Re: Willpower vs Essence
Solution: Stop exploiting the character creation system. Illarion isn't (shouldn't be) the place for 'builds' and 'min-maxing'.

The teachers are definetely NOT to blame for such people. Of course the teachers are to blame. That's the nature of the system. It is not that difficult to tell which students are going to become valued mages and teachers, and which students are going to become your next [insert name of generic clo...

Re: Quote of the day is back
How he was born: Xarek, unlike most people, never had a mother. He is the son of Dorgon Bandargo, a rich albarian noble who had rather peacefull beliefs. Because Dorgon always wanted a son, but could not find a woman to fit his tastes, he decided to hire mages from Lor-Angur in exchange of an artif...

Did you even read the thread, Cascarrabias? Yeah, and they are all the same. No, they aren't. They all grip abut the same issue, why skills sux and how we can make them better by concepts of unimaginable proportions that sound great when dealing the a GM 5 to 10 players but in an MMO environment wh...

Re: So.. I guess I'm a medieval tyrant!
People have. Then they got arrested for treason. You may not be a tyrant, but you need to ease up ig. A lot of people have quit the game because of the high stress and lack of fun created by the recent Trolls Bane government. Sure no one has said anything, they all just up and left instead. What a ...

Seriously, if you're so eager about wanting to know what the VBU is going to be like, grab your nearest NPC maker and start churning them out. It goes both ways. If you want people to help out, then give them some evidence that they are not going to be just wasting their time contributing to a game...

Re: Skill limit
@Grokk; Because of the small sized community (->possibility to expand/adapt content) and therefor smaller 'gap' between staff and PO? For Runescape, sure. But it doesn't work for UO shards, which have small enough communities to allow strong communication between staff and players. Is the small gap...

Re: Skill limit
What Respen said, basically. Also, he is exactly the kind of player that this game attracts, and then soon drives away: intelligent, mature, and with a passion for roleplay. Listen to people like him, and they might actually stick around. Increasing the starting skills is a brilliant idea. That is t...

Re: Skill limit
I am quite curious what type of system would allow us to gain skill fast or make characters a closer match for each other while still allowing for crafters to be as important as fighters. That would only be a problem if you sped skill gain up to an unreasonable level, where it was possible to max o...

Re: Skill limit
Definitely agree with Korwin's post. That's exactly why I think reducing the ability gap between low and high skilled characters would be more effective than just speeding up skill gain. You'll still have variability between characters, with those people willing to put in training hours being more p...

Re: Skill limit
The easiest way to fix some/most of the current issues would be to simply make skilling faster. Probably the most sensible sentence in the entire thread. Closely followed by these two: For levelling and combat, there are plenty other games that do a far better job in that area. If you join Illarion...

Re: Skill limit
That's fair enough. What about making the skill-change less problematic? And the GMs observe the playerbase anyway, so it wouldn't be asking too much more from them. They wouldn't need to be monitoring everyone 24/7, just issuing a reward whenever they noticed someone consistently roleplaying well a...

Re: Skill limit
I agree with Ezor on the "high ranking" point. We have had some pretty poor roleplayers playing characters in important positions, and some of the great roleplayers have played characters who are nothing more than penniless commoners. There is little correlation between a character's role ...

The problem in this thread is that no one knows what the issue is that we are actually discussing. This sort of thing probably causes the confusion: Also bad for the game is having one or two players decide what sort of roleplay is permitted and letting them ban the characters that don't fit into th...

I guess I'm making the assumption that the jailor POs put characters in jail for RP. Am I mistaken? Yep. Or, at least, I don't think that is what you are assuming at all. You seem to be assuming that the jailer POs put characters in jail so that they can provide them with constant RP, that RP can o...
