What is wrong with illarion/Was läuft falsch in Illarion

Post by Cassandra Fjurin »

Now again i heared it from a player. There is something wrong with illarion. What is that. I dont want a list of bugs, for that we have flyspray. This question is more for the old players who have stopped playing the last days. Why? Why is illarion boring. What is happened after the wipe. What is so wrong that you have stopped playing illarion.

================================================

Warum? Warum ist Illarion auf einmal langweilig? Was ist durch den Wipe schlimmes passiert? Was ist so falsch das ihr aufgehört habt zu spielen?

I have an answer for you.

Rebuilding skills

The older players didnt have to rebuild their skills, they could when needed get whatever they want. Now they have to rework for that lvl of skill.

When they had those skills, they had more time for roleplaying.

Now they have no skills, or very low, and they dont want to have to rebuild their characters to that lvl, so they stop.

I am not saying its right, but that is what I think is going on

Edit

Personally I think it is foolish to stop because of having to rebuild skill.

It is going to take awhile for us newbies to work up those skills, and our rping lvl.

So that is why Illarion, isnt to great at this moment.

But hey I think alot of ppl will stick to it, I know Ill be around for a long while

You are right, but that is the problem of the players. It was never ment that they have to rebuild all their skills in 1 week. Currently i whish that we had made a complete history wipe and start from complete new. So never have to rebuild the old skills.

For me, it is multiple reasons.

1. The new map is too big. I don't feel that walking for ages is very fun.
2. World of Warcraft. I play it much more than Illarion
3. Upcoming exams
4. After taking a long time out of the game, I find it hard to pick up and start playing again
5. Early on, everyone was trying to build skills and gain items. That's what I play World of Warcraft for. I never wanted to play Illarion for gaining items and skills.

It has never been a matter of skills for me. Only one character ever had a single high skill, and that was herblore, which was ludicriously easy to raise. Besides, herblore isn't even an implemented skill right now. Items? Illarion doesn't have enough items to keep my interest for over 5 minutes.

1. Term papers, Exams, School, Life
2. People don't focus on roleplay, but more skill now.

3. Screw School- Cheat
4. Your right
5. Thats sort of what I said :)

I try to play when I can, like last night was the first time in months and I stopped at about 3 am or something. Sometimes I work late, sometimes I do other things but most of all I find it hard to socialise in Illarion for some reason.

Too many technical changes coming. You do something, and the next day it's worthless because of another change, item deletion, skill reduction etc...

There are no introduced structures yet. Half of the things you cannot do because of the lack of experienced chars. There's too many "newbies" and no "experts".

I guess once things are running smooth again some players will return.

Write down points 1,2,3,4,5 for me too. =3 Though I like the new map, sometimes I do not wander too far from town, because I would have to walk the huge distance back again.

And the general fact that I have the feeling I cannot build up skill at all for some strange reason. Even my fighter seems to have problems killing pigs, because he has no weapon. (which I cannot acquire anymore, because, guess what, the one I bought broke). I play only on request Cass/Heiko/whatever name you prefer in this case ( ). Anyhow, I shall try alright?

There does seem to be issues, because the "rejuvination" that should have happened after the wipe didn't really happen, and we're almost back down to the old amount of players online.

Though I do think Varshikar is 17 RL days away  , I don't think the map is a big problem. People can be found, but when they are, not much happens. That's not usually a good thing. There are more interesting spots on the map, and so on.

Like Adano stated, it's hard to do things because they change everyday. Furthermore, you can't really get ahead at all, without going overboard on working. You have to work a lot to just barely break even, depending on your characters occupation.

Also, many of the shady characters are either gone or in hiding, which doesn't help certain actions going on

For me i think the overcomplication of crafting has driven a lot of players away. Whereas i do like the experimentation after several "you do not have the right resources" crafting does get frustating.

The biggest and possibly worse change is the moving of monsters into dungeons. My character is an archer, yet i'm forced to use swords due to the little amount of space and the shear amount of monsters coming at me.

Hunt humans. Seems to be a sport nowadays. :(

Anyhow, moving on. I have also stopped playing, because of personal reasons/grudges. I think some of the players have become a little bit...too creative with their RP. If you need an example, I could send you a PM. I do not wish the flaming that would/might happen here.

1. Too much Focus on skills
2. No big exlpanation, I sometimes like "find out in game" but theres too much now, If you don't know how to smith in real life, you'll never detrimine how. It seems to me that these characters arent just born on illarion and have no knowledge of anything or common sense they should have a basic understanding of almost everything (Ie how to do it) This is a roleplaying game not a "detrime which things you click together in what order to get the start of an object, which you can then use with some other object in the right pattern to get a full object that will rot away in 30 minutes of usage" That Sentence in quotes sums it up for me, that is what the game has become to me.
3. the map is way to large for such a slow walking speed, although its realistic, I'm playing a game, If I wanted to walk large amounts of distances to get from place to place I'd go outside and walk to K-mart, not hold down an arrow key for 30 minutes to get from A to B.
4. Maybe too much realisim in the wrong areas, its all "learn in game" when it comes to something entirely complex and no real respoonse when it's helping a character, if we want to get snit picky about realism we could simply say I was born smithing.
5. constant state of change. Self explanitory

I actually see a simle solution that I'm sure very few will agree with: GM assigned skills, you chose to have 1 craftsmen skill your an expert in, the 1/2 expert in another of your choice. After that Characters who want to learn more can go ahead, Characters who are staisfied can then roleplay. This would have to be far more complex than this because some chars dont want any craft skills (I have a char who wants to know how to do 2 things, none of which involve craftsmenship)

It is hard to gain money and the need is forced on you. It forces you away from roleplay.

Yes, it is hard to make money now because if you get some more skill in fighting stats, you cannot learn anything in any other stat. And it seems that the time to learn another skill restarts everytime you try and learn something new. Which is frustrating, becuase for an hour I had no to roleplay with and was waiting to be able to do something, when some guy with a forest troll runs into town and I had to kill it, forcing me to restart the time limit again.
Plus, people do not play because, like Adano said, I had my character set with a swords, shields and armour from the skeletons. I wouldn't have had to do anything for quite a while. But now that they were taken away, I have to work to get back to where I was.
And as there is rarely anyone to roleplay with because everyone doesn't like how it is turning out, I have to spend my time training, then waiting to go train again because there is nothing else to do.

ps- I miss Konstantin, at least he was on all the time to roleplay with.

The map is ok for me. Worlds ARE big. On the old client you could go from a town to another in less than 1 minute.
Now, what isn't an actual problem, but destroys a lot of the fun, is this suddenly intention of recreating real life inside a game. I think most of the players had more fun with the old smithing system, carptentry and etc.
"You can't concentrate on learning right now" was a good idea to prevent powergaming, but, did it need to happen that fast? It's not only preventing us from powergaming but from any developing of any skill.
The items break now, ok. But, come on, no sword breaks after being used 5 times against no armored oponents.
I think the so called realism is taking the fun from the game. After all, it's a game, when we play it we don't want another real life, we want to have fun.
But that's just my humbly opinions.

Swords break so soon because there is not a single sword of considerable quality in game at the moment.
That'S one of the points why I said that one of the problems Illarion suffers right now is the complete lack of experienced chars.
At the moment nobody knows anything and nobody can anything. You cannot even try to learn ingame because everyone else is trying to figure ot the same things as you.

1. I like the map and it looks really nice, but since I have to get money and a dagger costs 120 copper!!, I have to spend far to much time finding things to sell( because I do not have any trade ). It would be fun if there were people who you could go herb picking with or hunting, but I seldom find any.

2. Too many things that needs explaining, magic( maybe some great magic ceremony to find out the basics?? ), The orc in the desert, what is he doing there?

3. The monsters have too much free will, they get too far from their spawn point and you have a hard time finding them. Like the mummies.

4. Like I mentioned in "1", weapons brake and are far too expensive.

5. Personal problem( I can't think of a goal for my char which makes it hard for my to know how he should be. ) :P

I don't think weapon braking is a bad thing. The only bad thing it would seem about it, is the apparent ease they break with, but then again your character may not know how to wield it properly without it braking yet, but we (as players) don't have a clue.

Maybe if more ooc info was available things would be easier to understand, but that's just my opinion.

I just lack the time, its plain and simple.

Everytime I play, I love every moment of it.
Even when my character can not affort tools, can not replace broken equipment, ect.
Its always fun to meet these new characters that run everywhere arround, annoy them in foreign (ingame) languages, discover my own map (yes, really) and figure out how I can still improve it on specific aspects (since you players give almost no real feedback).

Crafting is a bit tricky, and the lack of expert characters make our aviable npc-brought equipment expensive and yet very crapy, but its a matter of time till some of the characters gained the nessesary skills to provide the rest of the characters with high-quality but still affordable items.

If the map is already too big for you, I might scrap all extension ideas that already float arround.
And I dont want to imagine the uproar that will follow a depot-system-switch. Where you really have to carry your goods from A to B and not magicly find them there.

I just wish I could play Illarion 12 hours a day, and create maps the other 12 hours of the day, but life keeps me from having fun all the time.

I think that will make many players come back even. Considering the fact that you do not have to spend your time in Troll's Bane to rp.

The fact that everyone else stays there hun. I know, "You can change it all.". In fact, I am already working on such a project with other players. But that is not the point. You have to be in Troll's Bane to atleast start the RP. Which usually goes to some other place. But the fact you have to start there (and do not tell me you don't, unless you have very valid reasons  ) is annoying. Especially if yoru char hates that town. You would never ever find fun RP, or you would have to randomly find someone in the vastness that I call our map.

I personally try and force rp on most people that I find. I dont care what they are doing or who they are talking to.

Me, Brendan, Fooser, And some elfess sorry I forgot your name. And a fun session of rp, because I gave the elfess a flower

Giving out flowers is one of my ways of forcing people to rp with me. Even if they dont like it *cough* Devrah *cough*

The map isnt really so big, especially when you know the shortcuts. and what I mean by shortcuts is staying on the grass, and streets for as long as possible to get the best speed possible.

I dont know if there is a part of the map I havent explored yet. Because thats what my character does alot of the time, Usually when there is nobody or next to nobody on. Wait there is a place Skellie Cave, but I am afraid to go down there :) Specially now, with super connected monsters :P.

The only two real problems are re skilling up, and I agree the not knowing of the combinations of things. But the not knowing of combinations, just increases our imagination, its just frustrating sometimes

I think the map isn't too big, it is almost too small. Yes, it is. With the new changes that will come soon, it will be easier to go to far away places like Varshikar in a short period of time.

My reasons for not playing 24/7:

1. I don't see a point in buying or getting things like good armour when it is deleted in a few days. The armour one of my chars had was really worked on. It was a present or a tribut or whatever you'll call it and I find it hard to explain it ingame why I lost this armour. That is to say it in proper english: BULLSHIT!
That's a reason why I'm not playing this character right now or only now and than.

2. My second char is a druid. Well the druid magic isn't implented yet, herbs are laying around everywhere. No need to explore something in this area. Well than there is still the thing with planting crops ... without a flail. (Did anyone find one yet?!)
Another reason is, that the player I roleplay most with with that char is taking a break...

3. That leats to Josefine, the only char I'm playing right now but only if anyone is online I feel like rping with. That is mostly because I don't feel like pging the skills I need to roleplay Josefine properly.
A little scene I always feeling like will happen soon:

A criminal/ monster/ foe/ whatever enters town. Josefine, as a knight of the grey rose, stubborn, aggressive when it come to these things takes her rusty dagger erm sword and attacks. Two seconds later she wakes up at the cross. Damn. I was so sure to win against him/ her /it.
The other possibilily would be to run away...wow...ever seen a knight run away? Great rp....erm...won't really fit.

4. Item and skill orientation.

5. My real life. Exams, school, friends, family....

Cannot say what is wrong with the crafting system because none of my chars is working. I stopped with it like last year because it is too monotonously (shift-click, shift-click, shift-click, shift-click, shift-click...).
