Call for Screenshots

We are currently in need of numerous screenshots for future promotional purposes and/or whatever the developers wish to do with them. Each screenshot will preferably have the screen (obviously), a 150x75 thumbnail, and an english & german title. If you don't want to deal with the thumbnail or titles I can take care of that for you as long as the screenshot is posted.

Examples of good screenshots are the following:
  • Characters gathered in RP or for an event
    Interesting locales on the map
    Action (battle, crafting, etc)
A couple examples of new client screens are already on the web site:
http://illarion.org/illarion/us_screenshots.php#

1. When in game press the "print screen" button on your keyboard and this will act as a "copy" of the screen.
2. The copied image can be pasted into an image editor such as photoshop or even MS Paint. If you do not have one GIMP is a free image editor: http://www.gimp.org/
3. Crop the image down so that it is just the game screen and not anything in the background or the client's title bar at the top.
4. Save the image in uncompressed JPG format preferably.
5. It would be helpful if you did the thumbnail as well, so resize that saved image down to 150x75 and save it again under a new name (ex. imagename-thumbnail.png).
6. Upload the images to an easy uploader like tinypic or imgur: http://tinypic.com/ http://imgur.com/
7. Post your results below

Examples:

Alt+Print screen creates a screenshot of your client, only, that's more simple than cropping; however, I strongly recommend to use the fullscreen mode.

I also recommend you use the highest screen resolution possible, I'd prefer to have screenshots of only one resolution, but I assume this is not feasable. In any case, please, do not use 800x600, this looks horrible.

And still, there are just two up to date screenshots on the homepage... IMO, this is very, very important. The start page should show some screenshots, too! Select three good examples and show them to the players.

I'd say "class instead of mass"; if we have ten good(!!!) screenshots, it is much better than having a hundred bad screenshots. I derived some guidelines from an old post of mine:
  • All visible text has to be in english (the client, too!) OR german. No mixture, please. English is preferred
  • No "Someone" or unknown characters. Get an introduction from everyone around
  • Consider displaying full names (ALT GR) if the result looks good
  • Clear the chat box from OOC or useless dialogues
  • At least three characters/monsters/NPCs should be around
  • No crowded mass scene of 20 characters at the same spot
  • One character could say something remarkable, the speech bubble should "look good". No screen clustered with dozens of speech bubbles, please
  • Perfect spelling and grammar in text
  • There should be as much stuff around as possible - a building, a campfire, an item on the ground, different tiles,...
  • Show GUI elements like the inventory, skill display or quest log at will
  • The inventory should fit your race/gender/class
  • Take the screenshot in fullscreen mode or just make a screenshot of the Illa-window (ALT-print)
  • Use the highest resolution possible, fullHD is preferred (1920x1080)
  • When you set up a good scene, take more than just one screenshot (e.g. 5), varying e.g. avatar position, shoot avatars while walking, one character says something,...
  • No cutting or cropping of the screenshot, please!
  • Save the screenshot as png; NO jpeg, please! You may present a compressed jpeg here, but save the original png
  • If you show screenshots here, do so as thumb (e.g. use imageshack.us)

All visible text has to be in english (the client, too!) OR german.
This is a game with two languages, why hide it from the player? :|

Yes, but he doesn't say "hide the fact that we have two languages", he says "Make some screenshots that are entirely English and some screenshots that are entirely German".

Exactly - it just looks bad if you mix languages in one screenshot. Just imagine the text on the homepage is written in two languages, intermixed... Same for screenshots.

Same holds for the client settings; it should match the language one sees. No one hides the option to play in two different languages; instead we should show it to the players by providing screenshots in both languages! Think positively, please. If someone searches for a game that can be played in german, a german screenshot will have a good impact. An intermixed screenshot will have no good impact, that simply looks chaotic.

In the end - we still have just two screenshots.

You should save the original, uncompressed image as png, as described in the first post.

Edit: vilarion is right, use png

That is why you should save the uncompressed version to png, and not some jpg to png. Sending uncompressed full hd pictures over the internet is still (even today) questionable. So just go with the initial post ;)

Make screenshots with people actually wielding roundshield and spear, wearing an uniform of greek-ish helmets, no shirt or armor and short pants standing in rows.
We need spears as a close combat weapon, using color mixing staffs is lame in the long run

Do you have those as .png? The jpg compression makes them look... not so good.
