Cursing

Is it against the OOC game rules to have a character curse and/or use foul language? What is the language rating of the game?
PG-13? Rules on the page specify that language should be appropriate for the character. Does this mean we have to use old english? I have not seen it done ingame, so I assume modern linguistics were in place. I presume in the old times people had a way to phrase things like "check it out" or "what's going on".
I play a character emotional and with an army background. Is "ass" a prohibited curse? I got called out on it by a player.
Is it permitted to do things like #me curses profusely if speaking out curses is not allowed?
What age group does the game target?

Thanks.

When in doubt, use ****.

IIRC the only things picked up by the naughty word detector (tm) are the F word and Heil?

I've never had problems with using ass, arse, shit or bullshit IG and will continue to use them when I see fit. However, I suppose that you shouldn't use much stronger profanities than those.

There is no rule against using foul language as far as I am aware. The problem was that you used the term 'suck ass', I believe.

I use arse. I don't think its in place, during medieval times, whether it be with magical pixies or not, for someone to say "oh your dad died? That sucks ass"

Ah. Alright. That's what I was wondering, i did not intend to go as far as the "F" word, that's less in character. More on the "hell-shit-ass" level. But nothing more than that. Then I hope player who called me out on "ass", directs his attention to this thread.

Perhaps a GM could post here to make it solid?

I got some trouble once with a GM when i said "Baumfi**er" = "treefu**er"...except from that...never had trouble with "shit, asshole, bastard..."
just avoid modern terms like "you nig*a" or thinks like that...be creativ.
Though some POs seem to have trouble with "shit" etc...i tend to ignore them since the usage of those words fit my chars...

As I have already said, you were called out on 'suck ass' not 'ass'. 'Suck ass' is a modern term, which are against the rules. You may as well have said 'Tell the guards they are fail'. I was the one who called you out IC, someone else also did so OOC.

Only thing I say ingame which I don't asterisk out (although I barely use those) is "damn", which I don't deem as bad.

I personally stick to medieval insults. Curses, Damn...

Calling someone an 'ass' sounds to be rather modern to me if it is a reference to the arse.

Do we REALLY need to use bad language? Its just a game.

We have people calling each other out in terms of grammar and slang. In seriousness, and not in jest? And the comment in question is "suck ass" ? My mind is fucking blown. There are far more productive things to do ingame.

Invent your own swear words.

D:
(GUY)'Haldrom': Tell the guilds who are formed with reason to protect the island that they suck ass.
Rukka: Rukka going to assume joo said dey lick bananas.

Calling someone an 'ass' is too modern. I scowl every time I see it.

No, saying "kick your ass" or "save your ass" is too modern.

Calling someone an "ass" is shakespearean, because it's calling someone a donkey.

But meh, I'd personally just not use it at all.

Well, it just sounds too modern to me. *shrug*

The recommended age for Illarion is 16 but since we all know that some are also way younger, I think it should be 'appropriate'. I have no problem with ass, arse, damn etc those 'common' words you would also say in front of your grandma or little sister, everything else should be kept out. But I would love to see when curses would be invented to fit the ingame environment. :)

I'd never say ass, arse, crap etc. in front of my family. >_>

I get in trouble for saying "friggin'"

I considered "good" swearing in the game, always by using religious references. That sounded well and fit into the environment. And well. We got 16 gods and 3 logical groups of gods. Should be enough for a rather wide selection of possible swearing.

Talking about insults, I always found it helpful using insults no one would ever say RL. Helps the others to separate IG and OOC. Good working are always comparisons to animals, references to the love life of the mother, comments on the eating habits and so on. I guess you are getting the picture. ;)
