Recently, Eltareon has been brabbling on and on with great excitement about a newly arrived scroll, handing copies of it to everyone who requests so. It might be quite suspicious why a gnome finds such great interrest in a such scripture - and he seems to be even more excited about the fact, that this is only the first of a series of scrolls the library is supposed to receive in the future.
The origin of the Halfling Race
Looking at the rest of the races in Illarion, halflings are the ones closest to the humans. It's absolutely certain that, just like each and every other race, they developed from the humans - to the worse of course. Humans are without a doubt the summit of the gods' creation. How else could one explain their predominant reign over most parts of Illarion?
While halflings stand out due to outlandishness they are not as despicable as the other races; their oddness is tolerable far easier.
Now, let us see how it became that halflings emerged from the superior human race.
Observing a halfling, you will find out the following specifics:
He is remarkably smaller than a human.
He is chubbier.
He has big feet which are very hairy.
He holds childlike features and behaviour.
The challange given is to explain all those characteristics and they can in fact be elucidated with utter logic: Halflings emerged from degenerated humans. It seems fairly obvious, that those humans were very lazy indeed and endulged in gluttony. It was the kind of men that grew up battening themselves from the moment they were born. The kind, that seldomly even moved. As they grew up doing nothing but sitting around and eating pie all day long it came to happen, that they developed more in width than in height, thus explaining, why halflings are so fat. This is also the reason why halflings in general, not only regarding their size, have smilarities to children - fat children; in looks aswell as in mental capability.
The principle of gravity is common knowledge. The fat they grew due to their never ending feasting orgies thus partly wandered lower and lower, finally imbedding in their feet. That is the reason why the feet of halflings are so large. They are nothing more than the result of sunken fat caused by overendulgance and a lack of exercise.
The hairs on their feet are the outcome of their poor hygiene. It's easy to imagine: A hoggish, never exercising creature letting all the dirt drip from its mouth onto its belly while engulfing masses of food, just wiping over the tummy every once in a while. All the crumbs and debris eventually lands on the feet, where it remains due to the fact that said feet are never moved, thus creating a hotbed for practically anything to grow there and out of sheer coincidence, those disgusting hairs evolved.
All this leads us to the obvious assumption that halflings emerged from most degenerated humans who had rid themselves of their true, majestic nature with their unspeakable, disreputable behaviour.

Seit neustem erzählt Eltareon mit Begeisterung von einem neuen Schriftstück, das kürzlich erst eingetroffen ist und reicht einem jeden auf Wunsch eine Abschrift. Es mag verwunderlich sein, warum ein Gnom sich an derartigen Schriften erfreuen kann - und noch mehr Freude bereitet es ihm, zu berichten, dass dies nur das erste von einer Reihe von Schriften ist, die noch alle der Bibliothek zu Verfügung gestellt werden.
Die Entstehung der Halblinge
Halbling sind, betrachtet man die übrigen Rassen Illarions, die die noch am nächsten mit dem Menschen verwandt sind. Zweifellos haben sie sich so wie jede andere Rasse auch aus dem Menschen entwickelt – natürlich zum Schlechteren. Dass die Menschen die Krone der göttlichen Schöpfung sind, ist unbestreitbar. Wie sonst könnte man ihre dominante Vorherrschaft über die meisten Gebiete Illarions erklären?
Obwohl Halblinge sich durch Sonderbarkeit auszeichnen, sind sie nicht so verachtenswert wie manch andere der übrigen Rassen; ihre Sonderbarkeit lässt sich deutlich leichter ertragen. Beginnen wir nun damit, festzustellen, wie es dazu kam, dass die Halblinge aus dem überlegnen Menschengeschlecht entsprangen.
Betrachtet man den Halbling, stellt man folgende Besonderheiten fest:
Er ist deutlich kleiner als der Mensch.
Er ist dicker.
Er hat große Füße, die beharrt sind.
Er ist kindlich in seinem Aussehen und Benehmen.
Es gilt diese ganzen Merkmale zu erklären und sie lassen sich in der Tat durch einen Vorgang vollkommen logisch erklären: Die Halblinge haben sich aus degenerierten Menschen entwickelt. Es waren wohl sehr faule Menschen, die auch noch der Völlerei frönten. Es waren Menschen solcher Natur, die schon von Kleinkindesalter an ständig Essen zu sich nahmen. Sie haben sich zudem selten bewegt. Da sie also ständig nur saßen und Kuchen aßen, haben sie sich mehr in die Breite als in die Höhe entwickelt, deswegen sind Halblinge dick. Das ist auch der Grund, warum Halblinge generell, nicht nur in Bezug auf die Größe, Ähnlichkeit mit Kindern haben – fetten Kindern; sowohl im Aussehen wie auch in der geistigen Reife.
Das Dinge tendieren nach unten zu fallen, ist allgemein bekannt. Das Fett, das sie durch ihr ständiges Essen angeeignet haben, wanderte somit immer auch zum Teil nach unten und somit in die Füße. Aus diesem Grund sind die Füße von Halblingen so groß. Es ist nichts anderes als das Ergebnis von nach unten gewanderten Fett auf Grund mangelnder Bewegung.
Die Haare auf den Füßen sind das Produkt von mangelnder Reinlichkeit. Es lässt sich leicht vorstellen: Diese verfressenen, sich nicht bewegenden Wesen haben all den Dreck, der von ihrem Mund fiel, während sie das Essen in sich stopften, und auf den Bauch landete, einfach mit ihren schmierigen Fingern weggewischt. Dann sind die Krümel nach unten und somit auch auf ihre Füße gefallen. Da sie sich aber nicht bewegten, blieb dort der Dreck. Aus diesem konnte sich dann alles mögliche entwickeln und durch puren Zufall entstanden dort diese widerlichen Haare.
All das führt uns zu der offensichtlichen Beobachtung, dass sich die Halblinge aus äußerst degenerierten Menschen entwickelt haben, die sich durch ihr schändliches Verhalten von ihrer wahren, ehrbaren Natur abgewandt hatten.
