Ich weiß nicht wie es dazu kommt, dass du die nicht mehr standardmäßig per Doppelklick starten kannst, aber mit Rechtsklick -> Öffnen mit.. sollte es möglich sein die mit Java (javaw.exe ist die richtige Anwendung soweit ich weiß) zu starten.

Pre VBU, even non fighting mages were pretty powerful if they had all the runes and at least mediocre skill. This was mainly due to the paralyze spell. Poisoning is still there, but can't be actually used or (as far as I know) raised at the moment. A new poison system is going to be developed soon(TM). Older chars got their dodge and tactics skills deleted and the total points/2 refunded to put into an armor skill of their choice, when armor skills...

1. and 2. seem to be reasonable. No idea how much work is involved. We had 3. before the VBU and people complained the 5 minute walk from Bane to somewhere else was way too long (and too dangerous, bacause sometimes you'd meet flies on the road). We've had skill loss before the VBU and it was dropped because it was too frustrating for many. With the way the current system works I'd say it would be a million times worse now than pre VBU.

For what reason(s)?That smiths need poison made from alchemists to create a poisoned weapon is very likely, though.

The insurance thing has been proposed years before the vbu and everyone seemed to like it back then. I guess PC drops on death coupled with this were not implemented for simplicity reasons? It would be an effective money sink and make people less careless about death anyway. I still like it.

I finally upgraded as well and had to use oracle's jre to get it to work on linux mint 13. For some reason I always got an error saying I need a higher version when trying to run the downloader.jar with openjdk 1.7.0_51.
