The Games and Their Rules

Post by Elvaine Morgan »

The Games are coming soon, and as I'm aware we have a large number of citizens who are new to our land, I thought it'd elaborate on what exactly these games are.

They are a triennial set of events (that is, we play them every three years) between the three neighbouring towns of Runewick, Cadomyr and Galmair. Each town sends its finest to compete and defeat the opponents, to win the honour of hosting the Games in subsequent years.

The current hosts are Cadomyr, as they beat Galmair by a hair last time. The events last a dwarven week, starting on the 24th of Siros, in the following format (which speaks in terms of dwarven days to cover the dwarven week):

Day One:
The Opening Ceremony

Everyone gathers for a celebration of the upcoming games, for an event hosted by Rosaline.

Day Two:
The Precision Events:

Fencing – A competition using standardised cloth gear and wooden swords. The first to land ten successful blows wins.
Archery – Archers from each town must try and kill monsters of a certain colour. The one to kill all their monsters first wins.

Day Three:
The Agility Events:

Cross Country Relay Race – The first contestant will run from Cadomyr to Runewick. He will hand a baton to the second contestant, who will run to Galmair.
Katanbi Sprint – A quick sprint from the arena to Cadomyr.

Day Four:
The Cooperative Events:

Chain Race – A race, carrying a stick. Only he who holds the stick in his hands may move, but he can throw the stick to others. Everyone must cross the finish line to win. If someone throws the stick short, the whole team must return to the start.
Courier – A huge pile of coal must be transported, and dropped at the finish to win. The team can choose how much coal to carry between them at a time.

Day Five:
The Navigation Events:

Bridge Race – A race in an underground dungeon across thin bridges. If you fall off, you must return to the start. The team whose members all get to the end first win.
Maze – A race through an underground maze. In each team, every contestant must find their way to the end to win.

Day Six:
The Jovial Events:

Prisoner – Each person has a rope in one hand and a wooden sword in the other. With the rope he ties up his friend. Each attacker must try and hit the prisoner of his enemy. The prisoner who is hit ten times first loses.
Onionball Battle Royale – Two onions are in play at once. Onion holders stand still, everyone else must move. If you get hit, you’re out. If you walk onto the mud, you’re out. The first person to pick up an onion after it lands is a new onion thrower. If there are two players from opposing teams left at the end, they each play a game of 1 versus 1 Onionball to see who is the winner.

Day Seven:
The Closing Ceremony:

The winners are announced, awards are bestowed, and the victorious town, who shall host the game again in three years' time, is declared. All the towns combined go to the Hemp Necktie Inn to drink and be happy and mirthful and celebrate together. Any sore losers or winners are forcefully ejected from the building, it is a time of congratulation and enjoyment. Afterwards, the contestants from each town return to their homes for private celebration and reflection.

Each event has not only space for competititors, but areas for spectactors who simply wish to enjoy the Games also. People may compete in as many events as they like, but in events where the numbers must match, teams may have to be standardised to the same size. I encourage everyone from all towns to come along for as many events as you can attend, and particularly the Onionball Battle Royale, and to leave your petty differences at home as you bring only your sportsmanship.

Zwiebelwerfer stehen still, alle anderen müssen sich bewegen.
