Should I still be gaining weapon experience?

Hello,
Is anyone able to confirm which weapon level you must be to no longer gain experience from killing cows, pigs, chickens, and other docile mobs?
Currently I am at level 40 slashing, but I still appear to be gaining experience from the above mentioned.... when I would prefer to just lower my MC instead.
Is anyone able to confirm this?
