Why do you play Illarion?

So, why people? Why?

I'm not really sure why I'm still here, but apparently I do enjoy it otherwise I wouldn't still be around. 3 years going on 4, sheesh.

Hehe, tell me about it. Sometimes I know that having a smoke late at night won't give me a "buzz" I'm looking for, but I like to habitually go out and light one up because I know there might be people in the parking lot to have a fun conversation with. And other times, you're alone. But if you don't, you feel like you're missing out on something.

With Illarion, you know that you might be the only person around, but if you don't check, you could be missing out on social interaction on the forums. Cheers.

It is the only game I know you can actually influence directly by the actions of your character. And one can play as casual gamer without getting frustrated too much.

1) It was the first and as far as I can remember pretty much the best roleplaying game I ever found.

2) It's fun.

3) I don't have anything better to do realy.

4) You can crawl in someone else's skin, acting like he/she would, feeling like he/she would, Get away from real life..

5) It's a good excuse to talk to Jen.

6) Because plain leveling up bores me after less then a week usualy.

7) You can atualy talk to people on a (reasonable) intelligent level, not just people who walk up to you and say: "omg gif me stuff!!!!!!111", "wnat t af seks?????" or "u r ga an u suck ur dads dik an i hek u!!!!!!!111"

I don't have many friends in real life, mostly 'cause I dont listen to/wear/do the stuff that's 'in'. On the net you'll find people who don't seem care as much, they like you simply for being you and acting the way you do. Even though they arn't what you would call 'real' friends that would stick with you no matter what, they atleast satisfy my 'social needs' . Here on Illarion I've found a larger concentration of those kind of people.

That includes sad things and bad things. My main, and most emotional char Kevin can be sitting at a wall silently, having a million thoughts and feelings rush through his mind. But sadly, alot of people don't seem to understand it and just seem to think I'm roleplaying badly or so, while all they have to do is add up the things he does and says. But when playing with someone that understands that, even if his/her character doesn't realy can give you some great experiances. It makes me feel all tingly/good/emotional inside. And who knows, it might just help later on in life.

why do i play?

i dont know, i always have been addicted to gaming. - no matter what.

why on a computer?

because it gets harder and harder to find game freaks in the real neighbourhood.

why online?

because A.I. tends to be stupid. - no challenge.

why illarion?

because an online-friend, who played here formerly, recomended it as being special.

+ It's cute.
+ I like the item system. (No +3 Orcbane Swords of Haste.)
+ Good selection of character races.
+ No complicated "class system" or heavy restrictions to one's own imagination.
+ Continuously developed and improved. (Unlike static, commercial games which are eventually fully released, and merely "updated" but never revamped.)
+ Free to play.

- Skill learning caps are very tight; unfortunate for the casual gamer. (Don't have time to play often? Tough, because you can only have your character learn so much in that time.)
- Graphics are overall nice, but the fact that character graphics don't display details like equipment or minute details (i.e. hair color) make the use of #me for self-descriptions quite tedious.

All I can think of right now.
Pros > Cons.

3 simple reasons for me,

I love the community of people - No matter what you're age, gender, education, you can play a character and be treated for who you're character is (ideally) and not who you, as a player, are. As Roleplayers, we are already at a higher 'maturity' than the average 'Hack 'n' Slashers'. I am older RL than most here, with many experiences and knowledge. However, there are some I can tell (from forum behavior) are very young, but that doesn't matter. Their character is just as valuable and important as mine. I learn from them as they learn from me. Illarion is a great equalizer of players.

I love the evolving story lines - Despite the current Choas on Gobiath (It is getting a little stressful), where else would you have 'player-driven' plots, politics, allegiances and wars? I love the activity of the players both IG and in the forums and the committment they have to enhancing the experience for everyone. From the 'Rumors' to the Guilds, the forum brings a new experience to Illarion than just playing IG really could. The two, working in conjunction, I believe is what really gives Illarion it's addictive quality.

Last, the value for the money - Even though Illarion is Free, it is constantly being developed, enhanced and updated. Most other 'free' games are static and unchanging. Not so here. This is due to the loving care and committment of our many Game-Masters and Moderators, who believe in the 'Dream' of Illarion, and work many selfless hours behind the scenes to make Illarion better for us. If it were not for these people, Illarion would be just another 'freeware' game on the Net. Instead, it is a living, breathing 'community'. I would like to give them a round of applause for their efforts.

At this point, if Illarion needed to charge to play, I would pay it. Illarion is worth it. For all the right reasons.

I started because it is free. And I can play it with my 56k Modem.
Now I play it because all the great players/characters (okay, not ALL are great

) and the open storylines and quests.

Haha, nah. I play for fun in between games, work, and other general times I'm already preoccupied. I'd like to play in game more but I just find it hard to socialise and meet people who aren't too busy and caught up in the in game politics etc.

So I play for fun because I like to pretend to be someone else, and I really like the medieval period of knights etc. I dont play because I cant socialise well. I guess some things you cant shake ig or irl.

I don't play anymore but I guess I still hang around the boards because I feel I have deep roots and history here. I don't think I'll ever have the same impact or understanding of another game community. I feel like I've had a had a huge impact in shaping the world of Illarion and its characters. I enjoy seeing what kind of things have developed over time since then from the influences of myself and my peers, and see where it will go eventually. I like it when I see the actions or stories of the past being mentioned as a piece of history years later by new generations of characters and gives the world depth that way.

I'd give playing a shot again, but at this point in my life, I don't think my time will permit what seems like a somewhat steep learning curve of the changing technics. Also, I don't really agree with what I think is generally these days a misplaced importance on over using #me's at the extreme end rather than on what happens in the overall progression of the plotline/scenario.

Frank Wanye is one of the serveral nick names I have been branded for life. another variation like frankous dias has also been branded to me, like brunce wayne in spanish. If you care I will tell the story of how I got these nicknames.

The reason I like this game, believe or not, are the very very strict rules.
I don't know how long it took you guys, but it took me five days to get an account. Three days to get my name approved making me want to play the game more and more. I like the fact that you have to act in character all the time. Unlike other MMORPGs, people usually have a reason to hate you (I've played games were ppl hated me just because of my name).
