[Map] Where does your Char come from?

Post by Amelia Rotholz »

Hey folks!

I started to ask people for the places, their chars come from and gather all your nice places on the map of the mainland. Many did bring up their own villages and places and I marked them so far!
If you want your home dotted there, please tell me and I will add it.
Also, if it is a place you came up with, feel free to add a description.
Or just tell us, where your chars originate from.

Cay is from Lor Angur at a time when two divisions of mages were fighting for control.

Brimshire

Brimshire and its fields and emerald woods are embedded in a wide vale between Forkmyr River and the Middle Mountains. On clear days, when the north wind blows, you could taste the salt of the seas in the air and sometimes, the seagulls pay a visit. The village snuggles itself to the river shore.
It was once just a small, unimportant farmer’s village, often raided by bandits. By now, it has evolved, from a collective of farmers, to an active, fortified settlement, holding much more than a few farms. The surrounding is was made from the typical sand coloured stones of this area, giving a less constructing impression. The meeting place turned into a marketplace, paved with the same bright stone, the fountain had been renewed and even some craftsmen did settle down. Farmers from nearby villages come here to trade, now. It has turned into the pounding heart of the region between Laris and Salkamar.

Due to its location right at the border, it often switched between Albar and Salkamar during the past centuries, which led to a unique, mixed culture. On the outside it might seem strict as in Albar: a patriarchy, were women just have to know their place.

While girls are educated to be a good mother and wife and marriages often are agreed between families, there is more to it. Family is one of the highest values and it is most important, a daughter is given in best and save hands. The laws for the protection of women are very strict. Violence against them can earn you a town ban or worse.

Getting pregnant before marriage makes you an outcast, though. While the village will help you to raise the child, you will not get married anymore as you are on the lowest social status, not being part of the society, anymore. Same goes for the man who caused it, similar to both parties involved in adultery. These laws shall guarantee most safety for women and children.
Furthermore, women are encouraged to learn useful crafts to support their family. There are limits though. Smithing, miners work and wood cutting are off limits, as they are stated to be too dangerous. Also, women are not allowed to train fighting.

The people of Brimshire are very religious, depending on the elder gods as well as on the young. There are many festivities and traditions evolving around them. However, they are also said to be very superstitious and not that fond of magic, being convinced it is godly power, which should not fall into mortal hands. Despite seeming to be a bit rough on the outside, they are mostly hardworking, honest and good at heart.

Yslana's Temple of the Sun

The elf community was old and only small. It was grouped around the Sun Temple, presided over by Yslana, Yridia's mother, as priestess and mage.

Today, only underground libraries, if any, remain of it. The dark forces from Amat'Aras had killed the elves, enslaved them and destroyed the temple.
However, all this happened long after Yridia had left her people to find her own way.

Itsuko is from Kosuke no Shima.
Image

Kosuke no Shima, a remote island off the Albarian coast, named after Kosuke the Explorer, who many centuries ago set the first human(!) foot on it's shores.

The island has several volcanos and a large mountain range in it's middle, so most the towns and villages are squeezed on the plateau near the western shore. The climate is warm, with the winter mild and the summer humid and hot. In autumn rain comes in from the Great Ocean, often typhoons bring lots of water causing floods.

Palm trees are common, as well as other plants that prefer warmer, humid climate such as melons. In the deep mountain forest one can find large insects and monster bugs similar to these found in Cadomyr, or if one is unlucky one is found by hungry ogres or wolves.

The settlements Capital and Land-in-North, are the only ones with a habour, made wealthy by exporting wood and cloth to others islands. Silk is won from large butterfies and spun to wonderful cloth in the largest towns' tailoring guilds. The infrastructure in the plateau is built well, large paths and many inns allow travellers access to each settlement making travel for nobles and their footmen very comfortable. The common peasant is not allowed to leave their lord's land without permission and way posts make sure only those with valid papers can pass - the Ronagan temples or shrines might provide fake papers to the rest in exchange for hard coin. Many people flee their lord's lands and try to make a living in the towns as free commoners. The living conditions are harsh there, though. Slums are crowded and epidemics break out rather regularly. The rich enclose themselves behind walls in the better town districts. The growth of the settlements and the wealth, as well as the better living conditions, that came with it, also allow for lots of artistic creations. While, evil tongues whisper that in the town the nobles prefer to focus on writing poems than on wielding swords. In the provinces and smaller villages there are often quarrels between nobles fighting for land or honour, or fighting down hungry peasants uprisings. Wise men claim that in the future this development will surely lead to trouble with pirates in the wealthy larger towns, but the King's Representative, who officially rules the island does nothing to increase the cities protection. It is also very likely that he can't make any important decisions on this, because a circle of high-priests holds all the power. These priests manage all the political affairs, but not from the Capital (Capital-Town), but from Valley-Town. This place is famous for it's large temples, especially it's temple dedicated to Bragon on a mountain high above the city. Many pilgrims travel there to look at the golden dragon statue with diamond eyes and buy gifts and lucky charms for their family and friends at home. The development of temples and shrines attracting tourists, over centuries, lead to the city's influential position, the tourists brought money and information from all over the land. Today, this place is not only well know for it's many temples and shines but also famous or infamous for intrigue and murder. The nobles living in the town, are making use of assasin families to gather information or to get rid of other nobles that cross them.

Land-in-North, is the largest town in the south. It has a habour and trade is done with with the neighbouring island, but also with non-Albarian places such Salkamaerian Falmarha. Kang-Arr being the most modern Albarian city and renowned as a more liberal trading port has a trade route with Falmarha, and the small island of Kosuke sits on this trading route between these two cities. Kosuke's traders profit greatly from providing food and water to ships travelling futher in both directions, beside trading Kosuke-made cloth and wood. Rice, another Kosuke-product, grown in the fields and mountains, just won't sell anywhere else it seems.

Just like in Capital, at Land-in-North's habour all non-Albarian humans as well as non-human people are forbidden to go on land without valid papers. The only way to get valid papers is to request them in person at the habour office - or by bribing a habour worker. Special to Land-in-North is just the exceptional rule that Kosukians can enter boats without needing a valid paper, so this is the place to go, if you intend to leave the country.

LAEMAROS

Laemaros was a green and fertile little kingdom. It was founded by the Lamar family.
It was located far away from Gobaith and Illarion behind the ice desert.
Surrounded by principalities and other small kingdoms, it was one of the poorer ones.
Women were not allowed to learn to read and write - only the princess made an exception as heiress to the throne.
As often happens, there was a war, everything changed and the small kingdom was enslaved by a powerful enemy.
None other than Aleyty's archenemy and opponent, whom she should have married and later defeated.
The rest is history, but the name Lamar will be extinguished with Aleytys, as the name was also erased by the enemy.
She herself was unable to save the kingdom for lack of resources, friends and an army.

Dragotal

Dragotal is an island far northeast of the submerged island of Gobaith. The island is divided by a massive mountain range. To the left of the mountain are the plains of Dragotal. The town of Dragotal is located on the southern coast. To the right of the mountain is a dense forest that is considered sacred by the locals. In the middle of the forest there is a round mountain massif with a plateau. According to legends, dragons live there.

Dragotal was a thriving seafaring town a few hundred years ago. But due to internal conflicts and a subsequent war with the local magicians' guild, Dragotal was cursed. A curse of eternal drought. The city disintegrated over the next few centuries until finally only a handful of residents remained.

Only a few decades ago the curse was finally broken and the island was repopulated, even some of the descendants of the old inhabitants came back. Meanwhile a city has emerged there again.

Temran

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Temran

The city is surrounded by a city wall and watchtowers. The teleport stone in front of the city, as you know it from Illarion,
reaches up to the hip, in addition, the name of the city is also engraved there. Shortly behind it, is a bridge that leads over a
narrow river.
The road, which leads over the bridge, ends first in front of a large city gate.
In the other direction, the street leads into the mountains and finally to the sea. The route is well paved. To the south and
southwest are forests and to the northwest are mountains again. The forests are closer to the city, at least in the west, but
the mountains are not directly adjacent to it. Especially since there are also fields that are being cultivated close to Temran.
The city itself appeared as follows.
The houses are a mixture of wood and stone buildings. The paved way leads straight through the city, with turns here and there
to other areas of the city, to the marketplace where there is also a fountain.
One can see many different creatures here. Humans, elves, dwarves and also orcs or halflings.
Also the city guard patrols always in pairs on the wall in certain intervals. They are also in the city occasionally and help if it is
necessary with everything that arises.
There is actually everything here what a city needs. Horse stables, bakers, butchers, blacksmiths, tailors. Furthermore, a tavern
which also functions as an inn. Naturally, there is also a guardhouse for the city guard with an armory and training grounds.
One area of the city still looks very new, as if these houses were recently completed and occupied.
Then there is the house of the druid Naira Elofai and the Medicos. It is a tree but it is also a house. The branches are intertwined
everywhere. It also has stone and finely crafted wood. Much of it seems elven. In addition, it would seem that there is more than
one house around the giant tree. Apparently, the two houses inside are connected as well. This definitely looks impressive. The
right entrance leads to the hospital and the entrance next to it, is a kind of healing bath and more than just that, among
other things.

Gamliel is from the Plains of Serin (his people are the nomadic dwarven clans who ride the vast plains and steppes of Illarion, have plans for global dominion, worship fire, and believe good behavior will be rewarded with being reborn one day as a Wolfbrother)...

However, he is currently a member of the Unhorsed, an outcast!

P.S. Unhorsed means you are kicked out of the clans for illness/crime/disability/dishonor or some other shameful, stigmatizing issue. You are then henceforth forbidden from riding horses and have to live in a city by yourself in exile.
