll try to think of some better line for this.
((Press i or bag button in right lower corner to open inventory.
Press b or double click the bag in your inventory to open backpack.
Double click the yellow chest to open your depot.
Move items by drag and drop.
To divide stacksof items, hold a shift key while you drag and drop.))

Fighting

Life is an endless fight. Final peace you will find once you are dead. This totally contradicts the statement at the end of this section.
((Right clicking your target starts and stops fight.
NPCs often lose the focus on you if you move.
Illarion is neither a shooter nor a fighting game.))

Crafting

The easiest way to earn a steady income is by learning a craft.
((Gathering resources: Stand next to the resource and double click the right tool in your hand.
Primary processing: Stand next to the stationary tool and double click the stationary tool.
Higher processing: Stand next to the stationary tool and double click the tool in your hand.))

Towns

Cadomyr
Town of honor

Runewick
Town of knowledge
Scholars and their students find enough libraries around.
Preferred crafts: Farming and food production, wood processing, candle maker, tailor

Summary of Controls

Shortcuts make life easier but the long way is the real art. This section doesn't need any ic comment at all. Pressing keys is a purely ooc action.

Text commands:
#me - emote
#w - whisper
#s - shout
#o - ooc (out of character)
#i - introduce your character
!gm insert text here - send a message to the game master team
!what - shows position coordinates and tile information

Movement:
Hold left mouse key to follow the pointer.
wasd (and combinations wa, as, sd, wd)
arrow keys (and combinations like with wasd)
numpad
Hold ctrl to run.
Hold left alt to turn on the spot.

Miscellaneous:
Double click with the left mouse key to use items.
Right click to attack.
Hold shift to split stacks of items per drag and drop.
Hold right alt (alt gr on some keyboards) to view names and health of all visible characters.
i - opens the inventory
b - opens the bag
c - shows the character sheet
q - shows the quest log
p - pick up all items within one tile from your character

If this is in-game then you could do right alt or alt gr depending on the detected keyboard settings.
Furthermore Inventory instead of Inverntory.

Nice help for the rest of the document and you could always make an online document ;)

Whatever keyboard you have, you will have at least one of these keys. I see no issue with that as long as both are mentioned.

As for that one typo I missed, CORRECT THAT IN YOUR OWN QUOTE, DAMMIT! I WASTED HOURS OF MY LIFE GOING THROUGH ALL THAT ALREADY!

Its neater if you can set that up since you can detect keyboard settings anyway.

Also I have people to do that for me. Like you.

I'd like that option as well cause that's what everybody expect.
But the point is: I belive the IG book would be much faster to realize, that's all.
Based on my personal experience with new player, more than 50% come into troble with control within the first few minutes and resign. Maybe these potential player would give Illa a try, if there is any help that could be called without talking to anybody.

Maybe we could put this helpfull information online on the homepage and ingame?
So not only newbies can look it up (in their ig-book), but others as well. I didn't know you could be running by pressing a key... :/

I don't mind mixing ig and ooc here, such a book would be helpfull for new players. I do not think this item would disturb the old players.
Homepage would also be helpfull, but there are people never reading manuals.

I agree with Banduk here. Many new players don't want to talk to us first thing. Don't know the reason and I hate to speculate. Having somewhere for them to go, where they can "figure it out for themselves," could, potentially, save new players from quitting right away.

Yes, the book would be easiest to get into the game right away. Could we put a timer on it, making it rot after a certain period of time?

why not just have a fixed manual on a desk to read in noobia just before they enter the gates to the various realms ?

Because you can't go back to noobia to re-read it. I have gone without playing this game for some long periods of time in the past and had to relearn the controls again. Having it as a book should cause no one any problems. It just is a reference to the game controls and basic functions of the game. It would make new players introduction to the game much easier. Also an IG drop down menu would also work but the book may be easier and quicker to do.

I don't understand why an obscure book would be more helpful than a button having "Help/Controls" as a description as part fo teh GUI.

My point exactly.
That is, I would like an in-game menu with the options anyway.

The book would be always the second (or third or whatever) choice.

GUI button: Usability - best; Time to relization - very long; Recouces - Blocked by a lot of other more important issues
IG book: Usability - medium; Time to relization - fast; Recouces - There are people willing and able to realize, no blocking of other issues
As is (nothing): Usability - None; Time to realization - None; Recouces - None

So why we should do any 2nd best solution without blocking other resources, if there would be a little chance to have the best in eterity? (Attention sarcasm! ;-) )

So can we get the book in game now and put the GUI button on the wish list?
