Hello yes, I don't speak German and am almost 100% sure that this isn't connected to what you are talking about at the moment.

But! I'm going to say this tidbit!

You are able to attempt to repair items that require no repairs. It will not consume material, it will not give you skill, but it will wait to tell you that you cannot repair the object without any benefit until after the full crafting cycle.

NEW QUESTION:

I have gemmed my hammer, and have 95 blacksmithing. The percentage it gives me is 12%. I should be able to repair level 100 items, correct?
I can repair a red dagger (level 100), but I cannot repair a drow blade, or flame/magical broadsword (whatever is level 100).
Am I misunderstanding, or is there some kind of error?

Hallo,

Opps, That's not so good.
It's already changed in the Glyph package.

hrm, strange
I tested drow blade and magical broadsword, both 100%, skill 90, 12% gems,
Both are repairable.
Could it be you don't have the items in your belt?

btw. I don't want to make items in hand able to repair because it would become quite tricky to avoid you repair a tool with that tool.

Dear all,

I see this topic being discussed intensively and controversially. I very much appreciate the discussion and encourage everyone to voice his/her opinion.

Player repairing was requested long ago and the effect of player interaction is obvious. From the discussion and some observations, I conclude the following:
  • It is not clear what exactly happens during "player repair"
  • It is not obvious what items can be repaired, what changes by repair and what materials will really be used
  • The difference between NPC repair and player repair is not visible and not clear
  • The aspects durability restoration and quality restoration are not separated and overlap
  • Wear on items is not really balanced concerning different item types (daggers/helmets/saws wear completely differently)
All in all, I very much appreciate that we have player repairing in the game. But we clearly need to work on this action being transparent and clear. Reading forum threads to understand what is going on cannot be expected from players. Also, it should be very clear when to go to a NPC and when to go to a player for repairing. I still think NPCs should mainly restore durability (at the cost of quality with a low chance for degradation) and players should mainly restore quality (at the cost of materials). Both ways should have comparable settings; e.g. both should offer to repair/restore the whole equipment and not one way just offering belt slots while the other offers the whole inventory. Such inconsistencies are really confusing for players.

This was the original ticket description, see http://illarion.org/community/forums/vi ... 00#p700800:
  • NPC repair stays like it is concerning cost and interface. Full repair costs 50 % of item.worth.
  • Each time an item is repaired, there is a chance to lose one quality point of the item. The chance scales with the restored durability (e.g. repair of 50 durability: 50/5=10 % chance. Numbers are for illustration, only). The amount of lost quality points is stored in a dedicated data value.
  • Items with 0 quality left get destroyed
  • Crafters can restore the lost quality points by a dedicates repair operation, up to the original quality but not beyond. This consumes the same materials as for crafting the item.
  • Restore operation takes the same minimum skill and time while it gives the same skill as crafting the item. It shall also use the same tools and the crafting menu.
  • In order not to confuse players, the restore action shall not be called repairing but restoring, improving or restauration.
  • Open point is if this operation restores all lost quality points or just one each operation
The implementation differs a lot from that. That does not mean it is better or worse but different. What puzzles me most is that you cannot repair all items in the inventory and that a random amount of items is used. I would rather like to see player restoration using the same material as to craft the item anew and a very low probability (how low is a matter of balancing) for a quality loss during NPC repair. Player restoration restores all lost quality points. So players know what materials are necessary and restore the item completely. With a low probability for degradation during NPC repair, the necessary materials for maintaining one’s items wouldn’t be higher than now. The only tricky thing left is to explain to players that player restoration is not normal repairing – because for that, using up the same material as for crafting would be a rip off.

One aspect to consider in the future is to allow players repairing the stuff of others in their inventory. This way, you do not need to give away your things. Double clicking a character should open a menu that allows to trade, offer to repair, inspect, report,… See http://illarion.org/mantis/view.php?id=11634.

Keep up the good discussion!

Estralis

Edit: It is also rather strange that you can repair items you cannot craft by socketing gems into the tool. Feels like a unnecessary perk that makes things even more unclear.

It is not that the option to repair isn't given. It will even let me begin the repair process. After the 3 minutes required however, a red tag pops up and says "You don't have the skill to do this."

Edit: JUST KIDDING. It's working now. I don't know why it was being weird before. I just remember it definitely said 'You don't have the skill to do this.' But it is not doing that any longer.

In any case, I like the system. It's taken a little bit of time to figure out and get used to. I think the potential for damage to a weapon should be reduced some, perhaps to 10% at a max. Or increase the chance of quality repair.

Overall though, I like it. I was concerned initially at what felt would be an extremely high cost to repair equipment, but the rate of material use is not as bad as I thought. I think some proper documentation can make this fairly clear.

Also was dieses Update angeht ...

Aber mal back to topic:

Sorry I want to investigate the issue further since we want to have it in a way, you can start a work only, if the necessary preconditions were given.

What I could imagine:
- The gemmed tool you had in hand when opening the crafting menu was changed against a ungemmed one before the repair started. Here the message is ok.
- You had a gemmed and an ungemmed tool in hand. For that case I fixed 2 month ago already something that might find a way into the game with the glyphs.
- I did anything wrong anywhere. Never forget that case!

There are multiple reports about an issue one could not repair an item, that was shown in the repair menu.

The reports say the message "Your skill is not high enough" is shown once the repair was finished.
That was a security belt and should never happen!

In every case the item was above the nominal skill and the necessary skill was reached by gemming the tool.

Sad to say, I wasn't able to reproduce the issue on any development or test system.
The best information I had was:
blacksmith =18, hammer with +12%, sword 30 and dagger 30 were repairable, axe 30 were not. All items were found, not player crafted.
Did I said, it worked for me?

I have no clue. There is not a single hint in the code, this could happen ... but it happened more than once.
To find the issue, it would be very appreciated if we can get as much as possible information:
- In which hand was the item?
- first repair in this dialog, if not what before
- item and tool: player crafted, found, starting quality and durability
- What else was in belt or hand or bag?
- Anything else, Turn the char, had a conversation, open/close bag, inventory ... I have no clue.

Feel free to send me the information as PM, not everybody need to know what's your skill or what's all in your bag or belt.

Thanks to Drugar I could identify the issue.
The good news: It was corrected while realizing the glyph magic already.
The bad news: We can roll it out with the glyph package only.
