Client development is written in java. You'll need knowledge of using Java (of course), knowledge of Parrelilisation and that sort of thing is very useful too.
The client uses OpenGL for the GUI - so that helps. Nitram will be able to give you a better answer of course.

I don't think this is necessary. With the VBU, a good number of monsters will be 'party' monsters. So fighting them alone is suicidal - therefore you need groups. That sounds like the half-rebuilt-but-then-abandoned Kallahorn which has a spawn nearby. The southern woods aint called the "Skeleton Woods" for nothing buddy.

I believe Ezor just hit the nail on the head, a begging miner, carpentor, smith and crafting or collecting profession is useful from the beginning. Fighters are NOT. Meh, as a simple solution how about this: Your first X actions of the day will net you 10 times the learning curve, then it goes back to the normal amount, which doesn't decrease. The amount should be pretty much what you'd get from 10 minutes of heavy-duty skilling. That way, if you're a casual use...
