Some scratchmarks on the walls...

I see the broken iron pickaxe
I smell the sweet taste of freedom,
I hear whispers in the winds of silence.

I'm imprisoned in a prison mine
rolling around.
Desperately trying to get there;
where is there? What is there?

I awake, a cold sweat engulfing me.
I'm still
trapped.

We must go across the broad river
together into exile.

We are both healthy and strong
from the digging
and carrying of rocks
for their new halls.

The only escape
is the half mile across the swirling black waters.

We have whispered our plans
as we dragged stones.

We will rest when we reach the river bank
so as to be ready for the water.
We know how to angle through the currents
how to preserve energy so we can swim across the swift central channel.

These are the times
the late summer
when the flow is less

We can creep out unnoticed
on the night of the feast
when they
are dozy and distracted.

We will walk for ten hours through the night
across the uncultivated rock strewn plateau
and reach the cliff edge.

We will scramble down
using the trees and bushes to control our tumbling

but
this day
we do not descend.

The strip of forest between us and the river is ablaze.

We can still see beyond the river
some movement
a few people
maybe a boat
and
we can see well enough that the flames will not abate

these fires last for weeks.

There is no other way

there is no way forward

no escape

they will find us

so
we return of our own accord

to them

to the place
where we can never be together.

It has been done before
the hunting
the torture
of those others who have tried.

We thought we were different.

We cannot hide
we will not hide.
We stride boldly
to
stand silent and tall
before them,
to look them in the eye.

Let them do what they will.

They are all one.
The group does not think.
They have laid labels on us.

Pointing and shout.

We stand
haughtily
looking past them.

We are so strong
and have done what is right.

We reject their miserable xenophobia
and all that calls differences
foolish and dirty.

Our stillness enrages them.
They step close
shouting at our studied blankness
spitting in our eyes and down across our skin.

We have set our faces
like the fearsome death masks
of the famous poets.
We will not flinch.

The mean little sidekick
tears your hair in clumps,
he berates our madness
and celebrates the demise of your beauty.

The tyrant’s daughter
digs her fingernails into my cheek
and with my own blood
daubs names on my forehead.
She demands that I now acknowledge
that this blood
is just sticky foul matter,
as she mocks my farewell letter, my apologia,
the vigour and vision of the passion of blood.

They are savage and pompous
and corrupt our story
mangling it
to feed as a warning to anyone else who thinks of looking beyond the circle

Yet
I know
there are already whispers among the young
stories telling that we were dignified,
that our blazing eyes
withstood the tawdry accusation
which sought to sully our dreams.

They taped over my eyes
they sealed my mouth
they lead me away.

walls freshly painted white
unmarked
the floor, bleached wood planks
the space, a two metre cube,
one bare light bulb,
a narrow bed, a thin mattress
a yellow blanket

he sees no one but the guards

they do not look at him

each day they take him silently to stand in the corridor
handcuffed to the walls
as they clean the cell

he has never been any where this sterile

they are never hostile;
well trained to be mute and remote

he has no remorse

by their laws he is guilty
but
his acts were just the fervent acts demanded by his keen conscience
acts of choice
of love
of a chance to live
to be fully human

the language used at his trial
was honed to demonstrate
that he was manipulative
arrogant
disgusting

they did not tell him how long he would be here
or what had happened to her

at the beginning,
he had asked for pen and paper every day
but
they would neither listen nor speak
perfectly deaf and dumb

now
every morning
when he knows he will not be disturbed
he creates a few lines

slowly building and memorising a poem

each day he repeats the words he has learnt
trying to imprint them deeply
and then add new lines

he always thinks of her
she who had dared him
to rise above
the stifling rubric and ceremony
to challenge their neat, metronomic patterns

he fears for her fate
much more than his own

his heart is sore

for her

A note is left in your cell

Ohiyesa I hope you are well. During this time as you collect the resources you should meditate and understand there ways to get what you need without attacking citizens. Once you understand this and are free I'll show you what I mean

I want to run free,
free as a bird, free to soar,
free like the winding river, free to flow and move.

But,

These walls, they
they bind me,
they hold me tightly.

I want to traipse through the forest,
feel the branches on my skin,
the forest it, it is free to grow and sway in the breeze.

But,

These walls, they
they drain me,
they cling to me.

I want to be with you,
to be happy.

I don't want to be driven into a corner,
and left to rot.

My hands clench the cold steel,
these bars that make my personal hell.

My prison.

I want to be free,
not here.

The note is returned by arrow

Surrounded by emptiness,

Nurtured by isolation.

Mothered by loneliness,

Educated by limitation.

Alone in my confines,

Eyes that follow.

Do nothing but remind,

That I am hollow.

I find myself babbling,

To their emotionless masks.

And I find myself gambling,

On what they would ask.

On what they would say,

If lips could form words.

But, no, not today,

For they cannot be heard.

But, it all is in vain.

For, after all,

After all pleadings of pain,

They are, alas, only pictures,

On the wall.

Locked up in this cell of mine
Here to forever be confined.

In hell I live, sleep, eat, and cry,
Could it be that here I'll die?

How I got here I don't even know,
What did I do wrong? Please let me go!

I plead and beg, beg and plead,
For freedom! Freedom I so desperately need.

My jailer walks past, carrying the key,
I look and see that my jailer is me.

How could this happen? How could this be?
I look at me and I clearly see

Myself behind the bars, safe and sound
"You shall never again walk unbound

To do the damage, to create the pain
That touched so many. No, never again."

I finish my rounds, happy to see
My sole prisoner in this keep,

The prisoner that is me.

This is not my home.
I may say I am going home,
but where I really end up in,
is a condemned hell hole.

This is not where I belong.
A familiar room that I call mine,
four walls that enclose around,
each are all a lie.

I do not wish to be imprisoned.
My heart does not call for here,
but instead to an open field,
for only my freedom.

Let my heart go to him.
Where the embrace is warm,
letting me know how it is,
that this is my home.

Pretending everything is really okay
We chat and smile through every day
Building the walls of our prison

Around us we gather a glittering array
Bright things to soothe harsh reality away
Pretty comforts for our prison

But once in a while, every now and then
A harsh ray of light pierces the den
A disturbance in our prison

What enters is some knowledge of pain
A death, disease, some disaster, and then
The colours fade in our prison

But soon enough its submerged again
Within a consuming banality rain
We re-build the walls of our prison

We live our lives self-hypnotised
Justifying each and every step
That leads to our prison

We lick our sacred employers' feet
The supplier of all our worldly needs
Joint jailors of our prison

We gain the things that weigh us down
That seal our fate and means of escape
From our self-made prison

And in the end these safe safe, walls
grow terrifying and tall
And bar all hope of escape

And we see too late the truth of our room
While building a prison
We furnished a tomb

I long to fly free
To feel the wind
To taste The Sea
To escape this cold metal platform

I sing to have company
I talk to have food
Nothing I want is for me
It’s all for those by whom I’ve been imprisoned

Release me
I don’t belong in here
I am a spirit not to be tamed
Let me fly free

The free bird leaps
on the back of the wind
and floats downstream
till the current ends
and dips his wings
in the orange sun rays
and dares to claim the sky.

But a bird that stalks
down his narrow cage
can seldom see through
his bars of rage
his wings are clipped and
his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings
with fearful trill
of the things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom

The free bird thinks of another breeze
and the trade winds soft through the sighing trees
and the fat worms waiting on a dawn-bright lawn
and he names the sky his own.

But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams
his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream
his wings are clipped and his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing

The caged bird sings
with a fearful trill
of things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom.

They told me it's a cruel place.
I should keep my voices down.
They trapped me in this cage
Asked me to not flap my wings around.
Suffocated, I began to bleed
My words out on paper
Which now the world reads.
