I like the idea of a baby object existing in game. It could be a two-handed item except for characters with high dexterity. You'd have to stuff the baby in your bag or depot in order to craft or fight.

Would it also be possible to disable the player fighting system in the area of the cross? It would limit a lot of unnecessary whining.

The trick is not to try to turn away. You have to intentionally walk a step in the same direction your character is already going before trying to turn. Then you should get unstuck. This has worked for me every time so far.
