The stats in illa are used to be static. The improvement of your char, his growing experience are your growing skills.
If it is absolute needed, maybe in reason of big IG happenings (like loosing a leg) you can ask a GM to change your stats. But without a very special reason this is limited to 2 points and you can only ask one time to change the stats of your Char.

I had no clue what some of the stats even meant, so I didn't touch them. After getting a better idea, I would like to raise essence by 2.

If you picked one from the pre-made classes you should be fine.
